WebelieveaniPadprogramisakeytoolthatwillhelpusachievethisgoalinourschool.Inthekeyareasofexplicitnumeracyandliteracyteaching,ourstudentswillhave1:1accesstothecurriculumourteachersdeliver.

Learningcannowbeaccessedbystudentsatany#meinanyplace.It’snolongeracaseof‘ifyoudidn’tunderstandtheteacherwhentheyexplaineditthenyoumayhavemissedtheboat’.Inaddi#ontothis,apersonaliPadmeansthatallmajorresourcesareonhandforourstudentsattheirpointofneed,fromavirtualcalculator,tointerac#vetablesac#vi#es,tospellingandgrammarresources–therearesomanypossiblelearningavenuesthatapersonaldevicemakesaccessible,witheverydifferentlearningstylenowbeingfarmoreeasilycateredfor.

Ourchildrenaregrowingupinavastlymorecomplexworldthanwedid.Thereisnowsomuchinforma#onthatisfreelyavailableonanytopicatany#me.Communica#oncanhappeninaninstantwithpeopleinanypartoftheworld.Becauseofthis,the‘basics’ofeduca#onhavechanged.Yes,literacyandnumeracyares#llthecoreofourschool’sfocus.However,schoolisnolongeronlyaboutlearningcontentasmuchasitisaboutlearningtheskillsandhabitsofmindthatwillallowastudenttobeasuccessfullife-longlearner.Skillslikeinforma#onliteracy,collabora#on,crea#vityandinnova#on,cri#calthinking,problemsolving,andofcourseICTliteracy,all

nowformpartofwhatshouldbe‘thebasics’ofachild’seduca#on.

Asaresult,whathappensinourclassroomshaschangedquitedrama#callyfromevenafewyearsago.Studentsarenowinvolvedinrealworldchallengesthatrequirethemtosolveproblemsasapartofateam.Theirsolu#onsaredesignedfromtheirowninves#ga#onswhichinvolveresearchingawidevarietyofresourcesandcommunica#onwithexpertsandrelevantmembersofourcommunityandthewiderworld.Theyarenotonlylearningaboutthetopicathand,butaboutthepowertheycanhavetoaffectchangeinourworld,andwhatitmeanstobeaglobalci#zeninanincreasingly

interconnectedworld.

Inthisenvironment,ICTtoolsareessen#al.Itisnolongergoodenoughtohaveascheduled‘computer#me’onshareddevices.Ontheotherextreme,itisalsonotappropriatetohavestudents‘staringatascreen’allday.Thetoolsourstudentsuseaspartoftheirinves#ga#onsneedtobethere,inthebackground,availablewhentheyneedthemasasmallpartofabiggertask.Theymayneedtocheckafact,lookupwhereatownisonamap,andjotdownakeybitofinforma#on.Havingatoolonhandprogressestheirlearningimmediately.

Italsoallowsthemtodocumenttheirlearninginawaytheynevercouldbefore.Beingabletotakeaphotoorvideoofanexperiment;recordingavideodiaryoftheirlearningsateachstageofaprocess;collabora#ngwiththeirpeersonasharedproject;sharingadocumentwiththeirteacherandgainingreal#mefeedback.Thesethings,whichwereallfantas#cfuturis#cvisionsonlyafewyearsago,arenowarealityforMontpellierstudents.

Research & Process Theproposalfora1:1programforourschoolwasfirstraisedatSchoolCouncilatthebeginningofTerm2,2016.Oversubsequentmee#ngs,awidevarietyofissueswerediscussedinrela#ontowhethertheschoolshouldimplementsuchaprogram.

TheSchoolCouncilrequestedthatweinformthewiderschoolcommunityabouttheproposalandthensurveywhattheparentsofourstudentswouldliketohavehappeninregardstoa1:1iPadProgrambeingimplemented.

In2017,theschoolalsosurveyedourstudentsandparentsofYear4&5students.Thisleferaskedthemaboutwhatsortofdevicestheyalreadyownedathome(includinghowmanyofourfamiliesownedaniPad),iftheyhadWi-Fiaccessathome.

Followingthis,anothersurveywillbemadeavailabletoparentsofYear2&3(grade3&4in2018)studentsreques#ngthemtostatewhethertheywouldintendtopar#cipateina1:1iPadProgramin2018ornot.Basedonthesesurveyresult,theSchoolCouncil,actedonbehalfofthestateddesiresofourparents.

Atthebeginningof2018,theschoolemployedtheservicesofaniPadLearningSpecialisttoassisttheteachersleadingtheprogramaroundeffec#vecurriculumdesignofusingiPadstotransformlearning.ThroughoutTerm1of2018weeklyiPadProfessionalDevelopmentsessionswereheldtoupskilltheteachersinvolvedintheprogram.

InTerm2,2018theiPadprogramwaslaunchedinallGrade3and4classes.AttheendofTerm2allstudents,parentsandstaffweresurveyedtodeterminetheini#aleffec#venessoftheprogramaswellasrefiningandimprovinghowtheprogramswasbeendelivered.

Why was the iPad the device of choice? Fromextensiveresearch,schoolvisitsandnowayearofhavingaprograminplacehearatMontpellier,the1:1BYODteamcametotheconclusionthattheiPadiswellsuitedtoourlearningenvironment.Itwaschosenforthefollowingbenefits:
