Insight News

Thank God for Hong Kong! This city is a place of both tremendous need and

tremendous opportunity, and being able to come here has been an incredible

experience. I have been in Hong Kong for nearly three months now. The first

month I spent with Al following up on our trip to the Philippines. The rest of

the time I have been filling in as a temporary preacher at the church in Fair-

view Park, as well as getting ready for some pilot workshops that IRI will be

presenting in Hong Kong next year. It’s been quite a trip, and God has blessed

us in ways that we could never have expected.

Being a trade city, the population of Hong Kong is quite diverse, being made

up of several different Chinese people groups, as well as significant minority

populations from other south pacific countries. In particular, many domestic

workers are from the Philippines, coming to Hong Kong to find work that they

cannot find at home. There are a significant number of laws and regulations

concerning Hong Kong’s imported workforce, providing them with some re-

course in the event that their employer attempts to mistreat them. In fact, one

of the ministries of the church here in Fairview Park is to help workers from

the Philippines who find themselves in such intolerable work situations find

legal recourse to address their issues.

With the cultural diversity, changing political and economic environment, and

rapid cultural changes that are occurring not just in Hong Kong, but world-

wide, the people of Hong Kong are very interested in finding ways to adapt to

their constantly changing environment. This has provided IRI with tremendous

Corson’s Concepts cont.

opportunities to help the people develop better ways to understand their world, so

that they can be more effective in their work and live fuller, richer lives. I have

been working with our newest board member, Yuk Kit (Kitty) Ho, to develop pilot

programs for Christian youth programs to help the youth in Hong Kong learn how

to understand and serve God better, as well as secular Education programs to help

the educators of Hong Kong adapt to the demands of the modern, ever-changing

global culture.

So far, Kitty has arranged for two two-day pilot programs to be held next summer.

One will be a workshop for the youth group leaders, and one will be a workshop

for Hong Kong educators. While these are two very different target groups, we are

confident that we can manage both pilots. In addition, Kitty has already incorpo-

rated several key concepts from our Insight Seminar into her work training special

education teachers. So far, the response to her half-day sessions have been posi-

tive, and she has one more session that I can get feedback on before I leave for the

U.S. We are truly blessed to have Kitty working with us.

In addition to my work with Kitty, my work at the Fairview Park church has been

a tremendous blessing. The people here are very welcoming and hospitable, and at

least claim to have enjoyed my sermons. I have been able to preach and teach Sun-

day School for the last eight weeks (with one week exchanging preaching for

working with the youth group), and have seen some wonderful exchanges within

the congregation. In the wake of a sudden death like Ken’s was, it can be easy to

fall into melancholy, but everyone has been very positive and enthusiastic about

continuing to serve the Lord. We are still waiting to see if Cody, Ken’s handpicked

preaching successor, will be able to move here from the Philippines to become the

new preacher. So far, immigration hasn’t been very forthcoming with news about

the visa application. We were hoping to know one way or the other before I had to

leave, but you don’t always get what you want. The church leadership is working

on contingency plans to have other people fill in preaching and teaching until ei-

ther Cody is able to arrive, or learns he cannot come. Please pray for the church

here and all the people who are waiting to see what the future holds for their con-

gregation.

Ken’s family is holding up well, though some days are certainly harder than others.

Linda, Ken’s wife, is in the process of moving to a new apartment that is closer to

her son’s apartment just outside of Fairview Park. While Linda didn’t really want

to move, everyone believes the new apartment should work fairly well. Please also

pray for Linda and her family during this transition period.

Finally, I am heading back to the U.S. soon. Once I get back, I will spend a short

time in the Pacific Northwest, before leaving for Lincoln, IL to serve as the Mis-

sionary-In-Residence at Lincoln Christian University for the 2013-2014 school

year. While in Lincoln, I will be working with missions students, helping them

prepare for the challenges they will face as they work to spread the gospel. I may

also be doing some teaching and part-time work to raise funds for next year’s trav-

el and living expenses in Hong Kong during the workshop pilots. There is also a

chance I may end up working in South Africa this year during the Christmas break

at LCU. In all things, God will be with me, and I look forward to the opportu-

nities He has in store for all of us at IRI over the next year.

Attention: Unfortunately Al has had to come home ear-

ly due to needing urgent oral surgery. If you have been

watching the events on Facebook you already know but if

not then let me explain. On July 6th Al made an emergent

trip to Johannesburg to see the Dentist on the 8th. At that

appointment he found out he has an infected growth under

his molar which will require oral surgery. The pain and the

infection have affected many areas of his

face. He has an appointment with the oral

surgeon here in Casper as he returns.

Please keep him in your prayers. If you

feel led to help with the extra expenses

please send them to

IRI—dental expenses, Po Box 1030,

Torrington, WY 82240.

The Truck fund will continue due to Al having to

come home early. We will have to wait until he re-

turns to Mozambique to purchase so the fund will

remain open for donations.
