FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the AutomotiveElectrical Equipments and Instruments Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport EngineeringDivision Council.

Hom is an essential safety feature fitment on all the vehicles. IS 1884 : 1993 'Automotive vehicles - Electrichorns - Specification' specifies the requirements considering the horns as a component. This standard is intendedto cover the installation requirements of hom, when fitted on the vehicles.

In the formulation of the standard, assistance have been derived from the following:

ISO 6969 Rood vehicles sound signalling devices - Tests after mounting on vehicleECE R-28 Uniform provisions concerning the approval of audible warning devices and of the motor vehicles

with regard to their audible signalsEC Directive 93-301EEC of 14th June 1993 on audible warning devices for two or three wheel motor vehiclesAIS-01412001 Automotive vehicles - Horn installation requirement

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final valueobserved or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)'. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLES - HORN INSTALLATIONREQUIREMENTS

1 SCOPE

This standard specifies installation requirements ofautomotive horns on all motor vehicles.

2 REFERENCES

The following Indian Standards contain provisions,which through reference in this text, constituteprovisions of this standard. At the time of publicationthe editions indicated were valid . All standards aresubject to revision and parties to agreements based onthi s standard are encouraged to investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent editions of thestandards indicated below.

4.2.1 Every functional modification in technicalspecifications pertaining to installation of horns inaccordance with 4.1 will be intimated to testing agency.Testing agency may then consider whether:

a) Vehicle with modifications complies with thespecified requirements, or

b) Any testing is necessary to establish thecompliance.

5 GENERAL REQUIREMENT

The horn s shall comply with the requirements givenin IS 1884.

4 TYPE APPROVAUfEST

3 TERMINOLOGY

4.0 The vehicle manufacturer shall submit the detailsgiven in 4.1 and 4.2 to the testing agency.

4.1The technical specification of vehicle and hom whichshall include at least the details given in Annex A.

4.2 Modifications/changes in technical specifications.

3.1 For the purpose of this standard, definitions givenin IS 1884 shall apply, as applicable.

3.2 Vehicle type with respect to this standard meansvehicles not essentially different from one another withrespect to such matters as;

a) The number and type of horns fitted on thevehicle;

b) The mountings used to fit the horns to thevehicle;

c) The position of the horns on the vehicle;

d) The rigidity of the parts of the structure onwhich the horns are mounted; and

e) The shape and materials of the body block atthe front of the vehicle which might effectthe level of the sound emitted by the horn andhave a masking effect.

Maximum sound pressure level when determined inaccordance with method of test given in 6.2, shall meetthe following:

a) Between 83 dB (A) to 112 dB (A) for hornsfitted on 2 wheelers or 3 wheelers of a powerless than or equal to 7 kW, and

b) Between 93 dB (A) to 112 dB (A) for the hornfitted on all other motor vehicles includingtractor, 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers of a powergreater than 7 kW.

6 FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT

6.1 Sound Pressure Level Test for Homs Mountedon Vehicles

6.2 Method of Test

The value of the sound pressure level of the hom onthe vehicle should be determined by the followingprocedure.

6.2.1 The measurement of the sound pressure levelsshall be made using a sound level meter in accordancewith IS 9779 and using the weighting curve-A.

6.2.2The sound signalling device shall beoperated at testvoltages of 6.5V, 13V or 26V with tolerance of ± 0.5 V,measured at the terminals of the source and correspondingrespectively to rated voltage of6V, 12V124Y.

6.2.3 For device supplied with the alternating currentthe measurements shall be made with the enginerunning at three generator speeds corresponding to50 percent, 75 percent and 100 percent of the maximum

6.2.4 The A-weighted sound pressure level emitted bythe device(s) fitted on the vehicle shall be measured ata distance of 7 m in front of the vehicle. the latter beingplaced on an open site on ground as smooth as possibleand in the case of devices supplied with direct currentwith its engine stopped.

6:2.5 The microphone of the measuring instrumentshall beplaced approximately in the mean longitudinalplane of the vehicle.

6.2.6 The sound pressure level of the background noiseand wind noise shall be at least 10 dB(A) below thesound level to be measured.

6.2.7 The maximum sound pressure level shall besought within the range of 0.5 and 1.5 m above theground.
