As vaccines have successfully turned the tide of COVID-19, healthcare leaders now have a moment to

assess their organization and look ahead. The vast changes initiated by the pandemic are resulting in a surge

of disruption in healthcare delivery models, care equity, and technological advancements. Attend AMGA’s

2021 Innovation, Quality & Leadership Conference (IQL21) and connect with your peers to learn and

share solutions to address these disruptors and other pressing issues facing health care today.

This premier event will be our first chance to come together in person since the pandemic began over a year

ago. Join us in New Orleans to take a moment to look up from your work, share what you have learned, and

connect with colleagues in real time.

This conference is designed to foster an

environment for networking and relationship

building among individuals in top leadership

positions within AMGA member medical groups.

Our agenda features:

• Compelling general session speakers

• Members-only Leadership Councils

• Discussion groups

• Networking activities

If you can’t join us in New Orleans, our IQL21 Virtual Conference will enable you to participate in an interactive,

online educational event. OR, attend in-person and register members of your team for IQL21 Virtual so you

Leadership Council Meetings

Our Leadership Councils are private communities for individuals in top leadership positions within AMGA member medical groups and health systems. Throughout the year, Council members swap ideas, discuss strategies, and share solutions via in-person meetings, private webinars, and an online community.

On Wednesday, September 22, AMGA will host five of our role-based Leadership Councils in New Orleans:

• Chief Executive Officer/Board Chair/President

• Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Operating Officer

• Chief Financial Officer/Finance Director

• Chief Medical Officer/Medical Director

• Chief Quality Officer/Quality Director

Council agendas are determined by member-led planning committees and prioritize critical issues in your role.

Leaders in these roles at AMGA members are encouraged to add a Council meeting to your IQL21 registration as you seek to overcome unique roadblocks, demonstrate your expertise, and strengthen your network.

Please note that the $275 registration fee includes breakfast and lunch on Wednesday.

General Sessions

Thursday, September 23, 2021

8:15 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Time for a New Model of Governance/Leadership Jamie Orlikoff, President, Orlikoff & Associates

The quality of governance that was sufficient to get healthcare organizations where they are today will be insufficient to get them where they will need to be tomorrow. Certain reasons for this are well known: A rapidly changing and evermore challenging healthcare environment; the growing burden of regulatory requirements placed on healthcare boards; and the growing complexity of governance structure and function itself, especially in increasingly large healthcare systems. Other, less obvious systemic reasons are likely even more impactful on governance. These issues are behind the reports of healthcare executives and board leaders noting the growing difficulty in recruiting qualified board members and the increasing burnout among experienced board members. During this presentation, Mr. Orlikoff will discuss principles of best governance practices of the past and how to evolve the concepts to better align with current events and leadership models.

9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Accelerating the Move to Value: A Leadership DiscussionJoanne Conroy, M.D., Chief Executive Officer, Dartmouth-Hitchcock; Tony Lin, M.D., Chief Executive Officer, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic; and David Carmouche, M.D., President, Ochsner Health Network and Executive Vice President, Value-Based Care and Network Operations at Ochsner Health

Moderator: Carol Brockmiller, CMPE, Chief Executive Officer, Quincy Medical Group

The COVID-19 pandemic cast a spotlight on the risk/value-based payment model’s ability to weather downturns better than the fee-for-service model. In this guided discussion, moderator Carol Brockmiller will lead a conversation about the risks and benefits facing organizations as they embrace an accelerated move to value-based care. Subjects include integration, physician engagement, access to data, and provider contracting.

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Major Trends and Opportunities in Digital HealthDavid Rhew, M.D., Global Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Healthcare, Microsoft

Digital health has the potential to transform and/or disrupt health care. During this session, Dr. David Rhew, global chief medical officer for Microsoft, will share key global trends that are shaping the healthcare environment and describe how AI-based digital technologies have the potential to improve health outcomes, reduce costs, and improve the experience for consumers/patients, caregivers, and providers.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Addressing Care Inequity: Using Population Health Tools and Value-Based Care to Serve Patients Better Phil Oravetz, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., Chief Population Health Officer, Ochsner Health

Louisiana is ranked one of the least healthy states in the U.S., and this is not just a statistic to the leaders at Ochsner Health. Chief Executive Officer Warner Thomas states that it reflects the lives and livelihood of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family, and the organization will not accept this as a future state of health of their community. Ochsner has set an aspirational goal to improve the care to underserved communities through intentional collaboration with community and industry partners to create a healthier state over the next 10 years. In this presentation, Dr. Oravetz will describe an innovative program designed with Humana that will identify and address barriers to health care; bring resources into underserved, urban, and rural communities; collaborate with partners to research and better understand health disparities; utilize technology and innovation to improve outcomes; and invest in Louisiana’s next generation of healthcare providers and frontline staff.

Friday, September 24, 2021

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

A Comfortable Place for Healing: Exploring “Hospitals at Home” to Manage Health System Pressures Mary Jo Williamson, Vice Chair for Administration at Mayo Clinic and Chief Administrative Officer at Mayo Clinic Health System; and Jason Craig, Regional Chair – Administration, Mayo Clinic Health System - Eau Claire

The combination of patient demand for consumer-centered models, advanced care-at-home offerings, innovations in technology, regulatory flexibility, and the need for flexible capacity within the healthcare system fueled Mayo Clinic to explore a new care model that will deliver comprehensive care to complex patients from the comfort of their homes, freeing up resources in hospitals to manage COVID-19 patients and other pressures on the health system. In this session, presenters will explore this innovative initiative, which brings together a technology partner, clinical expertise, and patient needs into a care delivery model that allows patient needs to come first.

The growth trends of 2019, combined with the impact throughout the pandemic, shows healthcare employers will need all the help they can get to attract, support, and retain quality talent as we move forward in the “new normal.” AMGA Consulting’s leadership will share insights to help you better position your organization as one that is attractive and supportive of the needs of incoming staff and leaders, as well as a place that fosters a strong culture to retain leaders and team members for a more stable organization.

10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Leadership Lessons from the Jazz Masters John E. Hasse, Ph.D., Curator of American Music, Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of America History

In today’s swiftly changing healthcare environment, success is captured by the masters of innovation, those who find creative ways to lead, innovate, address challenges, and sprint to the head of the pack.

In this lively and insightful presentation, Dr. Hasse distills the wisdom of the jazz masters into seven powerful lessons: listen closely, find your own sound, take risks—improvise, remain fresh—innovate, find and nurture great talent, collaborate creatively, and jam. Hasse shows audiences how the collaborative nature of jazz provides leaders of every stripe with fresh sources of inspiration, innovative ideas, and practical advice for fully engaging and reinvigorating their leadership.
