    FOREWORDThis Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalizedby the Drinks and Carbonated Beverages Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and AgricultureDivision Council.Vodka is an alcoholic beverage possessing the distinctive aroma and taste characteristic of Vodka with orwithout colour/flavour.This standard was first published in 1969 and subsequently revised in 1988.The present revision has been taken up in order to update the standard in the light of current industrial and tradepractices. The requirements of various characteristics have been modified.In the preparation of this standard, due consideration has been given to the (a) Prevention of Food AdulterationAct, 1954 and the Rules framed thereunder; (b) Standards of Weights and Measures Packaged CommoditiesRules, 1977; and (c) State Excise Duty Rules which permit the withdrawal of duty free samples for testing. It isrecommended that sample for testing by Bureau of Indian Standards, whenever called for, may also be exemptedfrom excise duty. The standard is subject to restrictions imposed under these Rules, wherever applicable.For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with1S2:1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values revised. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

    1 SCOPEThis standard prescribes the requirements and themethods of sampling and test for Vodka.2 REFERENCESThe standards listed in Amex A contain provisions,which through reference in this text, constituteprovision of this standard. At the time of publication,the editions indicated were valid. All standards aresubject to revision, and parties to agreements basedon this standard are encouraged to investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent editions of thestandards indicated in Annex A.3 TERMINOLOGYFor the purpose of this standard, definitions given inIS 6749 shall apply.4 TYPES4.1 There shall be two types of Vodkas designated asfollows:

    a) Vodka, andb) Premix Vodka.

    4.1,1 VodkaVodka shall be the alcoholic beverage possessingthe distinctive aroma and taste characteristic ofVodka with or without colour/flavour. It shall be thedistilled alcoholic beverage made from neutralspirit conforming to IS 6613 which may be obtainedfrom molasses, fermented grain or any othersource of fermentable carbohydrates; or mixture ofboth.4.1.2 Premix VodkmPremix Vodka shall be alcoholic beverage made outof Vodka (see 4.1.1) and flavorings, with or withoutcolour and with or without sugar.5 HYGIENIC CONDITIONSVodkas shall be manufacturedconditions (see IS 14348).6 WATER QUALITYWater conforming to IS 14543 or IS

    7 REQUIREMENTS7.1 Ethyl Alcohol ContentThe ethyl alcohol content in Vodkas shall be in therange of 37 to 50percent by volume (65to 87.5 proo~or any other strength at 20/200C subject to approvalby State Excise Authority, when determined accordingto the method prescribed in 4 of IS 3752. The tolerancelimits for ethyl alcohol content shall be +3.0 percentof the declared strength, However, the ethyl alcoholcontent, its tolerance and method of measurement mayvary according to the Rules and Regulations prescribedby the State Excise Authority.7.2 Freedom from Sedimentation and HarmfulIngredientsVodkas shall be free from sediments, suspended matterand any ingredients injurious to health.7.3 Colour and AdditivesVodka (see 4.1.1) shall be free from any addedcolouring matter but may contain permitted foodadditives.Natural or synthetic permitted food colours and/oradditives as defined by PFA/Codex/JECFA may beused in premix Vodka (see 4.1.2). The limits shall bein accordance with EU guidelines.7.4 Taste and AromaVodkas shall have the chwacteristic taste and aromaof Vodka. To enhance the characteristic flavour of theproduct, natural/natural extracts/nature identical/artificial flavour permitted ,under PFAiFEMA GRASmay be used.7.5 AppearanceVodka (see 4.1.1) shall be clear and shall not developany turbidity on being diluted with water. However,in case of premix Vodkas (see 4.1.2), due to presenceof natural ingredients, may develop haziness ondilution with water.7.6 Vodkas shall also comply with the requirementsgiven in Table 1.8 PACKINGVodkas may be filled in glass bottles conforming to1S 1662 or plastic bottles made of PET conforming to

    IS 5286:2005IS 14537 or any other suitable neutral or non-reactivefood grade containers which does not affect its quality.The bottles or containers shall be properly sealed.8.1 All new containers shall be cleaned accordingto 5.6.1 of IS 14348.8.2 Used bottles shall be permitted if cleaned in ahygienic way by the manufacturer as per 5.6.1.1 ofIS 14348.9 MARKING9.1 The following particulars shall be marked legiblyand indelibly on the label/crown/body of thecontainer:

    NOTE Geographical designatiorr/narnes may be used onthe label solely for the products originating from thatgeographical region.9.2 BIS Certification MarkingThe product may also be marked with the StandardMark.9.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by theprovisions of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. Thedetails of conditions under which the license for theuse of Standard Mark maybe granted to manufacturersor producers may be obtained from Bureau of IndianStandards... SAMPLINGRepr sentatiye samples shall be drawn and conformityof the material in the lot to the requirements of thisspecification shall be deterinined in a~ordance witithe method prescribed in IS 3753. ~
