Welcome! It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering (IPRIME). IPRIME is the largest industrial consortium at the University of Minnesota and one of the most successful industrial consortiums in the country. It connects companies to a variety of research efforts in the College of Science and Engineering, to the National Science Foundation-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), and several other academic units at the University. IPRIME currently includes 47 faculty and their research teams from 9 University departments, and has support from 33 member companies. The IPRIME Annual Meeting is an ideal opportunity to network with other member companies, to learn about the latest research results, and to meet with more than 150 dedicated young engineers and scientists. IPRIME is organized into 7 research programs, and you will hear about the most recent advances from these programs through workshops, program review presentations, and the poster sessions. With its successful launch last year, we will again offer the Student-Industry Meet & Greet on Tuesday evening, which is modeled after the Faculty-Industry Meet & Greet on Wednesday evening and offers an additional opportunity to network with students and each other. We are grateful to Ecolab for their sponsorship of this event. On the following pages you will find schedules and titles, locations of meeting rooms, and a map of the poster sessions. Complete information is available on our website, www.iprime.umn.edu. Following the Annual Meeting, many of the presentations and posters will be available on our website and can be accessed with your company password. If you can’t find a presentation or poster on the website, please feel free to contact the presenter to request a copy. We welcome your feedback, especially through your company’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Representative(s). Thank you for your support of IPRIME and for participating in the 2019 IPRIME Annual Meeting. Sincerely,

Satish Kumar Bob Lewis Faculty Director, IPRIME Executive Director, IPRIME

Ultra-Wide Gap Materials for High-Powered Electronics

Electronic Materials and Devices (EMD) Steve Koester and Bharat Jalan, Co-Program Leaders

Ultrawide-bandgap (UWG) semiconductors have been of significant interest lately due to their potential to improve the figure of merit of power electronics beyond those possible using more conventional materials such as GaN and SiC. For instance, materials such as b-Ga2O3, AlGaN, diamond and oxide semiconductors all have potential to provide enhanced power-handling capabilities and have reached a point where their potential to realize their intrinsic advantages appears within reach. However, in each case, significant outstanding challenges for each material system still need to be addressed before their true capabilities can be realized in a commercial setting. In this workshop, several leading groups in the area of wide-gap materials and devices will provide a discussion of the latest results and remaining challenges on a variety of UWG materials for realizing the next generation of ultra-compact, highly-efficient high-power electronics.

Guest Speaker Chris Macosko

Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science University of Minnesota

“How Challenges from Industry Motivate Fundamental Polymer Research”

Industrial polymer problems have led to nearly all the advances in my research. In this talk I will share some examples. The first began when I was finishing my PhD at Princeton. A recent graduate working at American Standard brought me a thermoset that he was hoping to could replace ceramics in bathroom sink production. My measurements of viscosity increase during curing really helped him modify his formulation. This generated a desire to better understand the rheology of cross linking polymers. After I came to Minnesota scientists at DowCorning helped me find a model silicone formulation which led to fundamental relations for branching and gelation and one of the most highly cited papers in Macromolecules. That experience taught me to continue to talk to industrial scientists and learn what is challenging them.
