Dr. B arry B ates ( University o f O regon) r eceived the Geoffrey Dyson Award. The Dyson is the highest award g iven by the I nternational Society of Biomechanics in Sports and recognizes sport scientists who, throughout t heir professional careers, bridge the gap between biomechanics research and practice in sport. Dr. Bates presented a l ecture en titled “Accommodating S trategies f or Preventing Chronic Lower Extremity Injuries.”

At t he c losing ba nquet it w as a nnounced that Professor Youlian Hong (Chinese U niversity of Hong K ong) will be receiving the aw ard at the 2011 ISBS conference in P orto Portugal. The Awards C ommittee welcomes your nom inations for this prestigious award.

ISBS Sponsors

ISBS would like to thank our commercial partners who provide sponsorship for the society. At press time the following have renewed contracts as sponsors of ISBS: Contemplas and Simi Motion.

Remember to consider these fine vendors of sports biomechanics research equipment and software when updating your lab. Contact Dr. Woflgang Potthast VP of Public Relations for more information about ISBS sponsorship.

Secretary General ReportThe y ear 2009-10 was a busy year. Along with writing and responding to the usual email t raffic, several issues w ere p resented t hat r equired investigation into past records and written reports. The ISBS Election 2010 was a main focus of the year. A n on -line su rvey sy stem, S urveyGizmo, was adapted to handle the election. Although the program ha s a p ronounced l earning c urve, t he results were satisfying. A N ominating Committee w as a ppointed a nd included: John Ostarello, Secretary General – U.S.A. Youlian Hong, Past President- China Ross Anderson, Member - Ireland Hae-Dong Lee, Member – South Korea The Committee s olicited nominations for the various O fficer po sitions a nd t he B oard o f Directors. The C ommittee w as ab le to recruit two c andidates f or two o f f our O fficer pos itions and 12 candidates t o v ie f or t he 10 B oard of Directors positions. As a result, the election was more competitive than it has been in the past. The election process had some problems, although they w ere r elatively sm all i n n umber. A f ew members di d not r eceive a n i nvitation t o v ote

because t heir dues were not current. Others did not r eceive an i nvitation b ecause their em ail addresses w ere n ot updated and still others had their invitations filtered b y th eir in stitution’s firewall. The Treasurer, M anfred Vieten, a nd I w orked as efficiently as possible to ad dress l ast m inute attempts by members to pay the current dues and thus b e eligible to v ote. Although these problems required extra effort, it is a tribute to the Society t hat m embers w ere i nterested en ough t o make an effort to be in good standing so that they could participate in the election. I in vestigated t he p roblem o f f iltering by th e various i nstitutions a nd t here doe s not a ppear t o be anything that ISBS can do. Institutions have an a rray o f policies so i t is i n the h ands o f each member to assure that their ISBS communications are not filtered. The number of responses and the response rate for the 201 0 e lection w as g reater t han a ny pr evious election i n I SBS hi story. T he r esults a re summarized below: 263 invitations to vote were sent to members. 103 members returned completed ballots 39% - the response rate.

Pre- and Post-Conference Meeting Summary This c olumn pr esents concise highlights of t he reports and decisions of the ISBS Officers at t he Pre- and Post-Conference Meetings in Marquette, Michigan. Official minutes are available from the Secretary-General John Ostarello. •Jing Li reported that a survey of the membership was ov erwhelming i n favor of r etaining t he current ISBS l ogo ( 51 o f 71 r esponses) over seeking new designs. •Manfred Vieten r eported on the strong status of the f inances of t he s ociety, w ith r evenue o f approximately 19 t housand Euro, e xpenses of 8 thousand Euro, and savings of 76 t housand Euro. The O fficers d iscussed c ontinued expansion of support f or student travel a nd p articipation a t ISBS conferences with society funds. This year 6 students received ISBS travel grant funds from 27 applications.

•Young-Hoo K won r eported on s ubstantial increases in t he impact factor and t he number of submissions for the journal Sports Biomechanics. The 2009 acceptance rate for the journal was 33% and h e r ecommended t hat an a ssociate ed itor structure be adopted to handle the larger numbers of p apers being s ubmitted. The of ficers v oted t o support this request a nd c harged the V P o f Publications to get a committee together to select three associate editors for the journal. •The officers voted to accept an offer to index and link t o ou r I SBS pr oceedings archive from EBSCO publ ishing. T he i ndexing a nd l inking provides greater exposure to proceedings papers and s hould p rovide some l imited royalties f rom some EBSCO client usage. •The of ficers voted to extend offers to host upcoming ISBS conferences t o two ex cellent proposals: Melbourne in 2012 and Taipei in 2013.
