Project Overview

Starting in January 2020, Metro Vancouver will begin construction of a new Biosolids Dewatering Facility within the existing Iona Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Richmond. The new facility will be used to dewater ongoing production of biosolids (organic material recovered from wastewater treatment).

This facility will include a dewatering building and a truck loading bay. It will be an enclosed building with an odour control system.

Construction will last for approximately one year. In the months leading up to construction, you may see Metro Vancouver crews conducting monitoring work near the Musqueam Cultural Education Resource Centre. In cooperation with the Musqueam Public Works Department, these crews are collecting environmental data to ensure the new facility performs as intended.

Design

DID YOU KNOWthat biosolids are a natural alternative to chemical fertilizer? Biosolids are blended with wood chips and sand to create a highly fertile landscaping soil. Soil containing biosolids has been used in landscaping projects around the region, including nearby at Iona Beach Regional Park and Vancouver International Airport.

What are biosolids?Biosolids are the treated solids recovered from wastewater treatment. The final product is an earth-like material that is rich in organic matter and essential nutrients that help plants thrive.
