If you’re reading this and have never heard of Phyrne (pronounced Fry-knee) Fisher then you’ll be surprised by these facts.

Phryne Fisher has appeared in no less than nineteen books by author Kerry Greenwood, and they have sold all over the world. Last year’s TV series was made by the ABC and currently screens in over 120 countries around the world.

Set in Melbourne in the last 1920’s, Phryne Fisher is a detective with a nose for danger, and solving murder. With so many shows on TV today relying on DNA, forensics and

CCTV to be solved, it’s a refreshing change for murder mystery fans, and anticipation for the new series among fans is at fever pitch.

“I guess we did think we’d get a second series, the first series was brilliantly received,” said Essie Davis, who plays Phyrne Fisher and has appeared in other projects like ‘The Slap’, ‘South Solitary’, and ‘The Matrix’ sequels.

“As its such a quality show it is very expensive to make and needs so many resources, the makers have to weigh up whether its worth while and with it screening in 120 countries I’m glad they did.

“We have 3 million viewers a week in France, its hugely popular in Italy, Hungary, and even Brazil of all places.”

Essie wasn’t familiar with the literary character before auditioning, but it took a while for her to grasp the role until she felt comfortable.

“When I auditioned for it I started to read the books, and I quickly realised how many millions of people around the world love them, and that author Kerry Underwood has this massive fan base. I’m very lucky that Kerry chose me, and she said to me at the wrap party recently that we are all in her head when she writes the books

now, which is a great compliment.“I certainly felt more confident in playing the

role, but it did take me quite a while to find her again, it had been over a year since I played Phryne, it took a while to find who she was.

“I think all of us are much more confident this series, the first first eps of the last season were about finding our feet, and we just worked really hard last time and this series we are all determined it has to be better than the last.”

The show continues to draw amazing guest stars, and this season is no different with the likes of Dan Wylie, Rachael Blake, Rhys Muldoon, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, and Julia Blake, not to mention English actress Miriam Margoyles returning as Aunt Prudence.

“It’s great to have so many good quality actors who want to get on this show, and we are so fortunate when they do. They all have great fun, it surprises them, and it’s such a joy to work with Miriam Margoyles again, she is great to have around and she’s so funny.”

The costumes of the show also get a lot of attention, and has even resulted in an exhibition dedicated to the show’s clothing which opens in Melbourne later this year.

“I’m incredibly lucky to wear those clothes, but often I’ll be wearing a fur coat on a hot day, or hardly anything on a cold day. Nearly

everything is hand made for me, its all carefully pieced together along with hats, brooches, boots, fur, silk, velvet, earrings…you name it, its fantastic, I love it. “There’s so much interest that all the clothes are going to be on display in a big exhibition called ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Costume Exhibition’ which is happening in September. There’s just so much interest in the fashion of that era.

“It’s such a unique thing for a show to have such an incredible eye for detail in terms of wardrobe, and they are such beautiful items…they shouldn’t be hanging in a closet in a dark room.”

Essie has a good idea of why people love the show, the books and the character, and with the show running till late November in the coveted 8.30pm ‘murder/mystery’ timeslot on ABC, it is expected to be another hit with fans plus will gain alot of new viewers.

“I think the appeal of the show, apart from the beautiful cast and production qualities, is that Phryne is a force of nature, she’s prepared to get down and dirty. She has such an eye for details, and is ready to shoot a gun, throw a dagger, drive a car, and speak Russian or Mandarin.

“The naughty way she goes about things is what’s so appealing, she’s not just solving crime with her feet up, she’s scaling walls in the middle of the night. She’s the best of everything…a super sleuth!”

As the son of a meat worker and a shop assistant, I grew up understanding the importance of having a job.

While growing up in a working class family I was fortunate to attend university. As a lawyer I ran a successful law firm and employed a number of people.

Now as the Federal Member, I appreciate the impact Government policies have on small businesses, industry and individual workers.

I am proud to have delivered a $932,625 grant for Greenmountain Food Processors, a small meatworks in the electorate.

The grant will assist them to reduce their power bills by $114,000 a year. This will protect over 200 jobs and enable them to be more competitive in a global market.

The new show ‘Wonderland’ has launched to solid ratings, and its nice to see a show where the main star is from our own backward.

Michael Dorman plays Tom Wilcox, and is a graduate of the Queensland Universiry of Technology. He first came to attention in ‘The Secret Life of Us’, which earned him a Logie in 2003 for ‘Most Popular New Talent’.

Michael has been concentrating on film over the last few years, and after roles in ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Daybreakers’ and alongside Robert De Niro in ‘The Killer Elite’, its back on home soil and ‘Wonderland’ where he’s enjoying going to work everyday in an amazing setting.

“We are currently half way through the production, and it isn’t unusual to have a show go to air while it is still being made,” Michael said. “This is a 22 episode series, while most shows get 11 or 12, it just shows the faith from the network to have so many episodes.

“I’m really enjoying making ‘Wonderland’ to be honest, I ‘ve never had a role like this when I am in such a big cast. It’s a really fun drama to be a part of.”

Michael is based in Bundaberg, and loves the freedom he has up in that part of the work, but it really is a case of “#firstworldproblems” when he’s at work on the set in Bondi.

“I live in Bundaberg and yes, during the floods I had a swimming pool under my house for a while. I love going home there, it’s a great place to just hang out. But while I’m filming this show I’m living in a unit on Bondi beach, and its quite surreal going from a seven bedroom Queenslander in Bundy to a small unit a quarter the size but five times the price!

“I sent some tapes from Bundy for this show and they flew me down to Sydney for a long audition process, and I was lucky enough to get the role. Next thing you know I’m living in Bondi filming 22 episodes.

“I often text my wife a picture from the set with the words ‘another day at the office’ attached, which doesn’t always go down too well. I have to pinch myself sometimes filming where we do.”

One of the starts of the show is a 1964 Ford Falcon, which is his character’s prize possession. Michael loves nothing better than driving old cars on set.

“I’m enjoying the scenes when I drive the ‘64 Falcon, I have to admit it. I drive a 1967 HR, so I’m used to these old cars. I remember one scene when I’m driving through the wet with cameras strapped everywhere and I couldn’t see a thing! But luckily I’m used to it, otherwise

it could have been tricky, and there was no such thing as power steering in 1964!”

Wonderland is the latest is several Aussie drama shows that have graced the screens this year, and with the likes of ‘Offspring’, ‘The Time Of Our Lives’, and ‘A Place To Call Home’, its fair to say that when it comes to drama, we are spoilt for choice at the moment.

“This is a boom time for Australian TV drama, as we are competing with so much reality TV, and good shows from overseas. Our homemade drama has to be of the highest quality, and its really showing. I think people are really going to take to ‘Wonderland’.

“Working on ‘Secret Life of Us’ for me was like an apprenticeship, and to go from that,

to work in film, now back to TV… I couldn’t be happier. I haven’t had more fun going to work in such a long time, they are a great bunch of people and the buzz around the show is really positive. I think it will show in the final product, I know that people who like ‘Offspring’ will really love ‘Wonderland’.”

Minister for Regional Australia, Catherine King said the government had committed $15 million to the project, before going into caretaker mode. The rest of the funds will be provided by Springfield Land Corporation, Ipswich City Council, the Lions and the AFL.

“This is big news, not only because of the excitement generated by the Lions’ new training facility, but because it means we have a world class sports precinct for the whole community to use,” Minister King said.

Civil works are expected to begin on the land next year, with completion of the whole project in 2016. Stage one calls an MCG-size main football oval, gymnasium, learn-to-swim pool and main building. The second stage will include a grandstand for up to 2500 spectators and community sporting fields.

Local Federal Members Shayne Neumann and Bernie Ripoll have been champions in securing funding, along with Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, with the Council offering the land at ‘peppercorn’ rent on a 99-year lease.

Mr Neumann said the Brisbane Lions had been working towards this outcome for quite some time. “We knew this would mean jobs and opportunities for sporting facilities that would improve the health in the local communities and the economy of the Western Corridor,” he said.

“The Lions have outgrown their home at the ‘Gabba’; they will still play there but they will be training here, their administration will be here, their gym will be here, and their high-tech performance training will be here.

“The great thing is that the players will be able to connect with youngsters at the schools and local AFL clubs and that will promote AFL. With an epidemic of obesity in Australia, anything that gets kids out kicking a football around is a great thing.

“The Brisbane Lions will effectively become the ‘Ipswich’ Lions in all but name only.”

Lions Chairman Angus Johnson said the Springfield region was one of the fastest growing areas in Australia with massive opportunities for the Lions and enormous exposure for the Code.

“This is one of the most significant days for the Brisbane Lions but also for Australian Rules football. It is a strategic investment in our future… that everyone at the Lions will call home and be proud of. We are talking about a world class piece of community infrastructure.

“This is the Lions’ headquarters but it will be available to the community. Springfield is the centre of southeast Queensland, with road and rail it’s a very easy place to get to.

“We expect it will be very attractive to new players and retaining existing players.

“We draw players through the national draft, but we will have our Brisbane Lions Academy based here but given the growth profile of this area I have absolutely no doubt that in the future we will be seeing people based from here on our list and playing for the Brisbane Lions.”

Brisbane Lions to call Ipswich homeThe Brisbane Lions are coming to Ipswich, with plans to build a $60 million elite training and administration facility on land adjacent to the new Springfield Central Railway Station. It will be called the Centenary Sports Hub.

The best way to do it really depends on where you are coming from in the first place. If you want to burn fat fast because you want to lose weight or you’ve always struggled with your weight, then it’s worth remembering that the fastest way to lose weight is to lose it once. The best way to do to this is to lose it in a way that teaches you how to keep it off for good. It’s about thinking long-term. It’s well worth sacrificing short-term success for long-term sustainability.

On the other hand, if you love to exercise and you want to burn fat fast, one of the

best ways to do this is by varying the exercises that you currently do. There are over 50 different ways to squat, 50 ways to lunge and 50 ways to do a plank. Most people only do about five. Shock your body and you will soon see results.

Boxing, HIRT and cross-fit are also phenomenal fast-fat burning options — again, especially if you’ve never tried them before. Incorporating intervals into whatever type of training you do is also a great way to burn fat fast and prolong your training session.

A new website enables the Ipswich community to keep in touch with police announcements and information, and help fight crime.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said the ‘myPolice’ blog was another addition to the police online network and would boost interaction between Ipswich police and the public by giving officers another way to keep the community informed.

“The blog features crime prevention tips and lets police officers interact with people who may not be able to attend Neighbourhood Watch meetings or drop into the police station to voice concerns,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Through the blog, police officers are able to share information about personal safety, keeping property secure and show comfit images or stills from CCTV to a wider audience.

“myPolice Ipswich is the latest arsenal in the myPolice network as we continue the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour with a police presence both online and off.”

Mr Dempsey said myPolice Ipswich joined a number of blogs released across the state including Logan, South Brisbane, Pine Rivers and Rockhampton. Since the sites launched around the state in December, the fifteen sites have had over 15 millions hits, and the Ipswich site becomes the sixteenth to go online.

“The Queensland Police Service leads the way in this kind of technology, and this increases the capacity of eyes and ears in Ipswich,” Mr Dempsey said. “Not everyone can get to a Neighbourhood Watch meeting.”

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Peter Barron said the launch of myPolice Ipswich provided

an opportunity for police to engage with residents of Ipswich and surrounds at a digital level.

“Our police officers work hard to address crime and this blog has been produced as an additional tool to assist us to engage with the Ipswich community,” Mr Barron said.

“myPolice Ipswich will strengthen bonds between the community and police, adding to the fantastic job police already do.

“Greater public awareness regarding crime and an increased willingness to report such incidents is imperative for the success of myPolice Ipswich.”

“The immediacy of communication through the blog will allow officers to target crime and gather community feedback at a grass roots level which can only assist us in the fight against crime.

“Details of crimes, as well as photographs, comfits of offenders and CCTV footage can all be hosted on the blog immediately after an offence is reported.

“The site should be seen not only as an investigative tool but as a community engagement opportunity for officers and the public to build upon.

“I would encourage everyone who lives in the area to visit myPolice Ipswich and share your thoughts.”

Laclan Nugent, 12 asked: How did you think of stories about bums?

I observed that bums can release noise and gas at times when we least expect or want them to. It’s like they’ve got a mind of their own. I wondered what might happen if they really did have minds—and arms and legs—of their own and could detach themselves from our bodies whenever they felt like it. Atako Nakamara, 6 asked: How do you think of ideas for your books?

I read books that excite me, watch movies that I love and take notice of what’s happening around me. I also spend lots of time telling ridiculous stories to children to see if I can get them to believe me. At a certain point I sit down and try to write some of my many ideas into a story and during this process many more ideas come as well.

Jorgia Paper, 11 asked: If you could be any character, which one would you be?

I appear as a semi-fictional character in all of the ‘Just’ and the ‘Treehouse’ series of books so I’d have to say me. I find that telling made-up stories as if they really happened to me and my friends is the most

comfortable, convincing and fun way for me to write. I’m not quite as stupid as my fictional counterpart, of course, but I’m working on it!

Liam Castles, 13 asked: What would you do if killer koalas from outer space came and took over earth while Terry and you were in the middle of writing a super epic book?

I would definitely write them into the story… that way I wouldn’t have to spend any time imagining or making up anything… I could just look out the window and write down what’s happening.

Ethan Hill, 10 asked: If you could turn any of your books into a movie, which would it be?

Well, I’m VERY fond of the Treehouse series so I’d have to say any of the Treehouse books. The 13-Storey Treehouse has already been made into a stage show which will be touring Australia next year, so I guess the next stop after that is Hollywood!

Welcome to JETSET Ipswich at Riverlink

St. Jospeh’s Primary School in North Ipswich has received a $2 million boost to upgrade the school hall and turn it into a recovery centre for the Ipswich community.

The project will support the development of an industrial kitchen, new and improved amenities, and other modifications that will make it a more user friendly evacuation site as well as more useful to the school.

The funds for the project are from the latest round of the Regional Development Australia Fund. Funding for this project is already included in the budget.   

“Across the country, Australians saw the devastating effects of the 2011 and 2013 on the Ipswich community,” said Minister for Regional Australia, Catherine King.

“We know this area is flood prone and the community here deserves the assurance of a fully-equipped recovery centre, which is why the Federal Government is proud to be partnering in this very important regional community infrastructure.”

Fortunately the funds were secured before the announcement of the Federal election and the government went into ‘caretaker’ mode.

Local MP Shayne Neumann, said funding for the Northside flood evacuation and recovery centre at St Joseph’s Primary School is a well-deserved win for the community and would provide locals with the assurance of purpose-built infrastructure in the event of future flooding and other natural disasters.

“During the 2011 floods, St Joseph’s Primary School hall was turned into a makeshift flood evacuation centre, thanks to the hard work of the church, school community and Councillor Cheryl Bromage,” Mr Neumann said.

“Following that, St Joseph’s Primary School approached me for funding assistance to transform the dilapidated old hall into a fully functional evacuation and resilience centre. It makes sense, as the Ipswich region has experienced 17 floods since 1840 and the residents in the northern suburbs need somewhere to go when it floods,” he said

The community hall at St Joseph’s is the only facility of its kind on the north side for up to 30,000 residents, and the grant will be used to better equip it so that it can function as a disaster centre for the region. This year’s Child Protection Week Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation will have two guests of honour on September 6 - Bruce and Denise Morecombe. Awards will be also presented to locals who have made a contribution to child protection. Fantasy inspires invention at Steampunk showContemporary technology and Victorian styling will collide in spectacular fashion during The Antipodean Steampunk Show at The Workshops Rail Museum from 18 August to 13 October.Set amongst rail heritage, visitors can expect a fascinating mash-up of past, future and fantasy in this collective perspective of what the world would be like if today’s technology had been introduced in the 19th century.

Born in literature in the 1980s as a response to the sci-fi ‘Cyberpunk’ genre, the visual richness of Steampunk work soon transcended the page and its influence can be found in film, fashion and in the workshops of scores of hobbyist, tinkerers and professional artists alike.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said hosting the show is a fun twist on industrial history and creativity.

“We’re used to stimulating imaginations by mixing reality with fiction for our young visitors, so this is an exciting opportunity to exhibit a portion of a fascinating subculture for our adult visitors, especially since its Australian following continues to grow,” Mr Moritz said.

“Visitors don’t need to be Steampunkers to enjoy this exhibition as the beauty of this genre is that it lends itself to a variety of different tastes and creative appreciation.”

The artists contributing to the Steampunk exhibition come from a range of cross-discipline backgrounds including engineer-sculptors, artist-scientists, shoe-makers, jeweller-taxidermists, writers, performers, photographers, film-makers, tinkerers, designers and hobbyists.

The dynamic works to be exhibited include jewellery, shoes, time machines, ray guns, photography and music players, all modified

to reflect 19th century aesthetics.The Antipodean Steampunk Show is

an artisan travelling exhibition. Artisan produces Australia’s largest touring exhibition program of craft and design.

This exhibition has been supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of Australian cultural material across Australia. 

The Workshops Rail Museum, part of the Queensland Museum Network, is winner of Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage & Cultural Tourism.

And it’s no small feat wither, she’s outshone authors like Stephen King and Danielle Steel who have been writing novels since the 70’s and have a

There may be an interesting collaboration for Ed Sheeran (above) on the cards after he tweeted he’s been recording with electronic group Rudimental and rapper The Game. Johnny Depp was also spotted visiting Sheeran in an LA recording studio.Apparently, Lady Gaga was wearing Michael Jackson’s clothes while she was recording her latest album ARTPOP. But these aren’t your regular run of the mill Vinnies bargains — Gaga bought a collection of 55 items at an auction in 2012. She said: The idea was to keep them for him and I actually don’t really want to wear them. They’re Michael’s clothes, there’s a couple of pieces I have to the side and I have his sweaters that I put on — I wear that when we’re mixing and finish up a record. I feel something from the clothing and I gave one of the sweaters to his godson and he really loved that. Spring has arrived early and our hens are laying, and we have an overflow of eggs in the fridge. Here is a recipe, known as Gypsy or Flamenco eggs.

1 Chorizo Diced and Fried½ Cup of Cooked Peas2-4 Eggs500g Tomatos Quartered1 Small Carrot Chopped¼ Leek Cut in Four½ Red Onion Chopped3 Garlic Cloves Roughly Chopped2 Sprigs of Rosemary300g Kidney Beans1/2 Tsp Chilli Powder1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika1/2 Tsp Brown Sugar1 Cup of Veggie Stock30mls White Wine VinegarOlive Oil + Salt and Pepper

On a baking tray, place your tomatos, veggies, rosemary, and garlic with a drizzle of olive oil over the top, and some salt and pepper to flavour. Roast at 200c for approximately 25minutes. The veggies and tomatoes need to have coloured and once this has happened, remove from the oven and put aside. On a stovetop pour in the veggie stock and white wine vinegar into a saucepan on a high temperature and let it reduce by half. Add your tray of roasted veggies and tomatos along with the chilli powder, smoked paprika and a half teaspoon of brown sugar. Combine together well and cook for a further few minutes on a medium heat. Pour into you blender and blend to make a rustic style of sauce. Return to the saucepan continuing on the medium heat and add the kidney beans. Continue to cook for five minutes. In an ovenproof dish, pour in your sauce, sprinkle over the grilled chorizo, peas and crack the eggs over the top. I recommend between 2-4 eggs. Return to the oven and roast your Gypsy Eggs on 200c for 5-10minutes or until eggs are cooked leaving the yolks lovely and runny.

Classic Chocolate CakeThis is one of my favourite classic chocolate cake recipes. It’s gooey, fudgey, moist and everything a chocolate cake should be. It’s also easy to make.I recommend pairing the chocolate cake with a Late Bottled Vintage Port or Muscat to bring out the rich chocolate flavour. I personally enjoy d’Arenberg McLaren Vale Shiraz Chambourcin 2005.

One Pot Chocolate Cake:1-1/2 cups flour1 cup granulated sugar1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup cold water1/3 cup vegetable oil1 teaspoon white vinegar1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Icing: 200g quality dark chocolate chopped1/2 cup thickened cream

Heat oven to 180 degrees celsius. Stir to combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Pour water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla over flour mixture. Stir carefully to combine well and smooth out batter. Pour into an 8 inch tin and bake for about 30 minutes. To make the icing, combine the chocolate and cream over medium-high heat in a saucepan stirring with a metal spoon until almost melted. Stir until smooth. Allow the cake to cool and spread icing over the chocolate cake. Dust with icing sugar to finish.

Students from China, in Australia on a study tour, paid a visit to Ipswich Girls Grammar School, to find out what an all-girls school in Australia offers its students.

The students, who take English as a language option at their school in Jinan, Shandong Province were impressed with the open space and facilities at the grammar school.

School Principal, Dr Peter Britton said that representatives from Ipswich Grammar School and Ipswich Girls Grammar School had been travelling to China for the past couple of years, with visit agents expressing interest in Chinese study tours visiting Australia, to provide the students with exposure to Western cultures. “So, they contacted us and asked if we could take study tours,” Dr Britton said.

“This group is here just for the day but previous study tours have full immersion

lessons in English, including a Korean group now at the school, who leave next week to go home. We also have had students come to us from China whose English is excellent.

“Five students have come this semester and they will study with us long term. Their English is strong enough to sit in with our students in an English speaking classroom and complete studies in a range of subjects.”

Study tours first assess suitability, then some students come back for longer term study.

Helen Song, with the study group, said that some of the students may be interested in studying in Australia.

Chinese students visit Ipswich Girls Grammar School

Funding for art classes for seniorsGovernment funding to a local art school will allow senior citizens to take advantage of art classes normally worth over $300.

Federal member for Blair, Shayne Neumann launched the Life Transitions and Community Engagement Introductory Art Classes for the Older Ipswich Residents program at the Arts Alive Gallery in East Ipswich.

Local seniors will have the opportunity to learn new art skills and stay active in the community with a funding injection of just under $16,000 was found to provide the course to senior citizens.

“This program is aimed at residents over the age of 60 to keep them productive and help them recover from significant events through expression in art,” Mr Neumann said.

“Participants will receive art training including the use of a digital portfolio to store and communicate their art work and other important multimedia material.

“The program will boost their skills and provide fresh opportunities for volunteering, further study and employment. This is a great example of how the we can recognise the crucial role of seniors and the importance of helping older Australians stay active and engaged.”

The funding allocation to CISC is one of 96 grants to adult education

and community groups across Australia.The grants worth $1.2 million will deliver

course places for 3300 seniors across a broad range of short courses from health and fitness to computer skills and art courses.

Mr Neumann said the grants were the first funding round of the $4.2 million Productive Ageing through Community Education program.

This is the second rotation of ADG elements deployed for duty in Afghanistan, working with United States and Afghan security personnel at the air base.

Warrant Officer Mike McDonald from 1 Security Force Squadron said the main role of the security force element was to protect the aircraft, base infrastructure and on-base personnel from any form of threat to the base.

“Airfield security operations is the primary task they consistently train for, and because Tarin Kot has ADF working there, the ADGs have a critical role to play in the defence of that base,” WOFF McDonald said.

“The ADGs operate in what is known as the Ground Defence Area, an area of ground around the air base perimeter out to a range of three kilometres. That’s their area of responsibility in which they patrol and maintain a presence.

“Typically, they go out ‘mounted’ in Bushmaster protected vehicles, and may ‘dismount’ to engage with the local population, maintaining the good relationship built up by their predecessors.”

The current detachment, SECFOR2, took over from SECFOR1 in June this year.

WOFF McDonald said that the “outside the

wire” role was a daylight hours task but inside base perimeter was a 24-hour responsibility.

Prior to deploying the ADGs underwent an extensive mission rehearsal program, derived from lessons learnt during the earlier rotation.

SECFOR1 were the first ADF personnel to conduct training on US search equipment and the crew remote operating weapons system, located at the base entry control point.

While the ADGs are operating in a potentially dangerous situation their mission serves to

validate all their previous training.“The guys are overwhelmingly positive about

their role there; they understand the strategic importance of it and are proud to be a part of it,” WOFF McDonald said.

“It really is the culminating point of all the training they’ve done to date; this is where they get to apply that training in a real-world context. Some of them are very fortunate to do that so early in their careers – in theatre doing the job assigned to them.”

Since the first Brisbane Defence Charity Ball (DCB) in 2006, the DCB has grown to be a major Brisbane social event where the three arms of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Navy, Army and Air Force pull together to raise much needed funds for Legacy.

A voluntary organisation, Legacy provides services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the death of a spouse or parent during or after their Defence force service. Legacy currently cares for over 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and dependants throughout Australia.

“The work that Legacy undertakes to support ADF families tragically affected by service life is invaluable and widely recognised by serving personnel, and on one night during the year we are able to do some heavy lifting to raise funds.

“The DCB is a unique opportunity for Brisbane based ADF units to showcase some of Australia’s defence capability alongside quality entertainment during a spectacular black tie event,” said Air Commodore Tim Innes, Senior Australian Defence Force Officer RAAF Base Amberley

Each year industry sponsors step up and support the ball, this year the DCB is possible due to the association with Australian

The Reserve Bank reduced the official cash rate to 2.5 per cent recently, which is good news for people with a mortgage. However, I’m concerned this low interest-rate environment has confused borrowing market for consumers.

With rates coming down and competition heating up, lenders have had to pull out all the stops in order to attract and retain customers. So, one tactic that has become popular amongst marketers is to highlight the ‘discount’ rate in mortgage advertising.

Back in the 90’s, banks used give their high-income customers preferential treatment by offering them discounts, otherwise known as professional packs, with the hope that they could reel the customer in and sell them on other products over the medium to long term.

Now, as interest rates have dropped and margins on each loan are pressured, the discounting strategy is being used as a broader customer acquisition and retention tool, but with one key difference.

Back in 2003, the advertising of “honeymoon rates’ became popular,

whereby the lender promoted a low introductory rate with

no mention of the true long term cost of

the loan. So legislation was introduced to

control advertising by introducing what’s called

the “comparison rate”.

The comparison rate is a formula that includes all the costs and fees, and it factors in any potential short term discounting to give the borrower a clear picture of the loan’s true rate.

Comparison rate legislation is still in place today. However, advertisers who are looking to get their product out to the market in the simplest and most effective way possible, have moved away from advertising the interest rate and the comparison rate in favour of advertising just the discount. So now you’ll see ads spruiking a “1.05 per cent p.a.” discount off for the life of the loan, but the interest rate is nowhere to be seen, leaving the consumer to dig to find the actual rate. This makes things all the more difficult for the borrower.

So now that you know how it works, I urge everyone seeking a mortgage to look past the discounts and to focus on the comparison rate, the true rate that you will end up paying over the life of the loan.

This won’t always be easy because the discounts are designed to catch your attention and change your thinking. They make you feel like you’re getting a good deal, which may be true for a pair of sneakers or a new sofa. But with interest rates, there is a lot more to the equation than just the “percent off”.

Go searching for your true rate, and make sure it’s competitive with what else is in the market. If it isn’t, go get a better one.

Leading enthusiast publication 4x4 Australia nominated the “go anywhere, do anything” diesel-equipped Prado as “best in class” for 2013. The magazine said the popular Toyota SUV’s name says it all with Prado’s technical designation being the LandCruiser 150 series.

“It (the LandCruiser name) says that it’s a tough, down-to-earth 4x4 that’s designed just as much for off-road use as it is for on-road,” it said.

LandCruiser Prado has 14 variants. The five-door family wagon starts with a GX grade offering five or seven seats and powered by a 3.0-litre common-rail direct-injection turbo-diesel engine.

Higher-specified GXL, premium VX and top-of-the-range Kakadu variants are all seven-seaters with the choice of the turbo-diesel engine or a 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine. GX and GXL customers can specify a six-speed manual gearbox (diesel models only) or a five-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission. VX and Kakadu are fitted with the automatic transmission.

Prado three-door sports-wagon variants are offered in SX and ZR grades with the turbo-diesel engine, automatic transmission and five seats.

The magazine said Prado’s transmissions are well suited to the 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, although it is “hard to go past” the self-shifter due to its slightly better fuel economy.

It said Prado, with its comfortable ride and good noise suppression, offers a variant for everyone.

LandCruiser Prado is Australia’s best-selling large SUV, achieving a record 17,045 registrations in 2012.

This year, Prado became the first vehicle in its segment to post 200,000 sales in Australia with its popularity growing since it debuted here in 1996.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that its Outlander has been named a 2013 “Top Safety Pick+” award winner by the United States’ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
