LOCATION OF THE IONA ISLAND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

Metro Vancouver is upgrading the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant to continue to protect public health and the environment in a growing region.

Iona Beach Regional Park is home to a rare community of sand dune plants, and sits in the midst of the Pacific Flyway – making it a mecca for thousands of migrating birds.

Working with Our Partners and the Community

Metro Vancouver will work closely with stakeholders and First Nations to ensure the project considers their interests and fits with the community.

Metro Vancouver will:

• Meet with stakeholders and First Nations to listen to their interests and priorities

• Collaborate with interested stakeholders and First Nations on how the plant is integrated with Iona Beach Regional Park and the surrounding environment

• Collaborate with interested stakeholders and First Nations on resource recovery opportunities

• Provide information in a timely manner

• Take feedback to the project team and report back on how it has been addressed

• Establish a single point of contact the community can reach to discuss the project

The existing Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant was built in 1963 and has been expanded six times to accommodate population growth and treatments upgrades.

The 4km Iona Jetty is popular with people walking and cycling and offers views of the ocean, the nearby airport and migratory birds.
