‘Homey’Written and directed by Ben Garfield

AudienceThe game ‘Homey’ or otherwise known as ‘Bulldog’ has been around for a very long time, therefore this does not just target a younger generation but also older ones who would remember playing this game as a child. However a younger audience would not understand the true underlying meaning of the film and so this is a big reason why I do not believe it is targeted towards a target under the age of 16.

It will target both a middle class and a working class audience due to both demographics being familiar with the game and the fact that to access the short there is no need to pay for it.

However, after saying a younger generation is not targeted they are the audience who are most able to access this short due to it’s distribution factors.

This film has been distributed on the internet through ‘Virgin Media Shorts’ which is where i found it. Because the age that our younger generation is growing up in is called the ‘Digital Age’ we can assume that they/us are possibly more in tune with the internet than older generations are. If my grandad (who is 74) wanted to watch a film, he would go to the cinema. There would be not even a remote idea that you could access them online. This would show that maybe a younger audience could be targeted aswell as an older one.

Media Language Mise en Scene Body language/Facial expressions: Because there is no dialogue or narration body language and facial expressions tell us

what is happening. This is shown through lots of close ups to emphasize and enhance all of the characters expressions.Lighting/Colour: The first shot in this short is of the sky which looks grey and cloudy. This, alongside the soundbridge creates an initial atmosphere. This atmosphere certainly isn’t a jolly and creates a mood full of tension and suspense. This is partially created through the weather, but also lighting and colour grading. Also the fact that this shot shows a weather vane shows that this shot is intended to portray the grim weather to the audience.Costume: This was very easy for the director because he used “Over 100 of the school’s pupils as [his] actors”. Because of this they already had the desired cloths.Setting: This short film was set and filmed at “Grafton Primary School in Holloway” which is obviously the perect location for this short film because it is a true-to-life environment.

Editing Pace is a very important factor in this film. It starts off with very slow cuts which consist of some slow motion shots. It then builds up the pace of each shot as one of the main characters school mates gets caught and he begins to run. This sense of pace conveys the tension that builds up in this short to the point where he runs and we are hoping he does not get caught. Then, just like the camera shots and sound, we see a circular flow in the way that the slow pace is restored and the tension leaves due to us knowing that he is safe

Sound There is a soundbridge throughout which builds up suspense at a constant rate. There is also a circular flow in the terms of sound because there are nursery rhymes heard at the beginning and at the end after the main character had achieved his goal. This shows that the game was so important to him that everything else was almost blocked out but we don’t realise it untill we are reminded at the end. We are also constantly reminded that we are in a playground due to the diegetic on screen screams and laughter of the children.

Camera There is also a circular flow in the camera work. We start with a close up of the main character's hand from the outside of the fence but then end with the same shot but on the other side of the playground on the other side of the fence. This really feels as if we’ve experienced a journey with the character. There are also lots of other close ups in this short in which we are told the story through emotions via the main character's face and body due to the fact that there is no dialogue or narration.

Representation

This film represents children as having ignorant view of the world, a lack of responsibility and maturity because this is their main concern of the day. so much tension is built around something with no importance or relevance to real world issues, but it means a lot to them

How this has helped me● A short film doesn't have to have an intricate, detailed story line● I should work with pace more to create tension ● Circular flows in camera work, sound and story lines feel as if you

are taken on a journey● Establishing shots ● Use actual settings rather than trying to recreating them because

the real setting will always be more believable● Distribute
