Irish Quilt

Fabric Requirements: Based on 40”-42” of usable fabric

Approximately 1/8 yard of ‘extra’ fabric added to each

-Fabric 1 (Light Grey)- 2 yards

-Fabric 2 (Dark Green)- 1 ¼ yards

-Fabric 3 (Bright Green)- 1 ½ yards

-Fabric 4 (Olive Green)- 2 ¼ yards

Other Requirements

-Fusible Web

-Large and Small Shamrock Templates

-(24) 1” hexagon English Paper Piecing paper templates

-Hand sewing needle and thread

Center Block

(Make 1)


Irish Quilt

From Fabric 1, cut one 14 ½” square.

From Fabric 2, roughly cut out a piece of fabric approximately ½” larger than the large shamrock on all sides.

From Fabric 3, cut 24 hexagons using the provided cutting template.

-Trace the large shamrock template onto the paper side of a piece of fusible web. *Note: Reverse the image before tracing if you want the stem of the shamrock to curve in the other direction.

-Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the fusible web to the wrong side of Fabric 2, and then cut out the shamrock on the traced line.

-Using a hand sewing needle and thread, wrap the raw edges of the Fabric 3 hexagons around the 1” paper hexagon templates and secure with a small stitch at each corner. Ensure that you are only stitching through the fabric, not the paper. Repeat with the remaining 23 hexagons, and then press each hexagon.

-Using a hand sewing needle and thread, whip stitch the edges of the hexagons together, following the above diagram, to form a heart.

-Remove the paper templates from all of the hexagons.

-Position the hexagon heart on the 14 ½” Fabric 1 square, ensuring that the edges of the heart are at least ¼” away from the raw edges. Stitch in place using an invisible hand stitch.

-Remove the paper backing from the large shamrock with the fusible web.

-Position the large shamrock in the center of the hexagon heart where desired and fuse in place. Secure the edges using either a hand or machine blanket stitch.

(Make 12 straight and 4 corner)

From Fabric 1, cut:

-(9) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (64) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles and (128) 1 ½” squares

From Fabric 2, cut:

-(2) 1 7/8” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (32) 1 7/8” squares

-(4) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (64) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles

From Fabric 3, cut:


-(5) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (128) 1 ½” squares

From Fabric 4, cut:

-(1) 2 ½” x WOF strip, then sub cut into (16) 2 ½” squares

-(3) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (64) 1 ½” squares

-On the wrong side of (64) 1 ½” Fabric 1 squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.

-Place a marked square on the left side of a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangle as shown. Stitch on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼” and then press.

-Place a marked square on the opposite side of the 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangle as shown. Stitch on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼ and then press to make a Flying Geese.

-Repeat to make (31) more Flying Geese using 1 ½” Fabric 1 squares and 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangles.

-Repeat the above steps to make (32) Flying Geese using 1 ½” Fabric 4 squares and 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangles.

-On the wrong side of (32) 1 7/8” Fabric 3 squares, draw a line from corner to corner.

-Position a marked Fabric 3 square with a 1 7/8” Fabric 2 square with right sides together.

-Stitch ¼” on both sides of the drawn line. Cut apart along the drawn line and then press to make (2) Half Square Triangles. Repeat to make (62) more Half Square Triangles.

-Piece together a 1 ½” Fabric 1 and 1 ½” Fabric 3 square. Repeat with (63) more Fabric 1 and Fabric 3 squares.

-Lay out (32) of the pieced squares with 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles as shown and piece together.

-Lay out the remaining (32) pieced squares with 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles as shown and piece together.

-Stitch ¼” on both sides of the drawn line. Cut apart along the drawn line and then press to make (2) Half Square Triangles. Repeat to make (62) more Half Square Triangles.

-Piece together a 1 ½” Fabric 1 and 1 ½” Fabric 3 square. Repeat with (63) more Fabric 1 and Fabric 3 squares.

-Lay out (32) of the pieced squares with 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles as shown and piece together.

-Lay out the remaining (32) pieced squares with 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles as shown and piece together.

-Lay out a 1 ½” Fabric 3 square and a Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangle as shown and piece together. Repeat with the remaining 1 ½” Fabric 3 squares and Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangles.

-Lay out half of the units from the previous step with the Fabric 1/ Fabric 2 Flying Geese as shown and piece together.

-Lay out the remaining half of the units from the previous step with the Fabric 4/Fabric 2 Flying Geese as shown and piece together.

-Lay out the pieced units and a 2 ½” Fabric 4 square as shown. Sew together into rows and then sew rows together. Repeat to make (12) straight blocks. Blocks should measure 6 ½”.

-Lay out the pieced units and a 2 ½” Fabric 4 square as shown. Sew together into rows and then sew rows together. Repeat to make (4) corner blocks. Blocks should measure 6 ½”.

-Lay out a 1 ½” Fabric 3 square and a Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangle as shown and piece together. Repeat with the remaining 1 ½” Fabric 3 squares and Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangles.

-Lay out half of the units from the previous step with the Fabric 1/ Fabric 2 Flying Geese as shown and piece together.

-Lay out the remaining half of the units from the previous step with the Fabric 4/Fabric 2 Flying Geese as shown and piece together.

-Align the unit from the previous step with a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle as shown and piece together.

-Repeat with the remaining units from the previous step and (39) more 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles.

-Piece together the remaining 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 and Fabric 2 rectangles as shown.

-(10) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (40) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles, (80) 1 ½” squares and (40) 1 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles

From Fabric 4, cut:






-On the wrong side of the 1 7/8” Fabric 1 squares, draw a line from corner to corner.

-Lay out (2) Fabric 1/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangles, (1) Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangle, (1) Flying Geese, a 1 ½” Fabric 3 square and a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 3 rectangle as shown. Sew together into rows and then sew rows together. Repeat to make (39) more matching units.

-Lay out the units from the previous steps as shown and sew together into a row. Repeat to make (39) more matching rows.

-Repeat the above steps to make (40) Fabric 2/Fabric 3 Half Square Triangles.

-On the wrong side of (40) 1 ½” Fabric 3 squares, draw a line from corner to corner.

-Place a marked square on the left side of a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangle as shown. Stitch on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼” and then press. Repeat to make (39) more.

-Align the unit from the previous step with a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle as shown and piece together.

-Repeat with the remaining units from the previous step and (39) more 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 rectangles.

-Piece together the remaining 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 1 and Fabric 2 rectangles as shown.

-Lay out (1) 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle and (2) 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 2, 3 and 4 rectangles as shown. Sew together into a row. Repeat to make (19) more rows.

-Lay out the rows as shown and then sew together. Repeat to make (20) blocks. Blocks should measure 8 ½”.

(Make 4)

From Fabric 1, cut:

-(2) 2 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (4) 2 ½” x 6 ½” rectangles and (8) 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles

-(1) 1 ½” x WOF strip, then sub cut into (8) 1 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles and (8) 1 ½” squares

From Fabric 2, cut:

-(2) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (8) 1 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles, (4) 1 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles (4) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles, and (8) 1 ½” squares

From Fabric 3, cut:

-(2) 1 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (4) 1 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles, (8) 1 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles, and (4) 1 ½” squares.

-Piece together the (8) 1 ½” Fabric 1 and Fabric 2 squares as shown.

-Sew a 1 ½” x 2 ½” Fabric 2 rectangle to the top of the pieced squares as shown. Repeat with

(3) more pairs.

-Sew a 1 ½” Fabric 3 square to the left side of the remaining (4) pieced square pairs as shown.

-Sew a 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle to the until from the previous steps as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.

-Sew a 2 ½” x 6 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle to the side of the unit from the previous step as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.

-Sew a 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 2 and Fabric 1 rectangle to the top of the unit from the previous step as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.

-Sew a 1 ½” x 3 ½” Fabric 2 and Fabric 3 rectangle to the top and bottom of the three pieced squares from the first steps as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.

-Sew a 1 ½” x 3 ½” Fabric 3 rectangle to the right side of the unit from the previous step as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.


Irish Quilt

-Sew a 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 3 rectangle to the top of the unit from the previous step as shown. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.

-Sew a 2 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle, a 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 2 rectangle and a 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric 1 rectangle together as shown and then sew to the bottom of the unit from the previous step. Repeat with the (3) remaining units.


Irish Quilt

-Sew the two halves of the block together as shown. Repeat to make (4) blocks. Blocks should measure 8 ½”.

Border Cutting Instructions

From Fabric 1, cut

-(4) 5 ½” squares

From Fabric 3, cut:



From Fabric 4, cut:

-(2) 2 ½” x WOF strips, then sub cut into (4) 2 ½” x 14 ½” strips

-(3) 5 ½” x WOF strips

-(6) 4 ½” x WOF strips

Quilt Assembly

-Piece (2) 2 ½” Fabric 3 squares to the short ends of a 2 ½” x 14 ½” Fabric 4 strip. Repeat with another Fabric 4 strip and the remaining 2 ½” Fabric 3 squares.

-Piece a 2 ½” x 14 ½” strip to each side of the Center Block and the 2 ½” x 14 ½” strips with the 2 ½” Fabric 3 squares to the top and bottom as shown.

-Piece together (3) straight Block 2’s as shown. Repeat to make a matching row.

-Piece together (3) straight Block 2’s and (2) corner Block 2’s as shown. Repeat to make a matching row.

-Piece the rows with (3) block to the top and bottom of the quilt and the rows with (5) blocks to the sides of the quilt as shown.

-Piece together the short ends of the 5 ½” x WOF Fabric 4 strips. From the pieced strip, cut (4) 5 ½” x 30 ½” strips.

-From Fabric 2, roughly cut out (4) pieces of fabric approximately ½” larger than the small shamrock on all sides.

-Trace the small shamrock template onto the paper side of a piece of fusible web. *Note: Reverse the image before tracing if you want the stem of the shamrock to curve in the other direction.

-Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the fusible web to the wrong side of Fabric 2, and then cut out the shamrock on the traced line.

-Remove the paper backing from the small shamrocks with the fusible web.

-Position the small shamrocks in the centers of the 5 ½” Fabric 1 squares and fuse in place. Secure the edges using either a hand or machine blanket stitch.



Irish Quilt

-Piece a 5 ½” x 30 ½” strip to each side of the quilt and the 5 ½” x 30 ½” strips with the 5 ½” Fabric 1 squares to the top and bottom as shown.

-Piece together (5) Block 3’s as shown. Repeat to make a matching row.

-Piece together (5) Block 3’s and (2) Block 4’s as shown. Repeat to make a matching row.

-Piece the rows to the top and bottom of the quilt as shown.

-Piece together the short ends of the 4 ½” x WOF Fabric 4 strips. From the pieced strip, cut (4) 4 ½” x 56 ½” strips.


-Piece a 4 ½” x 56 ½” strip to each side of the quilt and the 4 ½” x 56 ½” strips with the 4 ½” Fabric 3 squares to the top and bottom as shown.

-Layer with batting and backing fabric and quilt as desired.
