Summary

CUSTOMER intends to deploy a comprehensivesecurity system including CCTV surveillance, AccessControl and Intrusion Detection etc.

Purpose of this document is to discuss benefits ofproposed IP based security solutions and to shortlydescribe how these solutions shall be integratedthrough a fiber-optic network and how the integrationof said solutions will improve overall security.



Unfortunately, the costs associated with installing,maintaining, and repairing conventional security systemshave often been prohibitive. To date, security systems reliedupon proprietary hardware, software and solutions, whichrequired investment in expensive, dedicated equipment andcustom software programming.

This situation is changing. For the first time, largely due tothe ubiquity of the Internet and IP-based applications,security systems are significantly more affordable and muchmore effective for organization of all sizes.



IP is the Future

Over the past few years, organizations of all types and sizes havemigrated their proprietary networks onto Internet-based networks(based on Internet Protocol, or IP). IP has rapidly become the singlemost popular network protocol in the world, and a majority ofbuildings and facilities now have an Internet or Intranet connection.

These organizations have discovered that IP networks can distributereal-time voice, audio, video, and data to disparate locations.Whether within a single building, to remote sites, or across the worldthe networks are much more efficient and cost-effective than non-standard, proprietary approaches, because IP enables a multitude ofdiverse applications to utilize standard network technology.



The primary benefit of this IP-based strategy is the costsavings and flexibility associated with using oneconverged network, rather than installing severalsmaller, proprietary systems. each dedicated to aspecific application and each requiring customhardware, cabling and maintenance. Unlike withproprietary solutions, users with IP solutions haveaccess and control of virtually any audio, video,lighting, data, heating and air conditioning, and securityapplication from the desktop.



The use of conventional wiring and otherproprietary communications methods will becomelargely obsolete in the security industry in the nearfuture. IP-based networks are already thecommunications standard for numerous devices,and IP has proven to be the easiest, most flexible,and cost-effective standard for integrating andconnecting different security products and systems.



The IP network allows the most flexible and cost-effective integration of access control, securitysystems, and video camera technology. Becauseend-users tap into existing network connections,no additional wiring is necessary. Even if new wiresare needed, the use of standard networks providesnumerous benefits from the usability of theconnections for multiple applications to easiermaintenance due to standard tools, know-how, andIT resources readily available.



Incorporating security systems into the IP networkallows end-users to fully integrate multiple systemsand share information in real-time via the Ethernetnetwork. IP communications is the best way fordifferent security systems, software, and platformsto share information, as end-users can access allsystems and components through a standardEthernet network.

No other cable-based data transmission medium offers the bandwidth that fiber does



Resistance to electromagnetic interference

Fiber has a very low rate of bit error (10 EXP-13), as a result of fiber being so resistant to electromagnetic interference.

Fiber-optic transmission are virtually noise free.



Early detection of cable damage and secure transmissions

Fiber provides an extremely secure transmission medium, as there is no way to detect the data being transmitted by

“listening in” to the electromagnetic energy “leaking” through the cable, as is possible with traditional, electron-based

transmissions. By constantly monitoring an optical network and by carefully measuring the time it takes light to reflect down the fiber, splices in the cable can be easily detected.



IP-base security systems are designed to be modular, intuitive andrelatively simple to configure. Users familiar with standard networkprotocols can easily connect these devices to an existing router,assign an IP address and immediately access the device over thenetwork. Since these components take advantage of existingCAT5/CAT6 infrastructure, the need for bulky, expensive coaxialcable runs can be altogether eliminated when installing networkvideo cameras.

Innovative IP based access control and other systems offer similarcost savings since multiple sites can be linked together over anetwork allowing remote programming, diagnostics andmaintenance.

As mentioned earlier, IP enabled security equipment will be used, means it can communicatethrough an IP network. But the hardware cannot communicate directly with fiber opticinfrastructure because it uses CAT5/CAT6 interface, which is global standard for networking.Therefore, standard CAT5/CAT6 is required as communication medium between securityequipment and fiber optic infrastructure.

Network switch with both Copper and Fiber Optic ports will be required at all points whereCopper and Fiber Optic mediums are combined.
