Step 1 — Broken Glass

If your display glass is cracked, keep further breakage contained and prevent bodily harmduring your repair by taping the glass.

Lay overlapping strips of clear packing tape over the iPhone's display until the whole faceis covered.

This will keep glass shards contained and provide structural integrity whenprying and lifting the display.

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from any glass shaken free during therepair.

Step 2 — Battery

Remove the two 3.7mm Phillips#00 screws from the dock-connector end of the iPhone.



Step 3

Remove the metal handle from thesuction cup. It's easier and safer togrip the suction cup's base insteadof the metal handle.

Be very careful whenopening the iPhone so thatthe cables under the display arenot severed.

There is a rubber gasketbetween the silver frontbezel and black display assembly.A bit of force is required in thisstep to separate the iPhone'sdisplay assembly. It may help torock the suction cup back and forthto remove the display assembly.

Use a small suction cup near theHome button to gently pull up thebottom portion of the iPhone'sdisplay assembly.

If the display assembly istoo damaged to allow thesuction cup to adhere, tape with astrong adhesive such as duct tapeor packing tape may be used.



Step 4

The display assembly is stillconnected to the iPhone byseveral cables, so don't try toremove it entirely just yet.

Rotate the display assembly upuntil it is at an angle ofapproximately 45 degrees.

Step 5

Continue to hold the displayassembly with one hand, and useyour other hand and a spudger todisconnect the black ribbon cablelabeled "1". (Cable 1 is for thedisplay)

Be careful to insert thespudger from the left, asshown in the picture (UNDERTHE RIBBON). If you try to pryup the ribbon from the right, youcould damage the ribbonconnector and need to replacethe display!

All connectors except theribbon connector mentionedin step 7 release upwards.



Step 6

Rotate the display assembly upuntil it is roughly vertical. This willallow easier access fordisconnecting the remainingcables.

Use a spudger to disconnect theblack ribbon cable labeled "2".(Cable 2 is for the capacitativetouch panel)



Step 7

Please note: You may findon some non-American(Chinese, European) versions ofthe 3G that the flip up plastic tabdoes not exist. In this case youwould slide the ribbon cabletowards the screen until it isremoved. When you assemble it,you would apply pressure to theribbon to insert it back into theribbon "socket."

Some iPhones may havethe connector colorsreversed (black plastic tab, whiteconnector) for connector "3". Makesure you're flipping up the tabproperly, otherwise you maydamage the connector.

Use a spudger to flip up the whiteplastic tab holding the ribbon cable"3" in place. The white tab willrotate up 90 degrees, releasing theribbon cable.

Slide the black ribbon cable out ofits connector, and remove thedisplay assembly from the iPhone.



Step 8

Insert your SIM eject tool or apaper clip into the hole next to theheadphone jack.

Press down on the tool until theSIM card tray pops out.

Grasp the SIM card tray and slideit out of the iPhone.

Step 9

Use a spudger to disconnect theribbon cable labeled "4."



Step 10

Use a spudger to disconnect theribbon cable labeled "5."

Step 11

Use a spudger to disconnect the ribbon cable labeled "6."

If you have an iPhone 3GS, refer to the second picture and use a spudger todisconnect the ribbon cable labeled "7."

Be certain that the connectors on the ribbon cables are perfectly aligned with thesockets on the mother board before applying pressure. This may require amagnifying glass or jewelers' loupe.



Step 12

Remove the following 8 screws:

Five 2.3 mm Phillips #00 screwswith partial threads securing thelogic board to the rear case.

Two 2.3 mm Phillips #00 screwswith full threads securing thelogic board and camera.

One 2.9 mm Phillips #00 screwfrom beneath the "Do notremove" sticker.

Note for re-assembly:

The screw that goes next to thecamera (bottom right orangehighlighted screw) also has ametal strip that holds the camerain place.

Remember to put thisstrip back in place beforeyou insert the 2.3 mm Phillips#00 screws with full thread nextto the camera



Step 13

Use a spudger to gently pry thecamera up and out of its housing inthe rear case.

The camera cannot beremoved entirely yetbecause it's connected to thebottom of the logic board.

Step 14

Use a spudger to gently pry up theend of the logic board closest tothe dock connector.

There is a small goldengrounding tab on logic boardadjacent to the 'do not removesticker'. Be VERY careful this doesnot snag on the side of the casewhen prying up the logic board; itbreaks easily. If you have signalproblems after removing the logicboard, check this ground tab.

If the board won't lift up,double check to make sureall the screws securing the logicboard have been removed.



Step 15

Slide the logic board towards thedock connector and out of theiPhone.

When replacing the logic boardafter installing battery, connect thecamera to the logic board beforeinserting it into the case. Thenmake sure to set the top section ofthe logic board (where the SIM trayis) in place before settling the restof the board in place. This isimportant, as sometimes the SIMcard slot will not align into place.Once the top section is in place,the bottom section can bemaneuvered into place. You willknow the logic board is correctlyinstalled when the SIM tray isaligned with the opening in theiPhone case and the cameramodule seats neatly into its place.



Step 16

Use a spudger to pry the battery upfrom the rear case. The battery isattached with an adhesive striparound the perimeter of the battery.To prevent the battery frombending during the removalprocess, we recommend againstusing just the plastic pull-tab .*Note: Removing the battery isNOT necessary for replacing theGPS antenna. It merely gives youmore space for removing theheadphone assembly (which is alsounnecessary to completelyremove).

The iPhone's battery isattached to the rear casewith a mild adhesive. This adhesiveusually comes out attached to thebattery. If your replacement batteryalready includes an adhesivebacking, you're all set. If yourreplacement battery doesn't havean adhesive backing, you'll want totransfer the adhesive from your oldbattery to the new one.

You can use a hair dryer orheat gun on its lowestsetting to heat the back of thecase. This will help loosen theadhesive bond before using thespudger to separate the batteryfrom the case back.



To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
