Would you know if you were overloading your racking?

JUNE | COVERSTORY SUPPLY NETWORK AFRICA

Like a rusty old railway line, damaged by the sun and overloaded trains, perhaps your racking system can no longer carry what you think it can. The racking in your warehouse may have just always just been there, or perhaps it is a new system that you had installed only a few years ago. Wherever it came from, do you know that it can carry the load you are putting on it? For most Infrastructure Maintenance Managers or Warehouse Managers, this is a simple, yes answer…But give it a bit more thought…Has your stock profile changed over the years or did it just make sense to lift the first beam up and put the higher pallets on the floor. There are many factors that are often over looked that impact the safe carrying capacity of your racking system.

Supply Network Africa, met with Cullem Mckay, sales Director of ROSInternationalRackRepairSAtotryun-wrapwhatmakes racking unsafe andwhatcanwedotoensurethesafetyofourworkplace.

At the forefrontof rackmaintenance, modificationand installation inSouthAfrica, ROS International looks at aseeminglyinnocuoustaskofaninstancewhere the racking beam levels are adjusted.

Implications of adjusting the beam levels of your

racking

Asimpletasksuchasmovingabeamlevel up to make way for a higherpallet can have far reaching conse-quences to the overall carrying ca-pacity of your system. By movingthe beams further apart, the sys-

tems carrying capacity is reduced. This isclearlyevidenced inthebelow example:

A typical 1.9mm thick bottle neckframewiththespacingbetweenbeamsof1600mmcancarryabout8400Kg’s.If youmove the beams further apartbyaslittleas300mmto1900mm,thecarrying capacity reduces to about6830Kg’s. This isa lossofmorethan20% of its original capacity. Couplethiswiththefactthatthesystemhas4beamlevelstotheheightsupporting2 pallets of 1000Kg’s each. Original-lythesystemwassafeasthecapable capacitywas 8400Kg’s and theactu-al loadedcapacitywasonly8000Kg’s.When you move the beams apart, theactualpalletweightmayhave in-creased due to the higher pallet, butlet’sjustsayforargumentsake,thatthepalletweightremainsat1000Kg’s.Youwould then still be loading 8000Kg’sontherack,butnowitcanonlysafelysupport6830Kg’s.Thesystemisdan-gerouslyoverloadedandrunstheriskofcollapsing.

Additional things to consider when tryingtoidentifyifyourrackingissafeornot:

Does my racking have safe work load signs

fitted?

It is a Health and Safety regulationthatallrackingmustbefittedwithval-id safety signs clearly confirming thecarryingcapacity that therackingcansupport.

Is my racking certified?

Within the last 12 months, has yourrackingbeen inspectedbyanaccred-itedRack Inspector to confirm condi-tionofrack,specificationandcarryingcapacity.

Is my racking still under Guarantee or has it

expired?

Keep inmind that should the installation bemodified in any way, by a party notauthorisedtodoso, itmayleadtotherackwarranteebeingvoid.

When last was your racking properly inspected

and repaired?

Forklift drivers are going to ,at sometime, bump your racking. It is goodpractice to enter into a service levelagreement with a professional rackrepair company, whereby they will inspecttherackingonatleastaquar-terly basis, repair as required and ensurethesafetyofthesystemisnotcompromised. making complexity simpleTogether we are stronger is taking on new meaning in the world of logistics. The freely navigating Open Shuttles by KNAPP are distinguishing themselves with their swarm intelligence.

The workloads within a warehouse are balanced through intelligent adaptive order distribution across an entire fleet. The vehicles communicate constantly with one another and distribute orders flexibly. This opens up new opportunities to optimize routes and transit times. Thanks to swarm intelligence, for the first time we can make transport capacities available at the right time, at the right place and in the right amount.

“Transformation? Tech in the Driver’s Hands”

By David Slotow, CEO at Trackmatic

According to a recent Gallup poll, the biggest driver of busi-ness to business (B2B) success is meaningful customer impact and yet around 60% of customers are reporting that they’re indifferent in their engagement. Gallup took the research deeper and found that customer engagement had a multiplier effect on business growth. For the supply chain in-dustry, whether focusing on B2B or B2C (business to customer), customer engagement is vital for long-term, sustainable success.

Health and Safety Training

The term that causes most of the industrial community to sigh in frustration, it is widely believed that Health and Safety Training is a waste of time and company resources. Should Your Next DC Be in an Urban Shopping Center?

Retail is in the Midst of the Biggest Transformation since the Rise of Big Box Stores.

E-Commerce is growing steadily, carving out a larger percentage of retail sales. Last holiday season online orders made up 21% of total retail sales and this year will be even higher. At the same time, Amazon is setting a high bar for service. With its growing distribution network they can offer same day delivery to more than 77 million Amer-icans on millions of products from apparel to auto parts, to office supplies and everything between. Traditional retailers must now figure out how to rationalise and leverage their existing store assets and distribu-tion footprint around this new set of customer expectations.

To remain competitive, companieshavetriedanumberofoptions:

•BuildingdedicatedeCommerceDCs,warehouse-within-a-warehouse operations,andfull-scaleom ni-channelfacilities.•Usingthird-partylogisticsproviders and enabling drop-shipping from suppliers.•Increasingautomationandaddinglabourforshort-termscaleduringpeaks.•Addingship-from-storecapabilitiesincluding“buyonline,pick-upin-store”and“shipfromstoretoconsumer”.

Althoughthesetacticshavehadsomesuccess, theycomewithahostof in-ventory, efficiency and profitabilitychallenges. Retailers still find them-selves limited in their flexibility andability to respond quickly to changeand with the labour pool tighteninginmanykeymarkets, companiesmustlookforadditionalsolutions.

What’s needed is a way to serve customers efficiently and cost-effec-tively, without incurring huge capital expenses or carrying excess inventory and the solution will have to be flexi-ble and adaptable as the market and your business grows, contracts and changes direction.

Can you afford 35 Distribution Centers?

Amazon’s sprawling fulfillment cen-ternetworkallowsnextdaygroundshipping to 91% of the US popula-tion2.Toprovidethatsame levelofservicewould require a network ofmore than 35 DCs, which is simplyoutofreachformanyretailers.

Could Pop-Up DCs be the Future of Retail Distribution?

Now there is a new alternative to consider. In addition to yourcentralised DCs, 3PLs and stores forfulfillment, what if you could pop-upasmalldistributionoperation locatedcloser to customers than you haveeverbeen?These“pop-upDCs”couldbe designed with the efficiency of aDC but without the need for a largecapitalinvestmentorlongleadtimetoimplement.Youcouldpotentiallyadd5or6pop-upDCstoyournetworkforlessthanthecostofanewDCandinafractionofthetime.Thisnewkindofadaptivenetworkmightallowyouto:

There are three trends that are coming together to make this possible.

The Digital EffectDespite recent improvements, the sluggish South African economy continues to concern local companies. Added to this a plethora of disruptive inventions have challenged almost every industry’s traditional business models. Companies are constantly looking over their shoulders for the next Tesla, Uber, Netflix, Google, or Airbnb - living in fear of becoming the next case study about a long forgotten business that neglected the digital transformation imperative.
