Executive Summary

Themes: Declining return across all asset classes due to bearish outlook on major economies...

Equities: Is the Bear Home for Christmas? The NSE gave away last week’s gains to close 2% lower. The NSE 20

Share Index lost 83 points closing at 4083.52. The NASI was down 92.2% as the FTSE 15 and FTSE 25 were down

2.68% and 2.42% respectively.Foreign investor participation increased to 61.2% in the week with an increased net

inflow at Kes.839Mn. Market Capitalization marginally decreased toKes.1.234Tn.

Fixed Income: Yields trend lower...The FTSE Bond Index on the other hand was down 1.50 points from 96.364 to

94.863. Yields extended their downward trend with the 91-Day closing at 8.45%, 182-day T-Bill at 9.34% and the

364-Day T-Bill at 11.71%.

Currency: KES closes the week stronger... It managed to appreciate most against the Uganda Shilling (+1.09%)

followed closely by the Euro (+0.71%). It lost ground to the Rupee (-2.15%) and to the South African Rand (-0.5%)

Commodities: Bearish Outlook on Oil... Brent Crude Oil lost to close at USD 111.23 against USD.113.36

observed last week. We see further price declines in the offing driven by decreasing economic output from

both the US (budget cut driven) and Eurozone (debt crisis driven).

Equities:

Is the Bear Home for Christmas?

The NSE gave away last week’s gains to close 2% lower. The NSE 20 Share Index lost83 points closing at 4083.52. The NASI

was down 92.2% as the FTSE 15 and FTSE 25 were down 2.68% and 2.42% respectively.The FTSE Bond Index on the other

hand was down 1.50 points from 96.364 to 94.863.Foreign investor participation increased to 61.2% in the week with an

increased net inflow at Kes.839. Market Capitalization marginally decreasedtoKes.1.234Tn.The week’s top gainer was

Sameer Africa which gained 14.08%.The biggest loser was Mumias Sugar Company, which saw its value decline 11.5%.

Safaricom was the most traded counter for the second week in a row, moving 166, 125, 700 shares.

Our weekly segmental analysis (Table 4) shows an overall declinein market performance this

weekwith only threesectors gaining in value. The market as a whole lost 0.48%weighed down by the

loss of value in 7 segments.

The Automobiles and Accessories Segment was the best performer this week gaining 3.52%. This

performance is attributed to Sameer E.A Ltd (NSE: FIRE) gaining 14.08% to VWAP Kes.4.05 up from

last week’s close of Kes.3.55.

The Banking Segment slumped to the bottom, down 2.70% dragged down Barclays Bank of KenyaLtd

(NSE: BBK) which was down 5.54% to close at Kes.14.50 from Kes.15.53.

KES Rebounds in Week…

Performance: The KES closed the week stronger, gaining against most major pairs. It managed to appreciate most

against the Uganda Shilling (+1.09%) followed closely by the Euro (+0.71%). It lost ground to the Rupee (-2.15%) and

to the South African Rand (-0.5%)

Technical Analysis and Outlook: The graph below shows the Kairi Indicator that shows the major turning

points in a trend. The USDKES pair endured oscillating activities earlier in the year but has maintained a

relatively stable performance in the past week despite the pressure. We do anticipate the USDKES 88 level to

be tested in the year.
