It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive — guaranteed — sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can – properly structured – guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember – absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you – at your convenience and in your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans. Larry Callahan/Field Agent [email protected] 612-209-9484 Knights of Columbus Insurance ARE YOU TIRED TOO?? Hey, are you tired of the same old KC fundraising events too? So are a bunch of your brother Knights. We are in desperate need of some new and fun ideas. As Knights, we need to be able to support the church and the community but it helps if we have some cash. I’m sure you new guys can help us out. Put an email together with your idea, explaining how it works, how many guys you need and send it to Grand Knight Gene Schmidt at [email protected] KC COUNCIL LEADERSHIP - COUNCIL YEAR 2017-2018 The KC Supreme Office mandates that Council Officer elections, and Officer installations, will take place each year in the May / June timeframe. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal society, with core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Beyond the good works that our Council brings to our parish of St. Patrick, and the communities in which we live, each Council is governed by elective Officers, leading with the Office of Grand Knight. Your Council here at St. Patrick’s has been very fortunate for the strong leadership of 10 men who have served as your Grand Knight during our 29 years as a Council. Council Trustees have the responsibility to identify, nominate, and conduct the annual election of Officers each May. We will be contacting those Officers now in place in the next 30 days, regarding their commitment to continue in their present Office, move up to another Office, or decline to continue. We have 12 elective Offices, and ideally, Officers move through multiple positions, eventually leading to that of Grand Knight. Serving in several Offices brings fresh perspective, which is vital to a dynamic Council. It should be noted that while we have specific job descriptions for each Office, the Council also benefits from local practices and traditions. Whether you are new to the Council, or a long time member, this is your opportunity to lead and serve your Brother Knights. We meet once per month for an Officers Meeting, prior to the General Membership Meeting on the second Thursday of each month, including the summer months. To join us, you must commit, or have demonstrated, attendance at this meeting, to be nominated and serve as an Officer. All of the above is a very formal description of who we are. It should be noted that we have a lot of fun doing it. If you are interested in joining us as an Officer, please contact one of us shown below. If you are a present Officer, we will contact you. This year’s guest speaker will be Sean Forrest. Sean has witnessed at many men’s conferences in the U.S. and often is called to focus on the role of men in the family and the Church. So often, men need the strongest wake-up call to “get in the game” and embrace their God-given roles. Sean powerfully shares his personal experiences as a man, a husband and a father working to lead his family in faith. The day begins with Mass at 8:00 am, breakfast at 8:30, the conference at 9:00, followed by lunch from Acapulco Restaurant at noon. Registration is $35 (non-refundable) and forms are available at St Patrick’s information station or online at https://st-patricks.org then click on the “Men’s Conference” link.

News From Nicollet Assembly and the Fourth Degree MARCH 2017

Fourth Degree ExemplificationHow many of you remember the day you travelled, with your sponsor, to begin membership in the Knights of Columbus, takingthe first three Degrees in an Exemplification ceremony? You became a member of the largest

fraternal organization in the United States, and a member of this Council, serving the general membership of St. Patrick’s in a variety of unique ways.I am a member of the Fourth Degree, Nicollet Assembly, thesecond oldest Assembly in the State of Minnesota, with our 100thAnniversary four years ago. There are 40 Assemblies inMinnesota, (280 Councils) and we are the largest Assembly in theState, with some 400 members, which includes 40 priest members.Regarding my Assembly, we have nine monthly Dinner Meetings, which include our wives, which are catered, and held at variousParishes in our Assembly area. We have NO fundraisers; we aretotally self supported though our dues of $38 per year.I have often written about life changes, i.e., retirement from theworkworld, your last kid goes off to college so we have emptynesters, or simply the desire for greater expression of who we areas Catholic men. About half our membership is very much in theworkworld, yet finds time to be strongly involved in their Council atthe Church they attend, yet take the next step up to FourthDegree. The 81st annual Fourth Degree Spring Exemplification will beheld on April 22, in Mankato. It is a full day event for Candidateswho wish to become members of the Fourth Degree, and itincludes activities for the spouses of Candidates.Last thought - This is something you do for yourself. Oh, it’s fineif you have others who commit at the same time, but at the end ofthe day, you become a better Catholic man. The phrase that ourStatewide leadership uses for those who commit to Knighthood atall levels is: We save lives and we change lives”. Here is a newopportunity to live that, and join 4th Degree. For more information, please contact me at your convenience.STEP UP TO FOURTH DEGREEKen HudobaFaithful TrusteeNicollet Assembly

THE WINE TASTING COUNCIL MEETINGJust before the February 9th general membership meeting, the 30 boys attending were treated to a wine tasting event

provided by Joe Pfeifer and G-Will Liquors of Andover. Joe brought along three different types of wine and teeny tiny plastic cups to do the tasting from. Mike Woolridge and Paul Teicher each brought along a bottle of their home made wines for us to try too. To top things off, Mark Landwehr brought a bunch of cheese and crackers and Mark Rohr shared some of his venison

summer sausage. Thank you Mike, Paul, Mark and Mark for sharing with us.We especially thank Joe and G-Will Liquors for making it a fun night. Your patronage at Andover G-Will will be greatly appreciated.

FUNDRAISING IDEAS NEEDED In order to keep supporting the church, the community and the council, we need to generate money. Over the years some of our fundraising projects have become old and boring. We have even lost access to a couple of our recycling events. So, we could use your ideas. If you think of something the council can do, please attend the next general membership meeting, the 2nd Thursday of the month, and bring it up doing “New Business”.
