Matt Roberts is one of the most recognized DentalCeramists in the United States. He grew up workingin his father’s dental practice where he becameinterested in dentistry. He attended college at IdahoState University. In 1979 he founded CMR DentalLaboratory.

Matt Roberts is an accredited member of the Ameri-can Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He lecturesnationally and internationally and has worked withmany of the leading clinicians in the country. He ison the editorial board of Practical Periodontal andEsthetic Dentistry, and Signature Magazine.

Matt Roberts is the founder of Team Esthetic Semi-nars and holds advanced level training classes fordentists and ceramists. How does IPS e.max satisfy your es-thetic requirements for a restorativematerial?When I evaluate the clinical situationand the patient’s needs, then ask myselfwhich restorative material accomplishesthe goals of the case, with the exceptionof bridgework, the answer is almostalways “IPS e.max lithium disilicate”.The material is very versatile from afunctional standpoint and displays un-believable esthetics.

What has been your most memo-rable case experience with IPSe.max?Seeing the final result of a diastema clo-sure case where the average facial thick-ness of the restorative material was 0.2to 0.3 mm.

What do you find most beneficialabout the processing of IPS e.maxin the fabrication of esthetic resto-rations?I find the ability to press very thin resto-rations to eliminate most of the needfor feldspathic refractory based veneers.

I can now get the same results withpressed veneers in most situations.

What do you feel are the advan-tages of working with a materialsuch as IPS e.max?We have found an amazing businessmodel for posterior CAD/CAM restora-tions in our lab. The esthetic result ofhigh translucency milled IPS e.max hasour clients excited, the high strengthof the material lets me sleep better atnight and it is a new profit centre forour business.

In your opinion, how is IPS e.maxchanging dentistry?It is decreasing the amount of toothreduction needed to achieve estheticand functional goals. Due to its highstrength, lithium disilicate providesoutstanding clinical performance.

August Bruguera trained as a dental technician andreceived further training at private dental laboratoriesin various European countries. He is a honorary mem-ber of ACADEN (Asociación Científica para Defensa eInvestigación de la Prótesis Dental).

August Bruguera is the author of various specialistarticles, which have appeared in international maga-zines. He also gives lectures at international meetingsand congresses. In addition, he is a member of theeditorial board of “Dental Dialogue” (Spanish issue)as well as of the magazine “Estética”. Moreover,he is the author of the textbooks “Shades – aworld of colours” and “Invisible: Esthetic CeramicRestorations” (with Prof. Sidney Kina).

Between 1999 and 2002, August Bruguera workedat the University of Barcelona as a professor in thepostgraduate program of Dr Tomás Escuín. In 2003,he received the “Bisturí de oro” award. AugustBruguera is the head of the dental lab and trainingcentre “Disseny Dental bcn” in Barcelona and of“Dental excellence”, Spain.

Mr Bruguera, how do you relax?My two big passions are skiing and sail-ing. However, I have added a new oneonly recently: our twins. To look afterthem can be exhausting, but also veryrewarding.

And how do you make your life as adental technician easier?Unfortunately, ceramic restorations arenever easy to fabricate. Experience andnew materials such as IPS e.max, whichfeatures chromatic properties similar tothose of natural dentin, simplify ourwork considerably.

What do you particularly like aboutIPS e.max?For me it’s an utterly comprehensive sys-tem. The large variety of materials andthe different levels of translucency openup numerous esthetic possibilities. How-ever, an esthetic material is of little use if

it does not offer adequate strength. Themechanical properties of IPS e.max areexcellent. Moreover, the system allowsme to either cement conventionally oradhesively.

You use both Press and CAD/CAMmaterials from the vast array ofIPS e.max products. What are yourexperiences with these products?When I bought my CAD/CAM system, Ifirst milled only zirconium oxide. Mean-while, I have started milling all types ofmaterials and objects. However, when itcomes to monolithic lithium disilicatecrowns, I prefer the press technique.

Initially, I thought that due to the highpurchasing costs, CAD/CAM systemswould only be profitable for large labs.However, I am becoming more con-vinced every day that they also can in-crease the profitability of small dentallabs.

Michele Temperani is a certified dental technicianwho specialized in the field of fixed denture prosthet-ics in the USA, where he attended the courses of theTanaka Dental Technology Institute and the seminarsof Masahiro Kuwata at the University of Washington.

For three years, he was the head of the ceramic de-partment at Kijosato Okamoto dental lab in Seattle(USA). He regularly participates in the “ContinuingEducation Project” in Seattle which is held each year.

Since 1990, he has been the co-owner of a dentallaboratory in Florence (Italy) together with hisbrother, where he specializes in ceramic restorations.He has been using the press technique for the fabri-cation of all-ceramic restorations since 1998.

He conducts courses and holds lectures at interna-tional meetings on a regular basis and is the authorof numerous publications.

Dr Urs Brodbeck is a Specialist SSO/SSRD for Recon-structive Dentistry who runs a private practice at theDental Clinic North-Zurich, Switzerland. He worksas an instructor at the Prophylaxis Clinic Zurich andholds lectures on all-ceramic reconstructions andesthetic dentistry worldwide.

From 1986 to 1988, Dr Brodbeck worked as anassistant in a private dental practice in Davos,Switzerland.

From 1988 to 1990 he worked as an assistant inthe Department of Crown and Bridge Prosthodonticsand Dental Materials at the Centre for Dental andOral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of theUniversity of Zurich.

From 1990 to 1994, Dr Brodbeck was AssociateTeaching Professor in the Department of Crown andBridge Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at theCentre for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Zurich.

He was a visiting lecturer at the University of Sydney,Australia, in 1995. In 1996 he became AssociateProfessor in the Department for Preventive Dentistry,Periodontology and Cariology at the Centre forDental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-MaxillofacialSurgery of the University of Zurich.

Oliver Brix is a trained dental technician. Since 1989he has worked in various dental laboratories anddental practices. He specializes in the fields of esthet-ics and function, PFM ceramics and all-ceramics, bio-mechanical occlusal surface design, the electroplatingtechnique and implantology.

From 1990 to 1998 he participated in various con-tinuing education programs at home and abroad.Since 1994 he has worked as a freelance collabora-tor in several dental practices in the field of functionaland esthetic fixed prostheses.

He has conducted various continuing educationcourses and lectures on a freelance basis and holdslectures on the subject of esthetics and ceramicsworldwide, also as a guest lecturer for IvoclarVivadent. Mr Brix, if you could travel throughtime, what would be more appeal-ing to you, the past or the future?As far as my private life is concerned, Iwould like to travel to the past now andagain, but professionally, the futurewithin a time period of around 10 yearsfrom now would be very intriguing.

In your work you keep up with thetimes and rely on the quality of IPSe.max. Why?After having worked and gathered con-siderable experience with previous all-ceramic materials for more than 14years, I have found that the IPS e.maxsystem combines all the important ex-periences and innovations. The systemprovides application flexibility and allowsreliable results to be achieved.

Which product of the IPS e.maxrange do you like to use best andwhy?My favourite product is the IPS e.maxPress MO 0 ingot, which I use for crowncopings. Its fluorescence and brightnessare ideal for mimicking the natural ap-

pearance of teeth in this respect. Foronlays and partial crowns I definitelylike to use the highly translucent IPSe.max Press HT ingot best. Its strength,homogeneity and shade behaviour suitmy needs.

What, according to your opinion, isthe future of all-ceramics, particu-larly of IPS e.max?All-ceramics have a great future and willreplace other restorative materials usedso far, such as metal. I personally fabri-cate more than 95 percent of all crownand bridge restorations with compo-nents of the IPS e.max System.

Dr Christian Coachman received his dental degreefrom the University of São Paulo and his dental tech-nology certificate from Rocha Marmo School (SãoPaulo, Brazil). He completed a dental ceramic special-ization program and opened his own laboratory in1996.

Dr Coachman was an instructor at the CeramoartCeramic Training Centre (São Paulo, Brazil) in 2001.From 2001 to 2004, he worked as a technical con-sultant at Oraltech, São Paulo. He is a founder of andhas been a lecturer at the Insight Group CeramicTraining Centre (Bauru, Brazil) since 2003. He is amember of the Brazilian society of esthetic dentistry.

From 2004 to 2008, Dr Coachman was the headceramist of Team Atlanta consisting of Dr RonaldGoldstein, Dr David Garber and Dr Maurice Salama.He lectures and publishes internationally in the fieldsof cosmetic dentistry, oral rehabilitation, dental ce-ramics and dental implants.

Shigeo Kataoka, Dental Technician, Japan.

Shigeo Kataoka is an internationally acclaimed ce-ramic specialist, teacher and lecturer. He joined theOsaka Dental Studio Co. Ltd in 1969. He attendedYukioka Medical Technology School, which he com-pleted successfully in 1972.

He taught at the Apex Company (Los Angeles, USA)for three years, starting in 1980. In 1984, he estab-lished the Osaka Ceramic Training Centre. Then, in1989, he founded the private laboratory KataokaCeramic Ltd and in 1993 the Osseo IntegrationImplant Laboratory, both in Osaka, Japan.

In addition, Shigeo Kataoka has written various tech-nical articles on dental ceramics and implants. Hisfirst technical book “Nature’s morphology” was pub-lished in 1993. In 2006, his second technical book“Harmony” appeared in Japanese.

Dr David Hornbrook, who graduated from UCLASchool of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA, has consultedwith numerous manufacturers in product develop-ment and refinement. He has been a guest facultymember of the post-graduate programs in CosmeticDentistry at various universities in the United States.He currently practices in San Diego, CA.

Dr Hornbrook is on the editorial board of PracticalProcedures & Esthetic Dentistry, Contemporary Es-thetics, Signature, and is the past editor of the Jour-nal of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.He is also the current clinical editor of the DentalPractice Report, as well as a member of the EstheticDentistry Research Group.

Dr Hornbrook is an accredited member and Fellow ofthe American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Gérald Ubassy completed his basic training as a den-tal technician in Montpellier in 1979. In 1982, heestablished a private laboratory and specialized inceramics. Two years later, he won an award in theKomet-Cd Pen Contest. In 1986, he received the goldmedal as Best Technician in France.

His publications in French and German journals andhis presentations at international symposia and semi-nars have established his reputation well beyondFrance.

His first technical book entitled “Shape and Colour”appeared in 1992, and his second book, “Analysis –the new way in dental communication”, was pub-lished in 1996. Both books were well received in pro-fessional circles. His latest textbook “Tips and Tricks”appeared in 2008.

Prof. MSc. Sidney Kina graduated from the SantaCatarina School of Dentistry, Florianópolis, Brazil, andearned a Master of Science in Dentistry from Piraci-caba da Unicamp University, Brazil. From 1991 to2008 he was Professor of Dental Proshetics andGeriatric Dentistry at the State University of Maringá.
