Iowa law requires that an OWI offender complete a drinking driver program. Providers of the education program are required to be approved by the Iowa Department of Education to offer the program. Providers in Iowa utilize the 12 hour Prime for Life curriculum for the state-mandated drinking driver course. OWI offenders must also complete a substance abuse evaluation, and treatment if recommended by the evaluator. Agencies that provide substance abuse evaluations/treatment must be certified by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The agencies listed below have been approved by the Iowa Department of Education to offer the drinking driver course and the Iowa Department of Public Health to offer substance abuse evaluation/treatment as noted in the services provided.

A 1st offense OWI in Iowa requires a 48 hour jail stay. The 1st offense jail diversion program is offered at a facility where the offender is under house arrest for the 48 hour requirement. This program incorporates the 12 hour program and satisfies the jail requirement for the 1st offense OWI.

A 2nd offense OWI in Iowa requires a 168 hour jail stay. The 2nd offense jail diversion program is offered at a facility where the offender is under house arrest for 96 hours. Typically this program is broken up into 2 weekends. This program incorporates the 12 hour drinking driver education program and satisfies 96 of the required 168 hours of jail time.
