IRIDIUM

•  Iridium is the second densest of all elements. With a melting temperature of 2446°C (4435°F), it is exceeded only by the refractory group metals.

•  It exhibits excellent high temperature properties and mechanical strength, being used in certain applications, unprotected, in air at temperatures exceeding 2000°C (3632°F). At these temperatures it also shows outstanding resistance to a variety of salts and oxides. It is unaffected by common mineral acids and aqua regia.

•  This makes iridium an obvious choice for a whole range of high temperature applications. Its high degree of stiffness and resistance to deformation render its fabrication into complex components difficult.

IRIDIUM PRODUCTS ON EXAMPLE OF JOHNSON MATTNEY

All Johnson Matthey iridium products are produced using starting material of a minimum of 99.8% purity. Wire •  Diameter from 4.0mm to 0.127mm

Sheet •  Up to 15kg single ingot processing. Width up to

450mm. Thickness from 6mm to 0.1mm

Discs •  A variety of dimensions are available. Specialised

tooling enables discs to be produced to a flatness of ± 0.025mm.

Tubes •  Tubes are normally produced with a seam weld, the

weld penetration is not removed from the internal bore. For smaller diameters, the tube can be machined from rod to produce a seamless product. The maximum length in this case is approximately 150mm.

Crucibles •  Standard sizes available (30cc to > 6000cc) as well

as wall thickness from 4.0mm to below 1.0mm. Standard crucibles are supplied flat-bottomed, with an edge radius of ~6.0mm. Seam welds are dressed on the inside of the crucible but not on the outside.

TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING FROM IRIDIUM ON EXAMPLE OF CRUCIBLES

1. Induction oxidizing melting in periclase crucible. 2. Processing in digester. 3. Forging of ingot. 4. Electron beam vacuum melting in horizontal crystallizer pan. 5. Crucibleless electron beam zone melting – monocrystal growing. 6. Forging (2000-1100°C), production of billet. 7. Boiling in chlorazotic acid. 8. Rolling (1000-800°C), production of plates. 9. Boiling in chlorazotic acid. 10. Production of crucible shell (600-800°C). 11. Boiling in chlorohydric acid. 12. Welding of shell and welding ofbottom to it. 13. Annealing of crucible at 1100°C. 14. Polishing. *Johnson Mattney has speciality melting equipment, hot rolling and drawing plant, and thermal deposition systems in their facilities at Royston near Cambridge in the UK, and at West Chester near Philadelphia in the USA, to make products under this technology.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

•  The iridum metal nano powder is not pyrophoric, not explosive and not inflammable.

Thеsе features provides a safe working environment and makes iridium nano powder high-tech and competitive product on the international markets.

•  In comparison to other iridium industrial powders, the offered MNPI is significantly better with regard to chemical purity, 5-10 times better with regard to bulk density characterizing flow rate of mass unit per volume unit and 20-40 times better with regard to specific surface characterizing catalytic activity.

•  Unique degree of purification and nano-dispersion ensuring combination of high strength and super ductility at particular temperature simplify the traditional process of iridium products manufacturing and provide capability to obtain new products with single- crystal structure characterized with increased chemical and corrosion resistance.
