Isaiah’s Commission Text: Isaiah 6:1-13, 1. In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the sovereign master seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple. 2. Seraphs stood over him; each one had six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and they used the remaining two to fly. 3. They called out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord who commands armies! His majestic splendor fills the entire earth!” 4. The sound of their voices shook the door frames, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5. I said, “Too bad for me! I am destroyed, for my lips are contaminated by sin, and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. My eyes have seen the king, the Lord who commands armies.” 6. But then one of the seraphs flew toward me. In his hand was a hot coal he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7. He touched my mouth with it and said, “Look, this coal has touched your lips. Your evil is removed; your sin is forgiven.” 8. I heard the voice of the sovereign master say, “Whom will I send? Who will go on our behalf?” I answered, “Here I am, send me!”

Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind! Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.” 11. I replied, “How long, sovereign master?” He said, “Until cities are in ruins and unpopulated, and houses are uninhabited, and the land is ruined and devastated, 12. and the Lord has sent the people off to a distant place, and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned. 13. Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land, it will again be destroyed, like one of the large sacred trees or an Asherah pole, when a sacred pillar on a high place is thrown down. That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family.” (NET) Introduction: I. Hamilton wrote that Isaiah 6:1 - 9:7 forms a subsection which begins with a theophany and ends with visions of a deliverer.

A. In between the beginning and end, stories and oracles of conflict and salvation appear.

B. Hamilton defined theophany as the appearance of a divine being to a human.

II. Hailey noted that Isaiah 6 falls into three divisions; i.e., . . .

A. Isaiah’s vision of the mighty Jehovah (verses 1-5), . . .

B. Isaiah’s consecration to his mission (verses 6-7), and . . .

C. Isaiah’s commission from Jehovah (verses 8-13). III. Smith wrote that Isaiah’s vision has three components; i.e., . . .

A. A vision of God (verses 1-4), . . .

B. A vision of self (verses 5-7), and . . .

C. A vision of service (verses 8-13. IV. Isaiah chapters 1-5 have given a general summary of the spiritual conditions in Judah at the time of Isaiah’s call to the prophetic ministry detailed in chapter 6. (Briley)

A. Isaiah was cleansed and enrolled in divine service.

B. There was hope for some in Judah to be spared although great difficulties on the journey awaited them and most would die in rebellion against God.

V. Lowth via Coffman wrote, “Although it (Isaiah 6) relates primarily to the prophet’s own times, . . . it extends . . . to the age of the Messiah, and the blindness of the Jews to the gospel, to the desolation of their country by the Romans, and to their being rejected (as God’s chosen people) by God.”

A. Matthew 13:14-15, And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘You will listen carefully yet will never understand, you will look closely yet will never comprehend. For the heart of this people has become dull; they are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ (NET)

B. John 12:40, “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them.” (NET)

C. Acts 28:26-27, when he said, ‘Go to this people and say, “You will keep on hearing, but will never understand, and you will keep on looking, but will never perceive. For the heart of this people has become dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”’ (NET)

D. Romans 11:7-8, What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was diligently seeking, but the elect obtained it. The rest were hardened, as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, to this very day.” (NET)

www.biblestudyworkshop.org 6 Commentary and Questions by John C. Sewell VI. Coffman concurs that Isaiah 6 falls into three short divisions; viz., . . .

A. The vision of God (verses 1-5), . . .

B. Isaiah’s cleansing (verses 6-8), and . . .

C. Isaiah’s prophecy of Israel’s hardening and rejection (verses 9-13).

VII. Clarke wrote, “As this vision seems to contain a solemn designation of Isaiah to the prophetic office, it is by most interpreters thought to be the first in order of his prophecies.

A. But this perhaps may not be so; for Isaiah is said, in the title of his prophecies, to have prophesied in the time of Uzziah, whose acts, first and last, he wrote, which is usually done by a contemporary prophet; and the phrase, in the year that Uzziah died, probably means after the death of Uzziah; as the same phrase means after the death of Ahaz.”

1. 2 Chronicles 26:22, The rest of the events of Uzziah’s reign, from start to finish, were recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. (NET)

2. Isaiah 14:28, In the year King Ahaz died, this message was revealed: (NET)

B. Clarke noted that other chapters in the book of Isaiah are not in chronological order, that chapters 2-5 seem to be antecedent to chapter 1.

www.biblestudyworkshop.org 7 Commentary and Questions by John C. Sewell VIII. The Pulpit Commentary states that this was not the original call of Isaiah to the prophetic ministry which call ordinarily came at the beginning of the book.

A. Jeremiah 1:10, Know for certain that I hereby give you the authority to announce to nations and kingdoms that they will be uprooted and torn down, destroyed and demolished, rebuilt and firmly planted.” (NET)

B. Ezekiel 1:1, In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles at the Kebar River, the heavens opened and I saw a divine vision. (NET)

IX. Note the similarities between the call of Isaiah here and of Jeremiah. (See The Pulpit Commentary.)

A. Jeremiah 1:4-19, The Lord said to me, “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.” I answered, “Oh, Lord God, I really do not know how to speak well enough for that, for I am too young.” The Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ But go to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you. Do not be afraid of those to whom I send you, for I will be with you to protect you,” says the Lord. Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me. Know for certain that I hereby give you the authority to announce to

nations and kingdoms that they will be uprooted and torn down, destroyed and demolished, rebuilt and firmly planted.” Later the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” I answered, “I see a branch of an almond tree.” Then the Lord said, “You have observed correctly. This means I am watching to make sure my threats are carried out.” The Lord again asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a pot of boiling water; it is tipped toward us from the north.” Then the Lord said, “This means destruction will break out from the north on all who live in the land. For I will soon summon all the peoples of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord. “They will come and their kings will set up their thrones near the entrances of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all the walls surrounding it, and all the towns in Judah. In this way I will pass sentence on the people of Jerusalem and Judah because of all their wickedness. For they rejected me and offered sacrifices to other gods, worshiping what they made with their own hands.” “But you, Jeremiah, get yourself ready! Go and tell these people everything I instruct you to say. Do not be terrified of them, or I will give you good reason to be terrified of them. I, the Lord, hereby promise to make you as strong as a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall. You will be able to stand up against all who live in the land, including the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and all the people of the land. They will attack you but they will not be able to overcome you, for I will be with you to rescue you,” says the Lord. (NET)

www.biblestudyworkshop.org 9 Commentary and Questions by John C. Sewell Commentary:

Isaiah’s Vision of the Lord Isaiah 6:1, In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the sovereign master seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple. (NET) I. In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the sovereign master* seated on a high, elevated throne.

A. NET Footnote: Hebrew – Adonay (also in verses 8, 11 and 7:7, 14, 19).

1. Isaiah 7:7, 14, 19, For this reason the sovereign master, the Lord, says: “It will not take place; it will not happen. For this reason the sovereign master himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel. All of them will come and make their home in the ravines between the cliffs, and in the crevices of the cliffs, in all the thorn bushes, and in all the watering holes. (NET)

2. Adonay means “the sovereign one” (Smith), one to be greatly reverenced.

B. The Israelites believed that literally seeing God would lead to death. (See Hamilton.)

1. This appearance was in a vision which did not result in death.

2. Moses saw God’s shadow which did not result in death.

3. Exodus 33:20, But he added, “You cannot see my face, for no one can see me and live.” (NET)

C. This passage marks the beginning of Isaiah’s prophetic ministry. (Hamilton)

1. Hailey observed that there is no clear explanation as to why Isaiah’s call to the prophetic ministry appears here as chapter 6 instead of at the beginning of the book.

2. Coffman, however, wrote, “Therefore, we under-stand this great chapter as a second appearance of the Lord to Isaiah, much in the same manner that God appeared to Abraham a second time in Haran, to Jonah a second time, and to Daniel a number of times.”

D. Yahweh’s glory is in this passage sharply contrasted with the frailty of King Uzziah who had just died. (See Hamilton.)

1. Psalm 99:3, 5, 9, Let them praise your great and awesome name! He is holy! Praise the Lord our God! Worship before his footstool! He is holy! Praise the Lord our God! Worship on his holy hill, for the Lord our God is holy! (NET)

2. Revelation 4:8-11, Each one of the four living creatures had six wings and was full of eyes all around and inside. They never rest day or night, saying: “Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God, the All-Powerful, Who was and who is, and who is still to come!” And whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders throw themselves to the ground before the one who sits on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever, and they offer their crowns before his throne, saying: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, since you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created!” (NET)

3. The Pulpit Commentary states it is not definite whether this vision was seen before or after Uzziah died.

E. The year King Uzziah died is variously dated to 748-734 B.C., 740-739 B.C. being the date most often accepted. (Hailey)

1. Hailey further wrote that Uzziah was a great king whose reign had been characterized by prosperity.

a. However, the time Uzziah was king, the nation was also characterized by sin.

b. Uzziah, after he became powerful, became proud which led to his downfall, his being struck with leprosy and his relinquishing the throne to his son Jotham. (See Briley.)

2. Although three other good kings, Jotham, Hezekiah and Josiah, reigned in subsequent years, overall the nation was in decline in years following Uzziah’s reign. Judah’s glory days were gone! (See Hailey.)

3. “It was in the crucial year of King Uzziah’s death that Jehovah called Isaiah to the prophetic ministry. (See Hailey.)

4. 2 Chronicles 26:1-23, All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in his father Amaziah’s place. Uzziah built up Elat and restored it to Judah after King Amaziah had passed away. Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jecholiah, who was from Jerusalem. He did what the Lord approved, just as his father Amaziah had done. He followed God during the lifetime of Zechariah, who taught him how to honor God. As long as he followed the Lord, God caused him to succeed. Uzziah attacked the Philistines and broke down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod. He built cities in the region of Ashdod and throughout Philistine territory. God helped him in his campaigns against the Philistines, the Arabs

living in Gur Baal, and the Meunites. The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah and his fame reached the border of Egypt, for he grew in power. Uzziah built and fortified towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, Valley Gate, and at the Angle. He built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns, for he owned many herds in the lowlands and on the plain. He had workers in the fields and vineyards in the hills and in Carmel, for he loved agriculture. Uzziah had an army of skilled warriors trained for battle. They were organized by divisions according to the muster rolls made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer under the authority of Hananiah, a royal official. The total number of family leaders who led warriors was 2,600. They commanded an army of 307,500 skilled and able warriors who were ready to defend the king against his enemies. Uzziah supplied shields, spears, helmets, breastplates, bows, and slingstones for the entire army. In Jerusalem he made war machines carefully designed to shoot arrows and large stones from the towers and corners of the walls. He became very famous, for he received tremendous support and became powerful. But once he became powerful, his pride destroyed him. He disobeyed the Lord his God. He entered the Lord’s temple to offer incense on the incense altar. Azariah the priest and eighty other brave priests of the Lord followed him in. They confronted King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not proper for you, Uzziah,

to offer incense to the Lord. That is the responsibility of the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to offer incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have disobeyed and the Lord God will not honor you!” Uzziah, who had an incense censer in his hand, became angry. While he was ranting and raving at the priests, a skin disease appeared on his forehead right there in front of the priests in the Lord’s temple near the incense altar. When Azariah the high priest and the other priests looked at him, there was a skin disease on his forehead. They hurried him out of there; even the king himself wanted to leave quickly because the Lord had afflicted him. King Uzziah suffered from a skin disease until the day he died. He lived in separate quarters, afflicted by a skin disease and banned from the Lord’s temple. His son Jotham was in charge of the palace and ruled over the people of the land. The rest of the events of Uzziah’s reign, from start to finish, were recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. Uzziah passed away and was buried near his ancestors in a cemetery belonging to the kings. (This was because he had a skin disease.) His son Jotham replaced him as king. (NET)
