IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

Jan. 23, 2007, IPv6TF, APAN ManilaLee, Jaehwa, [email protected] Future Technology Laboratory

Page 2: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

Main IPv6 Driving Force – the Government

• MIC/NIA– E-government communications network– IPv6 deployment promotion council

• MGAHA– E-government integrated network

• MND– IPv6 deployment planned to be

complete by 2015

Page 3: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

MIC/NIA’s IPv6 Strategies

• In the past– Supporting only IPv6 technologies and applicat

ions projects thru NIA– Depending upon only telco’s for IPv6 deployme

nt over their commercial networks• Now (since 2005)

– Interested in real IPv6 applications, contents, and users

– Formed IPv6 Deployment Promotion Council this year

Page 4: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

MIC/NIA’s KOREAv6 Project

• Goal– increasing the recognition of IPv6, expanding t

he IPv6 network and activating the IPv6 service

• Many subprojects– VoIP, WiBro, Home network, hdtv, medical, etc

• http://koreav6.vsix.net– Not much English introduction

Page 5: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

MIC/NIA’s IPv6 Plan This Year

• System improvement– IPv6 address allocation, DNS registration, etc

• Router development– Flow-based router with mobility enabled

• Securing IPv6 users : over 200K this year– Provide IPv6-based services of public institutions based

on its e-government communications network– Building large-scale IPv6 wireless network

• 10M IPv6 users by 2010• These goals are more or less related my

group’s joint projects with NIA

Page 6: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

How about Telco’s

• Telco’s pushed for years by MIC to deploy IPv6 over their commercial networks thru IPv6 strategy council driven by MIC

• No Telco’s are now ready to deploy IPv6 as they see IPv6 as business, not as infrastructure upgrade

• They’re still research-oriented even though they have IPv6 deployment plans– KT, SKT, etc

Page 7: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

How about KT

• Joint project with MIC/NIA – KOREN– one of its goals being IPv6 deployment since 1999

• Premium network separate from Kornet– IPv6 over MPLS at PE of Premium network first and then full IPv6

functions enabled over the premium network– Part of access network/Kornet is not ready yet for IPv6 and will ta

ke some time to be ready for IPv6• International IPv6 testbed among PPM by international te

am• Small IPv6 testbed this year by Kornet/Premium team• And my group – it used to be NGI division in the past

– Several IPv6 joint projects with NIA for wider IPv6 deployment and sustainable IPv6 services

My group’s IPv6 projects

• KTv6Net– KT’s own IPv6 testbed in addition to KOREN

• KOREN– IPv6 deployment, experiment, and operation/engineering

• IPv6-based WiBro trial services– IPv4/IPv6 mobility, IPv6 web portal, 2 IPv6 Wi-Fi/WiBro networks over 2

universities, tunnel servers• IP-USN based meterological/oceanic observation system

– IP-USN(6LowPAN), Wireless Mesh Network• IPv6-based administration system for city

– Kangneung City, several IPv6-based solutions(broadcasting, VoIP, surveillance, etc)

• More projects planned for this year– IPv6-based WMN infrastructure/applications with IP-USN over cities aimi

ng at u-City

Page 12: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

KTv6Net

• The 1st KT’s own IPv6 testbed deployed according to KOREN’s topology

• Will be used for many goals– General IPv6, IPv6 IX, etc experiments– IPv6 tunnel servers: hexago and openvpn– Planning to launch trial tunneled IPv6 services

• Planning to connect IPv6 testbeds of commercial IPS’s– NTT, NTT West, etc

KOREN

• KOREN– IPv6 deployment, experiment, and

operation– JP-KR link upgraded to 10G– Plan to upgrade to 20-10G this year

Page 15: IPv6 Deployment Status in KT/Korea

KOREN

• Current situation– 6 nodes: SL, DJ, DG, BS, GJ, SW– L2 capacity: 2.5G ~ 40Gbps– Access links: 155Mbps ~1Gbps– members

• Over 50 members composed of universities and research institutions

• International peerings– APII (Asia Pacific Information Infrastructure)

• JP-KR: 10Gbps x 2 개• CN-KR: 155Mbps

– TEIN2 (TransEurasia Information Network)• SG/EU-KR: 622Mbps

IPv6-based WiBro Trial Services

• IPv6 mobility– Several solutions as well as for IPv4– Standard/non-standard solutions

• IPv6 web portal – ipv6.paran.com– KTH IPv6 portal, we secured 50K subscribers last year

• 2 real IPv6 Wi-Fi/WiBro networks– 2 universities: KAIST and DSU connected to KOREN

• tunnel services– Hexago solution– OpenVPN

IP-USN based meteorological/oceanic observation system

• Wireless Mesh Network– 9 nodes covering 10-20 kilometers using

directional antenna and 802.11g with performance being 10-20M

• IP-USN(6lowpan)– 3 IP-USN sites connected to 3 WMN

nodes– IP connectivity to sensor nodes

Summary/Conclusion – my 2 cents

• Government/IPv6 community pushing for wider/complete IPv6 deployment

• But telco’s resisting real IPv6 deployment at the moment

• Right answer: we as IPv6 engineers/researchers had better widen IPv6 deployment by ourselves to persuade telco’s by using real IPv6 appications

• Thanks!
