FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draftfinalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering DivisionCouncil.

Branch pipe, universal, is one of the important items of water fittings used for general fire fighting, marine firefighting and for the fire fighting in oil refineries. In addition, branch pipe, universal, is also used for layingdust in mines and for smoke dispersal in rescue operations. The advantages of this type of branch pipe overthe ordinary branch pipe covered by IS 903 : 1993 ‘Specification for fire hose delivery couplings, branch pipe,nozzle and nozzle spanner (fourth revision)’ are that it is capable of providing atomized spray and widespreading curtain in addition to a straight jet and it minimized water damage which is of particular importanceon board ships and in storage rooms. This standard has been formulated with a view to providing guidanceboth in manufacture and purchase of branch pipes, universal, of proper design and construction and capableof giving the required performance.

This standard was first published in 1964 and revised in 1983. This revision has been brought out so as togive complete details of the branches and also keeping its provisions in line with the latest Indian Standardson similar items. Stainless steel has been also incorporated as the material of construction.

The composition of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex B.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final valueobserved or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same as that of specified value in this standard.

FIRE FIGHTING PURPOSE — SPECIFICATION( Second Revision )

1 SCOPE

This standard lays down the requirements regardingmaterial, shape, dimensions, finish and performancetest for the branch pipe, universal used for firefighting purposes.

2 REFERENCES

The standards listed in Annex A contain provisionswhich through reference in this text, constituteprovisions of this standard. At the time ofpublication, the editions indicated were valid. Allstandards are subject to revision and parties toagreements based on this standard are encouragedto investigate the possibility of applying themost recent editions of the standards indicated inAnnex A.

3 MATERIALS

3.1 Castings and Forgings

The castings and forgings shall be made of any oneof the materials given under 3.1.1, 3.1.2 or 3.1.3.

3.1.1 Copper Alloys

Copper alloys used for castings or forgings shallconform to the requirements given below:

a) Sand castings — Grade LTB2 of IS 318;b) High tensile castings — Grade HTB1 of

IS 304;c) Die castings — Grade 3 of IS 292; andd) Hot forgings — Grade 1 of IS 291.

3.1.2 Aluminium Alloy

Aluminium alloy used for castings shall conform toIS Designation 4450 or 4225 of IS 617.

3.1.3 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel used shall be conforms to Grade I orGrade IV of IS 3444.

4 SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

4.1 The branch pipe shall consist of body, diffuserand nozzle (see Fig. 1).

4.2 The shape and dimensions of the body, diffuserand nozzle shall be as shown in Fig. 2 to Fig. 4. The

tolerance on all such machined parts where notmentioned shall be ± 0.5 mm.

4.3 The threads on the diffuser shall be left handthreads (male), and the body shall have matchingfemale threads.

5 WORKMANSHIP AND FINISH

All parts shall be of good workmanship and finish.The forgings and castings shall be sound and freefrom pits, blowholes, scales, cracks and otherimperfections and shall not be repaired or filled soas to hide casting defects. The water way shall havea smooth finish. The exterior of the fitting shall berounded and made smooth.

6 PERFORMANCE TESTS

6.1 Hydraulic Test

The branch pipe shall be subjected to a hydraulicpressure of 2.1 MPa for a period of 2.5 min for thepurpose of locating porosity in the casting. The testpressure shall be applied after all machiningoperations have been completed. Branch pipe whenso tested shall not show any sign of leakage.

6.2 Operational Test

Branch pipe shall be capable of delivering a sprayover a range varying from 150º to complete shut off.

7 MARKING

7.1 Each branch pipe shall be clearly andpermanently marked with the following information:

a) Manufacturer’s name or trade-mark; and

b) Year of manufacture.

7.2 BIS Certification Marking

The branch pipe may also be marked with theStandard Mark.

7.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed bythe provisions of the Bureau of Indian StandardsAct, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations madethereunder. The details of conditions under whichthe license for the use of the Standard Mark may begranted to manufacturers or producers may beobtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
