Indian Standard TERMS AND SYMBOLS FOR SIEVE BOTTOMS
PART I WOVEN AND WELDED WIRE SCREENS
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part I ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 1 August 1970, after the draft finalized by the Sieves, Sieving and Other Sizing Methods Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council.
0.2 A series of Indian Standards relating to sieves, methods of sieving, wire cloth and perforated plates for industrial sieves and domestic sieves has been prepared or is under preparation. These include a large number of terms and symbols used for defining screen bottoms. The extensive use of these terms has necessitated the preparation of this glossary; Part I of which covers woven and welded wire screens and Part II perforated plates.
0.3 In the formulation of this standard due weightage has been given to international co-ordination among the standards and practices prevailing in different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the field in this country. This has been met by deriving assistance from the follow- ing publications:
ISO/TC 24/SC 3 (Secretariat-5 ) 8, Terms and abbreviations for woven and welded wire screens. International Organization for Standardization.
DIN 4185 Part I Screen bottoms, definitions and letter symbols for woven screen bottoms. Deutscher Normenausschuss.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard gives various terms and their explanations with illustra- tions relating to woven and welded wire screens. The concerned symbols are also given.

2.1 The terms and symbols for sireen bottoms relating to woven and welded
wire screens hqve been classified into the following main sections-and are given in Table 1:
a) General;
b) Plain weaves;
c) Twill weaves;
d) Dutch weaves;
e) Multiplex;
f) -Plain weaves, precrimped; and
g) Welded mesh.

1.8 ~Type of weave - The way in which warp and weft wires (strands or threads ) cross each other
1.9 Screen. opening _ Th;“z; space between the wires, strands or
1.10 Open sieving area - Ratio of the area of the apertures to the total surface area of the cloth in percent
1.11 Centre distance bet- Sum of aperture and half the diameters of the two ween wire (or meah) W&h adjacent wires, strands or threads of diameters
Weft f, dr and d, respectively (W +4 + 4) measured
across the projected level of tbe cloth. The rimpliied measurement W + d is permissible where the cloth is made up of wires (strands, threads ) of identical diameter d ( -d,=d,).
