Iraq’s Reconstruction and Refugees

Task: Review the various articles and the video excerpt to provide a thorough, well developed response to the following questions.

Article: After the War

1. Who is Mohasen? Identify the challenges she has experienced as an Iraqi refugee in America.

Mohasen is a dance teacher who teaches the art of ballet. Mohasen is one of the nearly 59,000 Iraqis who

have been officially resettled in the U.S. since 2007. She reached challenges like prejudice like discrimination,

and job woes for example. Many people are working at flipping burgers, party stores, or unemployed. Many

suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental illnesses

2. Where are the majority of Iraqi refugees settling in the United States and what resources are available to them?

The majority were settled in Michigan, near the great lakes

3. The article states “people had these changes in status.” What is meant by this and provide examples to support.

The people had well-paying jobs like being doctors, or nurses, or lawyers or APRNs, and they were uber

important. Now in America, they don’t have the same lifestyle. They have icky jobs like being global teachers

or flipping burgers.

4. What led many Iraqi’s to seek refuge in America? Does it appear they will be able to attain the “American

Dream?”

The Iraqis sought refuge in ‘Murica because they know it is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And Honey Boo Boo. That is why they want refuge in ‘Murica because it seems that they will live the

“American Dream,” but they didn’t. They lose.

Iraq people forced to seek refuge?

7. What is the estimated cost to properly care and handle the Iraqi refugee crisis? What do many countries such as

Syria believe America’s responsibility is during all of this?

$2 Billion annually. They believe that the US started the war.

8. What are some specific challenges Iraqi’s experiences as refugees in Middle Eastern Countries?

There is much conflict and disagreement in the Middle Eastern Countries.

Drawing conclusions from both articles on Iraqi refugees

Compare and contrast life as a refugee for Iraqi’s in the United States and Middle Eastern countries? Which do you believe is the better alternative? Explain.

Video Clip

9. The video clip provides a brief insight into some challenges for Iraqi students. What are some major issues Iraqi students’ experiences with respect to getting an education? Would this be a problem for refugees in America? Explain. They won’t get an education as well as they would if they didn’t have to resettle. They had much emotional and psychological pressures on them and they would get into trouble. There was much prejudice, too.

10. Explain the following challenges associated with the following five major reconstruction projects in Iraq? Please be specific.

1. Water Treatment

Costs 545 million dollarsThe dam was poorly designed

2. Sons of IraqCosts 370 million dollars“Financial controls were weak”

3. Children’s Hospitals

Costs 50 million dollars“Work moved slowly”

4. First Responder Network

Costs 192 million dollarsDidn’t provide effective means for dispatching

5. Building Iraqi Security Forces

Costs 628 million dollars“Financial data did not reconcile”

11. In your opinion, where do you see Iraq in terms of success ten years from now? Provide specific reasoning.Iraq’s success was most likely based solely on exports to America such as its surplus of oil. The water, hospital, dispatching, and security were very weak, so they didn’t have too many luxuries. Life wasn’t very good.

Article: Iraq after the U.S. Military Withdrawal

12. Identify and explain 5 problems that are present since the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq? Which do you believe is the biggest problem and why?1. The troops retained the embassy in Baghdad.2. They said they left Iraq stable3. The US only had one remaining soldier4. The education, energy, and trade were weaker.5. The post-war alliance was slightly shaky. The biggest problem is that they left Iraq more stable because before it was highly unstable

13. In your opinion, did it appear Iraq was better off under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein’s reign or after? I.e. better under the dictatorship of the democracy? Explain.I believe that Iraq was not better off because Hussein was a cruel and oppressive dictator, and they would be better off being ruled by anyone else. Hussein’s people were tortured, murdered, and miserable due to his actions. As he was taken from power, it was a brighter day in Iraq. After Saddam Hessein’s reign, everything was still better.

Article: 6 Months after U.S. combat troops left, can Iraq go it alone?

14. Despite the many challenges with Iraqi Reconstruction, what evidence is there to suggest a brighter future is on the horizon for Iraq? Be specific. The evidence of a brighter future is that Hussein no longer reigns over the country. Also, it seems that the United States went in to “train” Iraq into a better nation. Plus Britain gave them a more democratic government.

15. Identify specific political challenges that must be addressed in Iraq. Consider various groups such as Sunni Muslims, Shiite Muslims and Kurds?Political challenges would include that they are a nation in the Middle East, where there is much conflict surrounding them. Everything is separated off. The Shiite and Sunni Muslims are always fighting, so it causes the nation to struggle.
