THE SETTING: The University of Iowa women’s basketball team opens the 2014-15 season this weekend, hosting USC Upstate on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) and Robert Morris on Sunday at 2 p.m., on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Friday’s contest is part of a women’s/men’s doubleheader. Single-game women’s basketball tickets are $12 for adults. Youth -- high school-aged and younger --- are admitted free to all weekday games, including Friday night games. Youth tickets for weekend games cost $8. Youth -- five years old and younger -- are admitted free to all games. UI students are admitted free with student ID. Tickets are available by visiting the ticket office at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, calling 1-800-IA-HAWKS, or online at hawkeyesports.com.

SEASON TICKETS: Season tickets are on sale for the 2014-15 Iowa women’s basketball season. General public season tickets are $100. UI faculty/staff can purchase tickets for $80. Seniors (50 and older) are also $80, while youth season tickets (18 or younger) are $25. UI stu-dents are admitted free to women’s basketball games. HAWKEYES IN SEASON OPENERS: Iowa is a perfect 14-0 in season openers under head coach Lisa Bluder. Friday will mark the 12th time in Bluder’s 15 years that the Hawkeyes open the season at home.

IOWA ROLLS IN EHXIBITION: The Hawkeyes defeated St. Ambrose on Nov. 9 in an exhibition in their first appearance of the year, 119-57. Thirteen Iowa players saw action, and 12 scored. Bethany Doolittle (21 points), Me-lissa Dixon (19), Ally Disterhoft (18), and Chase Coley (11) scored in double figures. The Hawkeyes shot 53 percent from the field (41-of-78), 83 percent from the line (24-of-29), and made 13-of-26 3-pointers. Iowa registered 28 assists, while only surrendering nine turnovers.

SCOUTING USC UPSTATE:• USC Upstate has been picked to finish fourth in the A-Sun.• Junior center Brittany Starling has been selected to the preseason A-Sun All-Conference Team for the second-straight year.• The Spartans finished 17-15 a year ago and competed in the WBI Tournament.• Friday’s contest also marks the season-opener for USC Upstate. The Spartans will travel to Iowa State on Sunday. • USC Upstate is coached by Tammy George. George, the all-time leader in victories at USC Upstate, is beginning her 12th season overall as a head coach and 10th at the helm of the Spartan program.

SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS:• The Colonials went 21-12 in 2014 and won the Northeast Conference tournament and regu-lar season championship before falling to Notre Dame in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.• Robert Morris has been picked to win the NEC again this seasonn. • Sunday’s contest marks the season-opener for Robert Morris. The Colonials will travel to Il-linois on Tuesday. • Robert Morris is coached by Sal Buscaglia. Buscaglia, now in his 12th season, has led the Colonials to six national tournaments, three Northeast Conference championships and playoff berths in nine of his 11 seasons.

ALL-TIME SERIES / LAST MEETING:• Friday’s matchup marks the first meeting between Iowa and USC Upstate.• Iowa won its only meeting with Robert Morris, 58-44, on Nov. 20, 2012, in Iowa City.

HAWKEYES 19TH IN RANKINGS: Iowa is ranked No. 19 in the Preseason Associated Press Top-25 poll and the USA Today Pre-season Coaches poll. The Hawkeyes finished the 2013-14 season ranked 19th in the AP Top-25 poll, and 26th (receiving votes) in the USA Today Coaches poll. Iowa was ranked for eight weeks last season in the AP poll, and received votes in nine additional weeks. The Big Ten is tied with the ACC for the most ranked teams in the AP poll (five). Ten different Big Ten teams received votes in the Associated Press or USA Today Coaches’ preseason top 25 polls, led by Maryland at No. 10/8 (AP/USA Today). Michigan State is ranked No. 14/15 and is followed by No. 16/16 Nebraska, No. 19/19 Iowa and No. 24/- Rutgers. Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, Ohio State and Purdue also received votes in at least one poll.

TOUGH SCHEDULE: Iowa’s schedule this season features 29 regular season games (18 conference, 11 nonconfer-ence). Of those 29 contests, 20 will come against teams that played in a postseason tournament last season. Seventeen-of-24 teams the Hawkeyes play this season reached a postseason tourna-ment a year ago. During the 2014 postseason, Big Ten programs combined for 15 NCAA Tournament and WNIT victories, tied for the most postseason wins in conference history.

WATCH THE HAWKEYES: Twenty-five of Iowa’s 29 regular season contests can be seen on BTN, BTN Plus, ESPN2, ESPN3, or MC22 (Mediacom Connections). Seventeen games will appear on BTN or digitally on BTN Plus, and two additional regular season contests will be televised by ESPN2. All 18 of Iowa’s league games can be seen on one of the BTN or ESPN platforms, and the Hawkeyes’ home nonconference contest against Iowa State on Dec. 11 will be televised by BTN at 7 p.m. (CT).

NCAA STREAK BEST IN BIG TEN: Iowa is the only Big Ten team, and one of only 14 teams in the country, to appear in the last seven NCAA Tournaments. There are 343 Division I teams. Iowa is 1-of-21 teams to advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. The Hawkeyes, a No. 6 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, defeated 11th-seeded Marist in the First Round, 87-65, marking the fourth-largest margin of victory in an NCAA Tournament game in program history.

Iowa captains are seniors Melissa Dixon, Samantha Logic, and Kathryn Reynolds.Lisa Bluder (pronounced BLUE-dir), the all-time win-

ningest coach in program history, is in her 15th season as head coach at the University of Iowa and her 31st season as a college head coach.

Under her direction, the Hawkeyes have advanced to 13 postseason appearances (11 NCAA and two WNIT) in 14 seasons, including NCAA Tournament berths in each of the last seven seasons. Iowa is the only team in the Big Ten, and one of 14 in NCAA Division I women’s basketball, to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last seven years. There are 343 Division I teams.

The longest-tenured Big Ten coach, Bluder has posted a 278-166 (.626) record at Iowa and her 30-year record stands at 634-308 (.673). Bluder surpassed Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer (269 wins) as the all-time winningest coach in program history on Feb. 10, 2014, as the Hawkeyes defeated Northwestern, 90-84.

Bluder, 1-of-9 active major college coaches with 600 or more wins, is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2001, 2008 and 2010) and two-time WBCA Regional Coach of the Year (2001 and 2008). She has guided Iowa to a winning record in 13 of her 14 years at Iowa, including 10 upper-division finishes in the challenging Big Ten Conference. Bluder, who ranks fourth among Big Ten coaches all-time in league victories (138), has led Iowa to eight 20-win seasons in her 14 years, including six of the last seven years.

Bluder has coached numerous players to different awards in her 14 years in Iowa City. She has mentored 19 players to 40 All-Big Ten honors, including 11 first team picks, 11 second, 11 third and seven honorable mention selections. She has also had two Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winners, two Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year recipients, six members of the Big Ten All-Freshman team and three players named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team, with Kachine Alexander earning the honor twice.

Five players during Bluder’s tenure have earned a total of six Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) all-region team accolades and six players have earned a total of 11 honorable mention All-America honors.

With Bluder on the Iowa sidelines, student-athletes have been named Academic All-Big Ten 67 times, including a program-best eight honorees in 2011 and 2012. The 67 honorees equal the third-highest total in the Big Ten during the last 14 years.

In her 10 years at Drake, Bluder brought great success and tradition to the Bulldog program and established herself as one of the top coaches in the country. She led Drake to five 20-plus win seasons in her last six years, including five post-season appearances. She guided the Bulldogs to eight Missouri Valley Conference Tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals six times and winning the tournament four times. Bluder was also named the Conference Coach of the Year three times at Drake.

Bluder began her coaching career at St. Ambrose, where she coached six successful seasons, building the Bees into a NAIA powerhouse. During her tenure at St. Ambrose, Bluder guided the Bees to four straight national tournaments, including two consecutive Final Four appearances. IOWA PICKED 3RD; LOGIC NAMED ALL-BIG TEN: Iowa has been picked to finish third behind Maryland and Michigan State in the 2014-15 Coaches Big Ten preseason rankings, while senior Samantha Logic has been named preseason All-Big Ten by league media and coaches. Logic earned honorable mention All-America honors from the Associated Press and the WBCA as a junior last year. The Racine, Wisconsin, native was a unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches, and a first team selection by the media to become the 18th Iowa player to garner first team All-Big Ten honors -- the most of any Big Ten program.

LOGIC NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN: Samantha Logic, a 2014 honorable mention All-American, has been named to ESPN’s Preseason All-America Second Team. Logic was joined on the second team by Rachel Banham of Minnesota, Moriah Jefferson of UConn, Isabelle Harrison of Tennessee and Aleighsa Welch of South Carolina. The first team included Jewell Loyd of Notre Dame, Tiffany Mitchell of South Carolina, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of UConn, Nina Davis of Baylor and Breanna Stewart of UConn.

RETURNING SCORING POWER: Last season, Iowa set the school record for scoring offense (78.2), leading the league in scoring while notching the second-most points in a season in Big Ten history (2,814). Iowa returns 84 percent of its scoring from last season, including 10 letterwinners and four starters that averaged double-figures: All-Big Ten honoree Bethany Doolittle (14.2 points per game), All-American Samantha Logic (13.3), All-Big Ten honoree Ally Disterhoft (13.2), and Melissa Dixon (13.1).

ROSTER CHANGES FOR 2014-15: Theairra Taylor averaged 12.4 points per game last season as a senior. Iowa returns all other 10 letterwinners from a year ago, and adds a promising freshmen class that includes 6-foot forward Christina Buttenham (Canadian Junior Women’s National Team member), 6-foot-3 forward Chase Coley (Gatorade Minnesota Girls Basketball Player of the Year), 5-foot-5 guard Whitney Jennings (Indiana Miss Basketball), and 6-foot-1 forward Carly Mohns (first-team all-state).

SEASON IN REVIEW: The University of Iowa women’s basketball team finished the 2013-14 campaign with a 27-9 overall record, including an 11-5 mark in Big Ten play. Iowa finished tied for fourth in the league with Purdue. The Hawkeyes were an at-large selection for the NCAA Tournament, earning a No. 6 seed and hosting the First and Second rounds. Iowa defeated No. 11 seed Marist, 87-65, in the First Round, marking the fourth-largest margin of victory in an NCAA Tourna-ment game in program history. The Hawkeyes fell to No. 3 seed and fourth-ranked Louisville, 83-53, in the Second Round.

MOST WINS SINCE 1995-96: Iowa’s 27 wins last year marked the highest total under UI head coach Lisa Bluder, and the highest since Iowa finished 27-4 in 1995-96. Seven of Iowa’s nine losses came against ranked opponents. The Hawkeyes’ 27 victories equal the second-highest total in program history. Iowa also won 27 games in 1995-96 (27-4), 1992-93 (27-4), and 1988-89 (27-5). The program record for single-season victories is 29, as the Hawkeyes went 29-2 during the 1987-88 season. Iowa defeated Illinois inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 13 (69-55), earning its 20th win of the season and becoming the first Big Ten team to reach the mark. The Hawkeyes have won 20 games or more in a season eight times under Lisa Bluder, including six of the last seven seasons (Iowa finished 19-12 in 2011-12). Dating back to the 1984-85 season, Iowa has reached the 20-win mark 18 times. Iowa won its 20th game last season in its 26th contest, marking the fastest year to 20 wins under Bluder, and fastest since the 1995-96 season. That year, the Hawkeyes won their 20th in their 21st game under head coach Angie Lee. Iowa started 20-1 and finished 27-4 while advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

OTHER 2014 HIGHLIGHTS:• Lisa Bluder surpassed C. Vivian Stringer as Iowa’s all-time winningest coach on Feb. 10 as the Hawkeyes defeated Northwestern, 90-84.• Three Hawkeyes – Samantha Logic, Kali Peschel, Kathryn Reynolds – named Academic All-Big Ten (Iowa has earned 67 Academic All-Big Ten honors under head coach Lisa Bluder, tying for the third-most in the conference during that time span.)• Logic was named an honorable mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). • Logic surpassed Cara Consuegra (1997-2001) as Iowa’s all-time assists leader and became the 31st 1,000-point scorer in program history. She was named Big Ten Player of the Week three times.• Iowa won at No. 9 Penn State on Feb. 6, 73-70, marking the Hawkeyes’ first win over a top-10 team away from Iowa City since defeating No. 7 Purdue, 75-70, in the 2001 Big Ten Tournament title game (March 4, 2001), and Iowa’s first in a true road game since winning at No. 9 Southern California, 50-49, on Dec. 30, 1993. • Samantha Logic (assists), Melissa Dixon (3-pointers), and Bethany Doolittle (blocks) all set new single-season program records. • Dixon finished with seven 3-point field goals in wins over Syracuse and UNC-Wilmington, ty-ing a personal and school record; the feat has been accomplished five times in program history (twice by Dixon).• Iowa defeated Idaho State on Dec. 7, 95-47, converting a school record 17 made 3-point field goals. MOVING UP CAREER CHARTS:• Samantha Logic (622 career assists) surpassed Cara Consuegra (1997-2001; 576) as Iowa’s

all-time assists leader during Iowa’s win at Illinois on March 2 in the regular season finale. She ranks ninth in Big Ten history.

• Melissa Dixon is fifth in 3-pointers on Iowa’s all-time list (210). She surpassed Kristi Smith during Iowa’s game at Purdue on Feb. 16. Wendy Ausdemore is fourth all-time with 221.

• Bethany Doolittle is third all-time with 184 career blocks. She surpassed Megan Skouby who is now fourth with 150, during Iowa’s game against Nebraska on Feb. 1. Tangela Smith is second with 235.

HAWKEYES AT CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA: Iowa went 14-4 at home last season, and is 89-23 in its last 112 games inside Carver-Hawk-eye Arena. The Hawkeyes are 349-101 (.776) all-time inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and 11-6 in NCAA Tournament games. Iowa’s 14 home wins a year ago equaled the second-highest single-season total in program history. The 14 wins were the most in Iowa City since the Hawkeyes finished 14-0 in the 1995-96 season. Iowa also won 14 home games in 1988-89 (14-0), 1987-88 (14-0), 1986-87 (14-1), 1985-86 (14-1). The program record for home wins is 15, as the Hawkeyes finished 15-0 in 1992-93. Iowa advanced to the NCAA Final Four that season. ANOTHER TOP ATTENDANCE YEAR: Iowa ranked 22nd in the country in attendance last season, averaging 4,395 fans per contest. Last year marks the fourth-straight season that Iowa has ranked inside the top 25 in attendance. The Hawkeyes were 19th in attendance in each of the previous two years, and were 13th in 2010.

MOST B1G VICTORIES: Head coach Lisa Bluder has 138 career Big Ten victories (138-92), surpassing former Ohio State head coach Jim Foster (136) for the fourth-most in league history. Rene Portland of Penn State has the most in conference history (176). Former Hawkeye head coach C. Vivian Stringer is second with 169 wins, and Karen Langeland of Michigan State has the third most (156).

IOWA HISTORY: Iowa has played 1,168 games since beginning basketball in 1974. Iowa’s overall record is 719-449 (.613). That includes a 359-183 (.660) mark in regular season Big Ten contests and a 349-101 (.776) mark in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Tania Davis (Grand Blanc, Michigan), Megan Gustafson (Port Wing, Wisconsin), Tagyn Larson (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and Hannah Stewart (Minot, North Dakota) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Iowa next fall. Iowa’s class is ranked 18th nationally by ESPN HoopGurlz.

Davis, a 5-foot-4 guard from Goodrich High School in Grand Blanc, Michigan, is an ESPN HoopGurlz Top 100 recruit, ranking as the 37th-best prospect nationally and the 12th-best point guard. She is ranked as the top prospect in the 2015 class in the state of Michigan by Lady Baller Insider.

The two-time team captain has led Goodrich to three-straight conference titles, a district champion-ship, and two state titles. Davis earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a freshman, leading Goodrich to a 28-0 record and a state title, playing in 28 contests while making six starts. She averaged 8.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.7 steals. As a sophomore, Davis started all 28 games while averaging 17.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.2 steals, leading Goodrich to a 25-3 record and a second-consecutive state title. She earned first team all-conference, Basketball Coaches Association Class B All-State, Associated Press Class B Special Mention All-State, Detroit Free Press First Team All-State Class B, and Detroit News First Team All-State Class B honors.

Last year as a junior, Davis led Goodrich to a district title and a 22-3 record, averaging 19.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 3.2 steals, while starting all 25 games. She earned MLive (Flint) Player of the Year, Associated Press Class B Player of the Year, Basketball Coaches Association Best of the Best (top 11 players in state), Detroit Free Press First Team All-State Class B, Detroit News First Team All-State, and first team all-conference honors. Davis notched five 25-point games, including a 41-point performance. A National Honor Society member, she has been a member of the honor roll every semester since her freshman year.

Gustafson, a 6-foot-3 forward from South Shore High School in Port Wing, Wisconsin, is an ESPN HoopGurlz Top 100 recruit (No. 92). The two-time team captain is a three-time first team all-conference honoree and a two-time first team all-state selection. As a freshman, she averaged 19.9 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 5.3 blocks. Gustafson led South Shore to a conference, regional, and sectional champion-ship as a sophomore, averaging 30.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 5.6 blocks in 28 starts as team finished 27-1. Last year as a junior, she started all 27 games, leading team to a 26-1 record and conference and regional titles. Gustafson averaged 29.8 points, 18.9 rebounds, and 5.9 blocks.

Gustafson is also a four-time all-conference selection in volleyball, and competes in the shot put, discus, triple jump, 300-meter hurdles, and 100-meter hurdles in track. She finished seventh in the shot put and 11th in the discus in last year’s state track meet. Gustafson, a National Honor Society member, has been an honor roll student throughout high school. She has served as class president all four years of high school, and served as a student council member as a junior.

Larson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a three-time all-state and all-city honoree. She is a two-time all-tournament and all-conference selection, and has been named to the Argus Leader First Five. Larson averaged 12 points and eight rebounds and registered 90 blocks as a sophomore, leading Roosevelt to a conference title. As a junior she averaged 16 points and eight rebounds, tallying 69 blocks. She shot 51 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line. Larson holds the school record for career blocks and blocks in a game, and needs 71 rebounds to become the school’s career leader.

Larson is a standout outside hitter for the Roosevelt volleyball team, earning all-state, all-conference, and all-city honors. Named a Hometown Hero for her high school, she is also involved in Spanish Club, Cancer Awareness Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Stewart, a 6-foot-2 forward from Bishop Ryan High School in Minot, North Dakota, is an ESPN Hoop-Gurlz Top 100 recruit (No. 95). She has played varsity basketball since she was in eighth grade, when she averaged 7.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.7 blocks, as team finished third in Region 6. As a freshman, Stewart averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 3.6 steals, and 2.2 blocks, leading team to a 26-2 record, a conference title, and a fifth-place finish at the state tournament. She was named all-state, all-region, all-district, and to the state all-tournament team.

Stewart has led Bishop Ryan to a state record 57-game winning streak entering her senior year, winning conference and state championships in each of the last two years. As a sophomore, she averaged 21.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 4.7 steals, and 3.2 blocks, while posting 23.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 4.3 steaks, and 2.9 blocks per contest as a junior. A two-time team captain, she has garnered all-state, all-region, all-district, state all-tournament team, and state tournament MVP honors in each of the last two years. Stewart was a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee in 2014, an all-area athlete in 2013 and 2014, and athlete of the year for the state of North Dakota in 2014. She holds school records for career points (1,955), rebounds (1,047), blocks (274), and steals (397), and rebounds in a single game (16).

Stewart is also a standout volleyball player, earning all-district and all-region honors. She plays pitcher and shortstop in softball, and owns the school records for home runs, career hits, and pitching wins. Stewart tossed a no-hitter in the 2013 state tournament. She has guided Bishop Ryan to three-straight conference titles and three-consecutive state runner-up finishes, while being named all-state and state all-tournament four times and a nominee for the Gatorade Player of the Year twice.

A 4.0 student, Stewart serves as National Honor Society president, and is a member of the speech team, Rotary Club, and S.A.D.D. She is also a Special Olympics volunteer and plays violin in the orchestra.
