Info about the Camp (aims, tasks and activities – work, leisure and visits)

The camp will take place in the village of Teixeira/Atenor which lies in adjoining area the International Douro Natural Park (IDNP), about 5 Km from Sendim village (Miranda do Douro). Summer is often dry and characterised by notorious temperature swings – very high during the day (35ºC) and relatively low in the evening (10º-15ºC). The main goals of this workcamp are enhance the biodiversity of our Center, and improve the landscape for generations of donkeys and visitors to come; to enable the discovery of the Miranda Plateau, a unique rural region, rich in natural beauty, biodiversity, culture and traditions; and bringing together the young participants and the local community, therefore promoting intercultural (urban/rural, international/national) and intergenerational (youngsters/the elderly) encounters and exchanges. The tasks planned for the enhance the biodiversity of our Center will be attract birds - for birds to visit or live in our Center they need food and shelter, so we will preserve trees and plant shrubs that provide these, add a butterfly and a pollinator garden – we will increase the plants that attract and support them, add water to our Center – such a birdbath or a pond or stream makes it very attractive to birds and other wildlife, add a log, build a rock pile or preserve a snag - a pile of logs or rocks can provide a home for

wildlife, add birdhouses, bat houses or native pollinator houses – providing them good homes - welcoming to beneficial birds and

insects that keep pest insects under control and so we reduced the use of pesticides and avoid preventative spraying in the Center becoming organic farmers, preparing the meals (rotating task). Info about the Camp (aims, tasks and activities – work, leisure and visits)

The aim of this workcamp is to improve the knowledge and the conditions of part of 2 “caminhos” (pilgrims way) by cleaning the way, rebuilding some signals, planting trees and preparing exhibitions photography, tales and serigraphy that focus on Santiago and the pilgrims that could express to the local community this value of this heritage and why it is important to protect it. The Paths of Santiago, as Cultural and Spiritual Heritage are recognized as a tremendous human, cultural, tourist and economic surplus value. In addition to the economic impact, the social impact must be valued, as pilgrims from all over the world converge on a pilgrimage route, where sharing and coexistence give the motto for interculturality, contributing to enrichment in cultural and personal development terms. With the implementation of the "Walking the walk - Portuguese paths of Santiago" it is intended to develop a unique cultural opportunity, which aims to protect and preserve the Portuguese Cultural Patrimony, namely the routes that pass through Famalicão and Viana do Castelo (Via romana Way and Way of the Coast, respectively). The main objectives of this project are: to develop healthy habits and lifestyles in the participants; promote self-development, self-esteem, responsibility and autonomy, contributing to the acquisition of personal, social and professional skills; to sensitize youth to the importance of their participation in community development and preservation and enhancement of heritage; acquire and / or reinforce the language skills of the participants; European citizenship and sustainable growth. Through an artistic technique, silkscreen, young people can show their talent by educating and sensitizing the community to the roots of the Way of Saint James; With the support of the team of monitors will carry out the cleaning and support for the reforestation of the Santiago Way (in the way of the Roman road and way of the coast) in order to sensitize the Compostela routes as ecosystems to be maintained and preserved (in partnership with the program municipality of Famalicão to plant 25,000 trees by 2025); The young people will have to respond to a challenge of photography with the possibility of using the photomontage, in order that the participants report their contact with the Portuguese heritage, as well as their prism of vision of the same; It is intended that they construct two core exhibitions (Vila Nova de Famalicão and Viana do Castelo, respectively), in order to give the participants basic notions of curation of the art, physical sample of the results of the work field, valorization of the work of the participants and enrichment of the community-stage of the field of work; Creation of a geographical map of the field of work in order to integrate in the final exhibition dedicated to the faces of the apostle James, where the participants can express, through a record only his / her, how they conceive the figure of James (on the Way). The workcamp will be hosted in 2 different cities of Portugal: Vila Nova de Famalicão for the first 5 days of the camp and then, after a walk that connects both “caminhos), participants will be hosted in Viana do Castelo, closer to the “caminho da costa”. The participants will have the opportunity to join free time activities like swimming pool, cinema, and beach. They will take part in workshops of several activities and participatory photography and they will have chance to visit and get to know Vila nova de Famalicão, Viana do Castelo and Oporto.

The FORMOSA Project it’s a Workcamp that aims to clean part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park (Ludo) and the sandbars islands (Praia de Faro) of garbage and invasive floral species and raise awareness in the population. The last days of the camp we are going to improve the impact of the workcamp by spreading the word on cleaning activities. During this 10 days, we’ll also have much time for leisure and activities:

The Chapel of Santo Andre a building that dates back to the 12th century. This building brings history, culture and mysticism and was used as a place of prayer and overnight when the monks of the Order of Cister moved from the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas to the Monastery of Recião, however, since the religious orders began to fall into decay, the Chapel of Saint Andrew became inactive of any religious activity. This building is located in the Douro region and the Varosa Valley, which the INOVTERRA Association has designated as a building to be part of the Douro-Varosa Route, a bold and ambitious project that intends to mark a road connecting the Régua to São João of Tarouca, bringing more hikers, tourism and tourist alternatives to the region. The recovery in the interior of the Chapel of Santo André has been carried out by volunteers throughout this year, with the main objective of safeguarding, promoting and disseminating the historical heritage with its inclusion and use in the Douro-Varosa Trail, however this intervention is not enough. Besides the building we will work around the Chapel to make a new Monastic Garden Junior, and in the Monastic Garden in the Monastery of São João de Tarouca, planting and cutting aromatic and organic herbs. In partnership with INOVTERRA, AJUDE wants its CTI to intervene in preserving the memories and traditions that will exist around the Chapel, as well as creating a space open to cultural events, training, youth meetings, among others. In this CTI volunteers will carry out interior paving work, sanitary installation, painting of the walls and ceiling of the Chapel, collection of memories / traditions of the region / Chapel, cleaning and maintenance of the forest. In this way, in addition to valuing the heritage, by putting the Chapel of Santo André in the cultural and religious map, the space can once again be open to the community, to cultural events, training, exchanges, among others, bringing more visitors and new audiences to the region. We pretend to provide a different experience to young people as it gives them the oportunity to know new sources of development, a new culture and a practical work while getting to know the history of Portugal and its interior. With recreational and cultural exchanges with local habitants will be provide intercultural learning, foster cultural enrichment through visits in the region (Porto, Lamego, Régua, Pinhão and Douro valley) and develop leisure and environmental improvement activities. Meeting point (day, time, period and place)

1st of july from 15 p.m, someone from the coordinating of the camp will pick you up Metro Station Nassoni – Contumil- 4350 Porto Helena Teixeira: +351 910 715 714

Juliana Santos: +351 960 114158

How to reach to….? (by plane, by bus, by train - timetables, itinerary trip, ticket prices, useful internet address)

The best way of reaching the center is by metro. Metro from Porto Airport starts going from 5:58 am and goes with a half an hour

frequency. The metro ticket for one ride costs 2.95€ since you will pay the 2,35€ Z5 electronic ticket + the 0.60€ blue card, which is reusable, and you keep charging it with electronic tickets as many times as you want. Take the metro from the airport (Purple line - E) direction Estádio do Dragão and get out at the last station, and then change the metro for the one going to “Fânzeres”, from Estadio do Dragão till Nassoni you just have 1 station, that is:Contumil and then Nassoni, get out in this metro station and someone from the organization will be waiting for you. If you travel to Porto through the Lisbon airport, you can reach Porto by train or by bus. If you come by bus, you want to leave the Lisbon airport by Metro (subway) and exit at the Jardim Zoológico station where you will

find the bus terminal connection. Buses pretty much run in the Lisbon-Porto direction every hour, with an approximate cost of €20 (one direction). You can check the schedules for buses here https://www.rede-expressos.pt/default.aspx. If you plan to take the train, you can catch it at the Oriente train station and you can check prices and schedules here https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en. It should be cheaper and more reliable to take the bus trip, as it gives you more options per day, but it’s a matter of finding what’s best for your particular travel scenario. By train from Lisbon: If you are coming by train you must get out in Estação de Campanhã in Porto and then take the metro, that is inside of station in the left side. You must by the ticktet z2 in the metro machines, you will pay for one trip 1,20€ + 0,60€ (for the card). You must take the metro direction to “Fânzeres”, and then, you must get out at Nassoni metro station, and then get out from the metro and someone from the organization will be waiting for you in the metro station.
