Little-known, But Interesting, Railroad Information

The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman army war chariot. Specs and bureaucracies live forever. So, the next time you are handed a specification and wonder what horse's back end came up with it, you may be exactly right - because the Imperial Roman chariots were made to be just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses.

Iowa Winnie Hawks Show & TellLichtsinn Motors partnered with Iowa Winnie Hawks and WIT by allowing us space to promote the club to attendees at the RV Camping show in Des Moines. Membership information was available for all Chapters. Special thanks to all WWTG’s who helped staff at the show.

This was Iowa's Original RV Camping Show. Featuring the latest in motorhomes, 5th wheelers, travel trailers, toy haulers, and more. Seven of the largest dealers in Central Iowa exhibited.

Sunny Travelers snowbirds gathered at Pier de' Orleans Restaurant in Mesa on Feb. 26, 2013.

The owners of the restaurant are from Louisiana so those that had attended the South East Rally in that state enjoyed the Cajun food offered.

So nice to see those friends we have made over the years as SunnyTravelers. This year we had some of our Winnebago cousins attend, the Baileys and Walderbachs from Iowa. From New York ventured David & Ella Guthrie. Illinois had a lot of attendees too - the Sharps, Dennys, Gilberts and Morgans. Minnesota had two couples join us - Mel & Louis Larson and Dave & Ardy Blakeman. The Michigan flock came in force - Ferraras, Byrnes, Wesierski, Huffs, Amells, Smiths, Burleys, and Treeces. It was a good year for all of us from the midwest and NY to migrate out here.

Five members won door prizes, four one year memberships kindly donated by RCMI and a Dust Devil upright vacuum courtesy of Camping World.Janet Treece, Sunny Travelers Newsletter

What is required for our Assignmentsat IWH functions?

Beverages: All supplies should be in the trailer except the juice and ice. You are responsible for purchasing the juice and ice. If supplies are needed anytime during the event, purchase them with discretion and turn the receipt(s) into the Club Treasurer (or contact the Club Treasurer with a list of items needed).

Wash out the coffee pots and thermos jugs at the end of each day and before returning them in the trailer.Starting Thursday afternoon, for early arrivals and IF the building is available, have I pot of regular coffee brewed and one thermos jug of ice water ready.

Regular and decaffeinated coffee should be made and ready by 7:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday. It takes about one hour for the coffee to brew. When you plug in the three pots (regular, decaffeinated, and hot water), do NOT use the same outlet or you can easily trip circuit breakers. Have coffee available throughout the day.

Use the small coffee pot for hot water to make tea and hot chocolate. Ice water should be available at all times.

Keep the weather and temperature in mind as well as attendance and plan accordingly.

When the event is over please put all the supplies back in the trailer in their designated places. NOTE: Keep the cooler lids loose on top of each other or the insides will develop mold. If problems or questions arise, contact the Club Vice President.

Popcorn: All supplies are in the popcorn box in thetrailer labeled accordingly along with instructions for operating the popper.

Popcorn should be available during the scheduled game period(s). Popcorn should be available on Friday and Saturday evening after the evening meals. Distribute the popcorn to anyone wanting some.

Clean the equipment when you’ve finished serving on Saturday evening (or early Sunday morning). Return the clean popcorn equipment to the proper box and return it and the cleaned popcorn popper to the trailer. If problems or questions arise, contact the Vice President.

Games: The game equipment is found in Game Box 1 and Game Box 2 and located in the trailer.

The games will be played at the times found in the printed program or schedule. They are generally played on Saturday.

Decide what games to play. Think of some that may go along with the theme of the meeting.

After you have decided what games to play, place sign-up sheets at the registration table by Friday morning with the times of the games posted.

When it is time to play the games, it will be your decisionas to what, how, and where they will be done. You are responsible for overseeing the games and insuring everyone is having fun.

It is your responsibility to have inexpensive prizes (e.g., candy, toys, etc.) available for each of the winners. Check with the Club Vice President and see if there are any small donation items that could be used for prizes. If not, purchase the prizes and turn in your receipt(s) to the Club Treasurer for reimbursement.

When the games are completed, tally all the scores and pass the winners’ names (individual and team) to the President. The winners will be presented with prizes at the Saturday evening social hour.

When finished with the equipment, put them back in the appropriate box and return them to the trailer. If problems or questions arise, contact the Club Vice President.

Meals: Other than breakfast, you will not be expected to cook an entire meal but you may need to help serve a catered meal and to clean up afterwards.

Most of the time “meals” means breakfast consisting of pancakes and sausages. However, sometimes it may be other things but nothing difficult to prepare.

You are responsible for purchasing the sausages (patties or links) and butter (margarine). Check the other supplies the day before the event and buy what you need with discretion. Turn the receipt/invoice for these items into the Club Treasurer for reimbursement (or contact the Club Treasurer with a list of needed supplies for the Club Treasurer to purchase).

Cook the sausage prior to the meal and keep them warm in the roaster until serving time. Mix the pancake batter in the bucket with a drill (not supplied) and the mixing paddle. Either use the pancake maker or use the pitchers to pour the batter on the grill.

Coat the grill with cooking spray before beginning to cook. Place both syrup and butter on each table.

Serve each person with two to three pancakes and two sausages (depending on size). There are usually leftovers for those wanting second helpings.

Start serving at the designated time on the program or schedule and no earlier. People can enjoy coffee and juice while they wait for the serving line to open.

When finished with breakfast, clean up everything and put things back into the trailer in the proper places.

If problems or questions arise, contact the Club President.

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.”- Ernest Hemingway
