( Secondcoverpage,foreword) - Insert the following after second para:

'A scheme of labelling environment friendly products to be known 8S ECOMark is being introduced at the instance of the Ministry of Environment andForests (MEf), Government of India. The ECO Mark shall be administrered bytbe Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS Act, 1986 as per tbeRegulation No.71 dated 21 February 1991 published in tbe Gazette of tbeGovernment of India. For a product to be eligible for BCO Mark, it shall alsocarry tbe Standard Mark of the BIS besides meeting additional optionalenvironment friendly requirements. J

( Page 1, clause4.1 ) - Substitute the following for the existing clause:

"4.1 Timber - Any species of timber specified in IS 13622 : 1993 'Indiantimber for fumitures and cabinets - Classification' sball be used in themanufacture of wooden sofa-cum-bed.

4.1.1 For ECO Mark, only species of timber as specified in IS 13622 : 1993from sources other than natural forests such as timber from industrial and socialforestry plantations, shade trees from tea and coffee estates, etc, shall be used fortbe manufacture of wooden sofa-cum-bed.')

'For ECO Mark, the particle board shall conform to the requirements specified inIS 3087:1985 for ECC Mark purposes.'

8.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce to BIS environmental consent clearancefrom the concerned State Pollution Control Board as per the provisions of theWater (Prevention and Control ofPollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention andControl ofPollution) Act, 1981 alongwith the authorization. jf required under theEnvironment (Protection) Act, 1986, while applying for ECO Mark.

8.2 Specific Requirements

The product shall conform to the specific requirements given for ECO Markunder relevant clauses of this standard.

NOTE - The manufacturer shall provide documentary evidence by wayof certificationor dcclaration to Ihis cffect 10 the Bureau of Indian Standards wbile applying for EeOMarlt.·

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 23 May 1989, after thedraft finalized by the Furniture Sectional Committee had b"n approved by the Civil EDpneeriulDivision Council. .. ~ l

Wooden furniture ia beiDI made in the country over a Dumber of yean. However, the sizes. finishand functions of furniture items as made by various manufacturers require to be co-ordinated.This standard is being issued with a view to rationalize the sizes, the type and functional require­ments and finishes of wooden sofa.cum·~ed in the interest of the manufacturers and the cODsumer.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with,the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the results of a test or analysis, shall be roundedoff in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (,..ued)'. Thenumber of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as tbat of thespecified value in this standard.

WOODEN SOFA-CUM-BED - SPECIFICATIONI SCOPE 4.4 Bloek Boardl

Block boards used for the manufacture of1.1 This standard lays down requirements of wooden sofa-cum-bed shall conform tomaterials, functional dimensions and finishes of IS 1659 : 1919.wooden IOfa-cum-bed used as domestic furniture.

3 TERMINOLOGY

3.0 For the purpose of this standard, thefollowing definitions shall apply.

A seat without cushioning material.

Plywood required for the manufacture of woodensofa-cum-bed shall conform to IS 303 : 1975.Any of the three grades of plywood, th@.t is,BWR, WWR and CWR can be used where air­drying paints, enamel or varnishes are to beused or where the plywood is to be coveredwith decorative laminates. Where finishing isto be done with suitable over-drying paints.enamels or varnishes, only BWR grade of ply­wood shall be used. The plywood used shallnot be inferior to Type B.

7 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OFFINISH

7.1 Every sofa-cum-bed shall be checked forgood workmanship and free from any stainand warp.

7.3 a.lltaace to Wet HeatThe test sample surface shall be tested forresistance to wet heat in accordance withIS SI07 ( Part 2 ) : 1975. The minimum quali­fying average rating shall conform to 1 ofIS S807 ( Part 2 ) : 1975.

7.4 Rellstaaee to Marklal by 011. aDd Fats

The test sample surface shall be tested forresistance to marking by oils and fats in accor­dance with IS 5807 ( Part 3 ) : 1971. The testresult should conform to 5 and 'of IS 5807( Part 3 ) : 1971.

The test sample surface shall be tested forresistance to marking by liquids in accordancewith IS 5807 (Part 4 ) : 1975. The minimumqualif)'ing averase rating shall conform to 8 ofIS 5807 (Part 4 ) : 1975.

8 MARKING

8.1 All wooden sofa-cum-bed shall be markedwith a suitable mark identifying the manu­facturer.
