SINGLE PICKOF THE WEEK
Trumpet king Ai Hirt has a fancy tuneto start the new year right. Right tothe top, that is. The ditty is written(by Floyd Cramer) and arranged ac-
cording to his specialties and will
score nicely. RCA has it (41-8487).
LONGSHOTOF THE WEEK
High chart action could come to thisslice from a new singing team. It's
about two lovers in love with love andwill woo teens to its favor. On theslow side and it's nicely arranged.
Smash is the owner (1962).
ALBUMOF THE WEEK
Funky blues dished up by a bunch ofEnglish fellows makes this week's bigalbum. The !ads fractured teen listen-ers with their "Tobacco Road" singleand so those same buyers will be
interested in the elpee. Other likelyand unlikely songs (Berlin's "How
Deep is the Ocean") are here. (LondonLL 3407: PS 401).

Bootlegging Back AgainAtlantic Files Complaint
World -WideExpansionAt Chess
CHICAGO - Chess Recordswill launch a worldwide expan-sion program in early Februarybeginning with establishment ofheadquarters in London, Inter-national Vice -President Mar-shall Chess announced in Chi-cago.
An ambitious schedule of over-seas branch office openings willfollow throughout Europe im-mediately thereafter, culminat-ing in a global network includ-ing Asia, South and CentralAmerica by the end of 1965.
Vice -President Chess empha-sized that existing distributorsfould be retained by the parentChess Producing Corp., butthat all releases would now bearthe Chess label and all deci-sions regarding foreign press-ings would be made by the newChess offices. This represents amajor switch from the usualU.S. - overseas relationshipswhereby individual distributorslent their own names to releasesand selected their choices fromthe American release lists.
The international Chess im-print will apply to all of the firm'smultiple releases whether theybe Chess, Checker or Argo prod-ucts here.
Marshall Chess and fellow vpPhil Chess will journey to Eng-land for the formal openingceremonies at the London officesin February.

The specifics, as of presstime, were that Jerry Wexler,Vice President of AtlanticAtco Records, had lodgedcomplaint with the New YorkDistrict Attorney's office, stat-ing that he had reason to sus-pect counterfeit copies of someof his label's disks were beinghawked in large quantities.
A spokesman for the D. A.'soffice confirmed Wednesday(Dec. 30) that an investigationwas taking place, but woulddivulge no further information-in line with office policy ofkeeping mum while checks arein progress.
Rumors FlyingIn addition to these facts,
many rumors-none of themconfirmed in any quarter-werebeing circulated intensely.Prime among them was thatthere were several other com-panies concerned.
Mention was also made thatseveral men had already beencalled into the D. A.'s office forquestioning. Other names werebandied about as well.
One of the disks thought tobe pirated was Joe Tex' "HoldWhat You Got" on Dial, an At-lantic subsid. Wexler made nocomment about this.
Tradesters don't expect toknow any more absolutes untilthe D. A. releases his findings.

It Happened This Week
BY SID PARNES
Expanded R&B Section
With this issue, Record World institutes an ex-panded R&B section under the direction of Anne du-Conge. Anne is well known to disk jockeys and promo-tion men throughout the nation and has served asPublic Relations Director of NARA. It has long beenthe thought of our editorial staff that just as Popand Country music are given extensive coverage, soR&B, with its tremendous impact in the record fieldtoday, warrants the same type of reporting depth. We are delighted to have the services of so talenteda young lady as Miss duConge and we are certain thatin the weeks and months to come, we will all becomebetter acquainted with the doings of her contactsall over the nation.
Goulet Contract
Robert Goulet's new contract with Columbia, whichhas been renewed a year ahead of its expiration time, was occasioned by the success of his single. There'llbe a whole new emphasis now in the single area. How-ever, albums will also be in the works and there areplans for cutting a series of international albumsin 1965. The first one will be Mexican and will becut in Mexico followed by French and Italian albums, also cut in their respective countries. In addition,Goulet expects to wax past Broadway shows with newcasts.
No Nina At Palladium
While the news reports had Nina Simone refusingto go on at the Hollywood Palladium last week, thefact of the matter is that Nina wasn't anywhere nearthe Palladium for she had refused the engagement whenit was offered to her weeks ago. It was interestingto see direct quotes that she supposedly made in somereports of the incident. It proves of course that re-porters can be highly imaginative.
Informative Jazz LetterOne of the more highly imaginative reporters, in
the very best sense of the word, is Del Shields, who puts out a most informative and forthright jazznewsletter from Philadelphia. I first ran acrossDel when he made an enlightening speech before theNARA convention this year. He doesn't know me, butI'm sure a fan of his.
Do 4 Or 5 Small Stations Equal One Big One?From The Mailbag:
Dear Mr. Parnes:Your statement that record companies are facing
an increasing difficulty in getting exposure of newrecords seems to me way off base. Sure, some blg sta-tions, of top 40 type are picking carefully but maybethey have no real reason to give exposure. My point is, have the record distributors ever
given thought to sending releases to some of us so-called smaller stations? We, too, use honest to good-ness 1964 records, of which most are paid for, usuallyat the full retail price. We at KANCY have a policy of airing all types of
music. All releases that we do receive, sent by thefew record companies who really want exposure totheir new and old talent, are "aired."Now, it's a well known fact that not every 45rpm
or LP is going to be a success, but don't you thinkexposure of the artist helps in reaching the "big

CAPERSMechanical Man Getting Rusty?
BY TED RANDAL
HOLLYWOOD-In the Oct. 31 issue of Record World I wrotefactually about this becoming the "Age of the Mechanical Man,"referring to the recent successes of several stations that relymore on a mechanical format than the personality of the diskjockey. There were many comments about the column, both goodand bad. There were misinterpretations, beratings, requests forthe format and a few plaudits. Now that a few weeks havepassed there are some further developments you should knowabou t.
Under the proper competitive conditions this format is justas powerful as it was, but, as was suspected, it has a failing andcan be beaten. It features a short playlist (about 45 records)and relies almost totally on the music to garner and maintain
ratings. In several areas with which I amfamiliar the once dominant ratings held bystations using this mechanical format are slip-ping badly, and if the trend continues it willonly be a few months before those stations areno longer holding the top positions. There areseveral reasons why this is the case, but theprimary one is that the foundation for this for-mat is not very broad.
In other words, a format is like a building:if it is not going to be very large and accom-modate only a few people the foundation need
not be very strong; if it is going to be a skyscraper and servemany thousands of people the foundation must be broad andeasily able to withstand the extra weight and pressures. I havealways maintained that in radio one can start with a smallmechanical base and then broaden and strengthen it as the situa-tion requires, but in every case the format must be strengthenedand improved or it eventually will be toppled, and a new andstronger format will take over. Apparently the foundation on themechanical format is not being strengthened, and this makes ithighly vulnerable.

A star is about to breakthrough from the Los Angelesarea. His name is Jewel Aken, and the record that is going tomake him a star is "The Birds& The Bees" on the Era Label. The label's prexy, Herb New-man, reports Jewel's familygave him that name becausethey expected a girl, and hehas had other hits; however, the other companies alwaysused someone else's name.
Dobie Gray, whose record,"The `In' Crowd," is taking offnationally, headed for Detroitfor the New Year and thenback to L. A. to do the DickClark show. Dobie also has aEuropean tour pending . . .
Johnny Rivers checked into St.Johns Hospital Dec. 28 for acheck-up just prior to the re-lease of his new album titled"Johnny Rivers In Action." .Jan & Dean's new album, "Com-mand Performance," is also duefor release within the next fewdays, and the boys' manager,Lou Adler, tells me it's the most
exciting they've ever cut. Itwas recorded live at "ScreamCity" in Sacramento, the samehall used by The Beach Boysfor their smash "Concert" al-bum . . . Terry Black's newsingle will be released thisweek, and everyone expectsthis one to be bigger than hislast. It's titled "Say It Again"c/w "Everyone Can Tell."
Lorne Greene has just re-corded "Ringo" in French forboth Canada and France whichrequired two different transla-tions because of the differencein the way the language isspoken in the two countries
. . . Vee-Jay's Randy Wood isreadying a big push on the com-pany's six-footer, Hoyt Axton.Included in the label's heftyJan. 8 release of 26 albums isa new LP, "The -Best Qf HoytAxton," but that's not all. Be-fore the month is out, V -J willrelease three more Axton al-bums, packaged from earliersingles and elpees with Horizon.
The Swingin' Set

one or another million seller" which ever the casemay be?
So, why depend on the "big" stations so much? Hasanyone ever entertained the thought of sending re-leases to some of the "second rate stations" and get-ting some exposure by four or five small stationsrather than no exposure by the "rated stations," theso called leaders?
It seems to me that record distributors would en-counter little or no resistance from the large"leaders" if the small stations in the same marketwere playing things they were not. Twisting arms alittle has surprising results.Away from the complaint department-sure enjoy

Expanded R&B Coverage!Record World Anne's Tableaux
Welcomes AnneWith a few notable excep-
tions, public relations has been, over the years, pretty much aman's game. But in Chicagothere is a dynamic little ladywho came on the scene lessthan 10 years ago and pro-ceeded to grab many of the topprizes that come to a hard-working, dedicated "PR man."
Anne duConge (pronounceddew-kon-jay) is her name, andshe will henceforth also be rep-resenting Record World at herChicago offices as well as sup-plying a weekly rhythm andblues column and R&B news ingeneral.
Never deterred by accepted"rules and regulations," Annehas shown she is a "fast -mover." At 10 she moved, withher family (mother, sister andtwo brothers), to New YorkCity from her hometown ofBirmingham, Ala. Her mother, going about the procedure ofenrolling her in the local highschool, was told that 10 -year -old Anne could not possibly beaccepted as a student. Butafter taking a series of exams(all of which she passed), Annebecame one of the youngeststudents in the New York Citypublic high schools.
That indominitable spirit andintelligence have served herwell in everything, from baby-sitting and working as acashier in Bloomingdale's tosupporting herself and familywhile in high school and col-lege; to becoming the CIO'sfirst woman organizer in NewOrleans where she lived for sixyears while married to jazztrumpeter Alton duConge.
In four years with the Chi-cago Urban League, Annemoved from secretary to thepost of administrative secre-tary to the Executive DirectorEdwin C. Berry. She alsohandled fund-raising and pub-lic relations.
After a short stint withSears and Roebuck, Annemoved into the public relationsfield and after some initialhardships proceeded to captureaccolades and her share of theimportant accounts. Headingup an ultra -creative service, specializing in PR, Anne hasworked with many of the topfirms in the Midwest, such asHerbert M. Kraus & Co. and

In ANNE DIXONGECHICAGO-McCormick Place has set many musical and fund-
raisings records, but the affair Sunday, Dec. 20 headlined bySammy Davis to raise funds for the Mississippi Turkey Airliftsurpassed them all with artists like Mahalia Jackson, Eartha Kitt,Dick Gregory and many others giving their talents willingly toa worthy cause. WVON's "Good Guys" conducted a fund-raisingcampaign from vantage points throughout the city to collectfunds for this effort. Participants were: E. Rodney Jones, pro-gram director; Pervis Spann, Lucky Cordell, Bill Lee, Wesley("Hot Line") South and Ed Cooke.
Dj,predictions from down Mobile, Ala., way via Ruben Hughes:"The Worse Thing in Life" by B. B. King; "I'm Getting Better,"Jimmy Hughes; "Smile," Betty Everett & Jerry Butler; "Riverof Tears," Ben E. King; and "Do It Right," Brook Benton. Rubenbets his life on these tunes because he certified that these "aretrue and accurate, as I see and hear them."
Visiting Chicago last weekend was "Major" Lance who believesin "never forgetting friends." He assisted Otis Leavill on BlueRock with Otis' latest tune, "Let Her Love Me." The fans dolove Otis, because this hit is climbing locally and moving nation-ally.
Dick Bruce's belief in Johnnie Mae Matthews' "Baby What'sWrong" is bearing fruit .. . it's a winner and is being played onall stations.
Blue Rock is the label to watch in '65.Eddie Thomas, ABC -Paramount national promo man who keeps
on pushing, has another big hit in "Amen" by The Impressions. This could not happen to a nicer person. Eddie is liked by allfrom coast to coast. He has earned this admiration via his con-stant effort and good judgment at knowing good product.
Gene (the Duke of Earl) Chander can wear his crown again-his latest on Constellation looms big. Gene headlines the RegalTheater show here during the Christmas week, beginning Dec.25 and lasting for 10 days. Other stars are The Impressions,Maxine Brown, Alvin Cash & The Crawlers and others.
WMPP, East Chicago Heights, has a new format and new sta-tion personnel. This adds to the Chicago radio R&B competition.
"Twine Time" by Alvin Cash & The Crawlers on Mar-V-Lusis a hit nationally. We alerted media to see this dance act on the"Shindig" show Dec. 5. Now in town to make sure that "TwineTime" breaks all record sales is Wally Roker, formerly withSue Records. Wally is a go-getter.

'Last Kiss' Signals Cosnat'sBiggest Giant Pop Market Push
Jerry, Steve Blaine ThinkingNEW YORK - "Last Kiss,"
the J. Frank Wilson millionseller single (and 120,000 inLPs so far), has proved to beanything but final to the CosnatCorporation and its Josie label."Last Kiss" is only the begin-ning, for expansion is in thewind for the new year.
Talking with Steve Blaine,President of Jubilee and Josie, with his father Jerry, Chairmanof the Board of the entire Cos-nat operation, Record Worldlearned that the smash Wilsondeck, still hot after about sixmonths, has inspired them to gofurther into the teen market, both singles and LP -wise. Labelsare already very strong incomedy wax.
"Years ago," said the amaz-ingly youthful executive, "therewas great business in catalogselling. Today, from the lowestlevel on up, there's no catalogbusiness, only what we call`cherry picking' or 'cream' LPs.
The big albums are being re-corded with teen artists-usuallyafter they've had hit singles, aseveryone knows."
"Jubilee and Josie have beenin existence over 18 years,"Steve continued, "but other thanRusty Warren we previouslyhaven't attempted to create bigcommercial artists, to spendenough money to create a Pres-ley. We believe we have a bigteen market artist in J. FrankWilson, and we plan to obtainmore like him, by buying orcreating them."
Ninety-two per cent of Cos-nat's single records are pur-chased from indie producers.Rather than surround them-selves with an expensive A&Rman, the company employs sixindie producers and is inter-ested in contacting more singlesknowledgeable producers.
Jerry Blaine also recentlystated that Cosnat plans to setup plants in the East and Mid-west comparable to his plant onthe Coast, Monarch of Los An-geles. Blaine sees each of theseplants as a focal point for press-ing and distribution of indielabels. "The future of this busi-ness tends in this direction, withsmall labels more and more as-suming a creative function andallocating their distribution andcollection problems to larger
BY DOUG McCLELLAND
operations. I want these plantsto service small labels, to press, package and ship to dealers, rackers and one -stops."
On distribution, Jerry feltthat old-line operators with theknow-how will continue in busi-ness, but they will cover moreterritory and diversify by enter-ing rack jobbing; although, hefeels, the distrib who becomesa racker must operate his rackbusiness as a separate entity.Blaine believes the distributorwho wants to be simply a distrib-utor may wind up a broker. "Hewill maintain certain personnel-such as sales staff and person-nel men, but he won't need awarehouse and he will carrylines on a brokerage basis."
Trend Toward MergersSteve opined that a trend of
the business will be a lot ofmergers with indie labels. "Ithink the little guy without capi-tal and the vast facilities neces-sary is on the way out. Whetherthe indies will merge togetheror the major labels will buy, Icouldn't say right now."
Steve also mentioned the mo-tion picture production intowhich the organization had re-cently branched with "The Can-didate," a June Wilkinson -Mamie Van Doren co-starrerCosnat also has on a sound trackalbum. "It opened in Boston re-cently, and outgrossed every-thing in town but 'My FairLady.' It'll open in the NewYork area late in January. Wehave four or five other scriptsbeing considered, too; one ofthem, a color musical fantasycalled 'Once Upon a Time, LongLong a Go Go,' will feature J.Frank Wilson in a couple oftunes if we go ahead with it.The film activity is sort ofDad's baby, really. He co -pro-duced 'The Candidate' at theGoldwyn Studios in Hollywoodand learned a lot while doing it.He feels the movie industry, bigas it is, has not even been tappedyet, and he intends to do some-thing about that."

MGM Releasing Classical Corner
'Cradle' CasterNEW YORK - The cradle
WILL rock. MGM Records willrelease the much -troubled castalbum of the Marc Blitzensteinclassic, it was learned lastweek. It will be a two -record.
The company purchased thetapes from the current produc-tion's associate producerGeorge Avakian and will prob-ably issue the finished productin late January.
Avakian, in discussing theMGM acquisition, said he wasglad to see the album enterthat label's catalog, which alsoboasts Blitzenstein's "Three-penny Opera" treatment and"The World of Kurt Weill."Avakian feels that "Cradle"will be the perfect companionpiece to these long -runners.
MGM has had success in thepast with its off-Broadway castalbums. In addition to "Three-penny," perhaps the best sell-ing off-Broadway caster, MGMhas "The Fantasticks," prob-ably the second best-sellingoff-B'way album. (Rita Gard-ner and Jerry Ohrbach, both"Cradle" players, appear, coin-cidentally, on "The Fantas-ticks" as El Gallo and TheGirl).
Columbia, originally slated torelease the album and one ofthe show's major backers, bowed out two weeks ago aftera dispute with AFTRA overwages the actors would receivefor the recording session.
NY Critics HonorMusic Biz Celebs
NEW YORK - Local criticsbestowed a few year-end awardslast week and recording artists orproductions on record were re-cipients.
Cue Magazine gave its annual"Performer of the Year" awardto Sammy Davis, whose "GoldenBoy" caster, "Three PennyOpera" soundtracker and Re-prise catalog are all available.
The New York Film Criticsnamed "My Fair Lady" the bestmovie of the year and Rex Har-rison the best actor. Columbiahas the tracker of the lauded film, with Harrison, of course, re-creating his classic characteriza-tion. Col also has the originalBroadway cast package.
"Becket" was called the "bestmovie of the year" by the Na-tional Board of Review. Thedialogue soundtrack, starringRichard Burton, Peter O'Tooleand John Gielgud, is on RCA,while the music can be heard onthe Decca LP.
A PS to '64 Top SellersDecca, Angel, RCA Had Clever
Merchandising GimmicksIn a year-end roundup such
as last week's we are apt tooverlook some of the more ob-vious gimmicks that influencedsales of regular -priced classicalrecords. Such as Decca's veryclever "Glory of Cremona"(DXE 179/ DXSE 7179) withRuggiero Ricci playing a hand-ful of world-famous Guarnieriand Amati violins made inItaly centuries ago by mastercraftsmen.
On the disk, Ricci playedmusic for which the violinswere created, producing amemorable tour -de -force of vio-lin playing. Album also in-cluded a seven-inch LP disk ofRicci playing the violin en-trance in the first movement ofthe Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 so listeners could judge thedifferent timbre of each instru-ment.
Hats off to Is Horowitz andDecca for one of the mostimaginative packages of theyear.
Horowitz and Ricci tried itagain on the Vivaldi Seasons. This time the string orchestraplayed world-famous violinswhile Ricci displayed four dif-ferent instruments in the solopart of each of the four con-certi grossi: Spring, Summer,Autumn, Winter of Vivaldi'sFour Seasons. Only lack in thepackage were notes about Ricciand the excellent band of stringplayers Decca assembled forthe recording. (We're suremany of them played in Tosca-nini's NBC.)
Pickwick AgreementNEV YORK-Pickwick In-
ternational has announced thesigning of a long-term agree-ment to create, produce andsupply the color programsshown and heard on GeneralElectric's phono-viewer "Show'n Tell."
The device, which sells for$29.95, shows color pictures intime to words and music and isdesigned for children in thefour to 12 age group. The"Show 'n Tell" phono-viewer isa four speed phonograph thatcan play any size recording andhas a screen on which colorshots appear in perfect syn-chronization with the sound.
Angel's Great Voices
One of the big runaway best-sellers of the year was Angel's"Great Voices of the Century"album which was a sampler ofits great vocal albums in thepremium ($5.98/$6.98) "GreatRecordings of the Century"series. A more stellar collectionof singers would be impossibleto find: Melchior, Lehmann,Schumann, Gigli, McCormack,Leider, etc., etc. Sold to thedealer at a mere 620 and retailedat $1, "Great Voices" took offlike a house afire. Within weeksafter its release Angel's Coveneywas reporting sales of 80,000.Sales top the 200,000 mark bynow.
RCA's 'Requiem'RCA's Mozart Requiem with
Leinsdorf and the Boston (LM/LSC 7030) was released early inthe year as a tribute to JFK.In this two -record set was thecomplete recording of the Mo-
zart Requiem and the RequiemMass said for the late Presidentby Cardinal Cushing. The occa-sion surrounding this live per-formance of the Requiem movedthe Boston Orchestra to playwith a love and devotion thatdistinguishes this recordingamong the many, more mundanethey have issued. RCA is to becongratulated on the tasteful ad-vertising campaign which mere-ly announced the package as"Now Available." The nation, still mourning the late President, got the message and purchasedthis set as a document of asolemn occasion in memory ofa beloved leader.
Choice of the Mozart "Re-quiem" for the Requiem Massfor the late President was mostappropriate since Mozart, likethe President, died in his youth,at 36, with much of his promiseunfulfilled. In fact, Mozart diedwhile working on this "Requiem"and it remained for his assistantto complete it from his sketches.

'Babes' Proves
Tuneful SpoofBY DAVE FINKLE
NEW YORK-"Babes in theWood," a new off-Broadwaymusical which opened lastweek at the Orpheum, is reallylike the image its title evokes. It is pretty, frolicsome, naiveand tends to wander in circles.
The origin of Rick Besoyan'stale is Shakespeare's "A Mid-summer Night's Dream," whichlibrettist -lyricist -composer Be-soyan whittled down to itsbarest plot outline-two sets oflovers crossed up in their pur-suits of each other by twoplayful demi-golds.
Certainly Besoyan was wiseto pare away some of theShakespeare trappings, but un-fortunately he went too far andwound up with a story thatwas too frequently simple-minded when it should havebeen simple.
The bones of "Dream" arejust not enough to hang a fullevening's worth of musicalcomedy on even in the most in-ventive hands
BesoyanInventive
And Besoyan is definitely in-ventive. For the musical, heconcocted a large number oftunes, and many, in fact, all arecrisp and entertaining. Butwhen just about every song hasto be the outburst-brassy orsoft-of a star-crossed lover, acertain sameness sets in. Thekey of C is fresh and clear, butnot over and over.
The best tunes in the showare the title song (reprisedmany a time), "Love is Lovely,""Moon Madness" and a knock-out Jolson parody, "Mother."No cast album has been setyet, but if one apears, it'll bea musical attraction.
The cast works hard to muchavail with Ruth Buzzi, a knock-about comedienne, Danny Car-roll, Kenneth McMillan andCarol Glade in form -fittingtoga, taking the top acting -singing honors.
The sets, by Paul Morrison, and costumes, by HowardBarker, are exquisite - reallysomething to look at. A well -edited hour's worth of "Babes"would be worth the price ofadmission; two hours worth isnot.

Thirty-two hit songs -16 rec-ords-qualify for inclusion inthe first release, based on theirsales history and chart record. With a brief three-year historyas a label, Philips is particularlygratified to inaugurate this spe-cial series as tangible proof ofits past product successes.
The artists represented inthe first Double Hit release arediversified and the materialoffers the broadest possiblerange.
The series is being madeavailable initially through aPre -Pack which contains 72records and sets up in half aminute.

Many stations using the year-end RPI news wrapup file it forfuture use in their record libra-ries or newsrooms. Many of the"actualities" can be used as back-ground material for news stor-ies that develop throughout theyears to come. The RPI showwas a good source of materialabout the late President Ken-nedy in November, 1963, pro-viding the actual sound of thePresident's voice which stationswere able to use in their cover-age of the tragic events in Dal-las.
Following the President's as-sassination, RPI produced thebest-selling album "John Fitz-gerald Kennedy -A MemorialAlbum" for Premier Albums,Inc. 1960 and 1961 year -in -re-view albums are currently beingworked on with Gateway.
