    0. FOREWORD0.1 Thisndian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 15 March 1971, after the draft finalized by the Functional Requirementsin Buildings Sectional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.0.2 Utilization of daylight for performing any visual task is healthy andeconomical. The amount of light required for satisfactory and strain-freeperformance of the task depends on the nature of task itself and on otherfactors like contrast, detail, fineness of work and visual acuity. Smallvariations of illumination are taken care of by the adjustment of the pupilof the eye but large variations result in undesirable eye strain. Theseconsiderations apart, changes in daylight intensity from sunrise to sunsetprovide a harmonious variation of the visual environment inside or outsidea building normally welcomed in the performance of visual task.0.3 In this country, during most part of the year, the sky is clear and

    ~sunshine plentiful. Proper utilization of daylighting to get appropriateillumination levels on the working plane in factories will result inconsiderable economy consistent with efficiency of production andworkers well-being. The Central Building Research Institute, Roorkeehas been carrying outresearch and measurements of daylight requirementsfor factory buildings and it is as a result of the investigations made thatthis standard is being prepared.0.4 In the formulation of this standard due heightage has been given tointernational co-ordination among the standards and practices prevailingin different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the fieldin this country.0.5 This standard is one of a series of Indian Standards on daylighting ofbuildings. Other standards published so far in the series are:

    0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is corn lied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express-ing the result ofpa test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS :2-MO*. The number of dgnificant places retained in the roundedoff value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.-1.GOPE1.1 This standard deals with dayliihting requirements inside factorybuildiugs in the tropics and various factors that contribute to illuminatronon the working plane.2. TERMNOLOGY2.3 For the purpose of this standard, the terms given in IS : 2440-1968t shallapply-3. REGOBMENDED VALUES OF ILLUMINATION3.1 The recommended values of illumination for various tasks in factorybuilding are given in Table 1. To get daylight factors from lux valuedivide these by 80.

    4. GENERAL PRINCIPLES4.1 The design of openings, glazings and such similar sources of daylightshould be so positioned as to give levels of illumination given in Table 1.4.2 Usually north lights are employed in factories to provide the requiredamount of-illumination on the working plane. It is to be noted that entryof direct sunlight during certain hours of the day may be a source ofdistraction to the workers. The duration of the direct sunlight penetrationfor any given latitude may be asceriained from Table 2. Location ofwork should be such as to avoid glare from the north light glazed openings.

Daylight factor, which may exceed current requirementsover part or whole-of the building.5.3 Obstructions like structural members, overhead installations, verticaland horizontal machines and the like should be considered in relation tothe glazing. It is essential to foresee the proposed layout of the machines,as ignorance of this aspect is likely to cut down the light reaching theworking plane.5.4 There should be a good distribution of light over the whole interior.Unilateral systems should, therefore, be avoided when possible. Lightcolours should predominate on the surface of the interior, wherever practi-cable. In case of north light rooftruss, shadows caused at working planesby machines and operators can be minimized by providing openings in theside walls and/or by use of light coloured finish for ceiling surfaces.6. FENESTRATION6.1 Some examples of methods of fenestration, providing daylight areshown in Fig. 1 to 9 For these figures, the values of daylight factorsinclude sky and reflected openings for the glare design sky, the value of@85 has been assumed for clause transmission:

    Isr6060-19716.2 Allowance should be made for anything that may obstruct the lightsuch as tall buildings, overhead equipment and large machines:6.3 The glazing should be regularly cleaned, and means of safe and easyaccess provided for this purpose.6.4 The area of glazing required for any particular level of illuminationwill depend primarily upon the position of fenestration adopted. Therelative efficiency of different methods may be compared by calculatingthe ratio of glazed area to floor area in each case.6.5 Methods using horizontal or low-pitched glazing will generally bemore e5cient than those using vertical or steeply sloping glass.

    7. rEDRSIC& PRINCIPLES AND DESIGN AIDS FOR NORTH

    7.1 Since most factories employ north light as the principal source for day-lighting it is useful to know the period of the day over which direct sun-light enters such fenestrations. Table 2 indicates the variation of directsunlight entry throughout the year for several latitudes.7.2 When the length of a bay in a north light factory exceeds its width byfive times one may consider it as infinitely low for the purposes of day-lighting.7.3 The uniformity of illumination on the working plane in a north light~factory depends on the width of the bay (distance between the north lightopenings ), the slope of the roof and the reflectance of the ceiling.7.4 The design for saw-tooth fenestrations for 2, 4, 6 or 8 bay factories canbe based on Fig. 10 to 13. The factors that govern the design are givenin 7.4.1 to 7.4.3.

    I 7.4.1 Figures 10 to 13 give the computerized results for the total workingplane illumination for the types and sizes of fenestrations expressed aspercentage fraction of floor area. These values are for the centre of thearea in question, for factories with 2,4, 6 or 8 north light openings andwith wall and ceiling reflectances 0.5 and floor reflectance 0.3. 7.4.2 In these calculations a transmission coefficient of 0.85 has beenassumed for the glazing. Presence of dust, sashes or bars, as well as beamsor trusses reduces the illumination and allowance for these have to bemade. Tall machinery and louvres on windows also affect the daylight-ing inside.7.4.3 The values given are for the design sky corresponding to a solaraltitude of 15 and an increase in daylighting occurs when the sun go= upin the sky. AS a general rule on clear days this increase will be between 1.2

    to 1.5 times the value given, in Fig. 10 to 13 at noon time. This increaseis attributable to the increase of the total ilhunination on the roof as wellas the increase of the sky luminance.22

For cylindrical shell roof the decrease in InternalReflected Component is proportional to bay width tihen it goes beyond6 metre.7.6 Other Daytighting Apertwes
