Late Dr. S. R. Chandra-sekhar, an eminent ENT specialist with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore (East) founded the

institute in Feb. 1977 and in his honour the institute was named as Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech & Hearing. On 30th January 2013 the Institute completed thirty six years of its active and useful existence. The institute is governed by The Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust. The institute functions as a non-commercial, non-profit, non-government voluntary organization. Initially it was planned to provide clinical services of Diagnosis Assessment and Therapeutic Rehabilitation for persons with speech, Language, Hearing & Communication Disorders/problems. Now, it has grown into a vast organization with multi-level multifaceted activities and has earned a reputation as a premier institution of its kind in the country. The institute caters to multifaceted requirements of Persons with Speech and Hearing disabilities from not only Bangalore and Karnataka but acts as a nodal agency & referral resource center for whole of India.

The following are the main objectives of Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing:1. To evaluate, diagnose, and rehabilitate persons

with Speech Language and Hearing Disorders.2. To create community awareness & educate the

public on Speech Language and hearing problems and on the need for early professional intervention for better rehabilitation.

3. To assist voluntary organizations to conduct Speech Language, and hearing camps.

4. To promote education of individuals with hearing impairments, Speech-Language Impairments, other Communication, Behavioural and Learning Impairments.

5. To undertake manpower development in the field of speech language and hearing

6. To undertake research on all related aspects.

The institute began as a single floor facility with 14 staff of which 9 were clinical staff with only 3 high quality sound treated rooms and many clinical audiometers. However, within five years it has to be upgraded to a two floor structure to provide enough space to added activities. In 1990 the building to house Sunaad Kannada School for the Hearing

Impaired was constructed, the year 1994 saw the construction of the third floor which housed the academic activities along with high end rooms for therapy. More laboratories were added in 2003 to take up advanced assessment and therapy & related research in the areas of Speech Sciences, Acoustics, Hearing Sciences- electrophysiological test facility, Noise measurement, Calibration and Language transcription works etc. The school also had to be expanded to accommodate more classes for higher standards. With Upward inclusion of courses at PG levels the need for our own hostel building to accommodate out of station students was greatly felt and separate hostel buildings for girls and boys were constructed. Further, keeping with expanded activities & increase in patient load and also student intake at various courses a canteen floor became necessary and was built. Presently, the Institute employs more than 110 persons including academic faculty, clinical, technical, and administrative and other supportive staff.

From the early years itself the Institute offered high quality clinical services with state of the art equipment, instruments and trained professionals which have been constantly upgraded from time to time to meet the higher standards. This has resulted in large number of referrals from ENT surgeons, Pediatricians, Psychologists and teachers. The Institute has received support from time to time from Government of India and Government of Karnataka, Lions Club International Fund, Rotary International, Infosys Foundation, Smt. K.S. Brahamaramba & Dr. K.S. Sriram Endowment and Philanthropists like Latter Day Saints, Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) and public for various purposes like the purchase of Hearing Aids for the poor clients, equipment for testing, instruments for assessment and therapy, for construction of buildings, strengthening of Library and research works. Recently the institute was able to attract M P LAD fund from Sri P.C. Mohan for construction and expansion of the building.

The changes that were seen in educational aspects of hearing impaired over time had its effect on the institute also and with it came the impetus to start the integrated education of the children with HI by starting of the integrated school for the Deaf in collaboration with R.V. with Cleft Lip and Palate with Mahavir Jain Hospital & Smile Train International and also with Spastic Society of Karnataka. The Institute has now grown as a multilevel training provider conducting D.Ed.SE (HI), BSLPA, MASLP, M.Sc. (SLP), M.Sc. (Aud) and Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing courses under recognition of the RCI (A statutory authority established by Parliamentary Act, Government of India, to regulate courses dealing with rehabilitation of persons with disabilities) and affiliation to Bangalore University. In order to meet the academic requirements as per Bangalore University and RCI, institute has embarked on building additional floor of classrooms, faculty rooms, PhD scholar rooms, and recreational facility for students.

The acorn planted in 1977 has now grown into robust Oak with a high reputation in the field. The task of maintaining the range of services at the same high professional level and embarking on new avenues is a continuous and very hard task requiring new skills and initiatives. For maintaining its quality, the Institute encourages the acquisition of new skills by the staff through refresher courses, seminars and conferences conducted by the institute from time to time or by others. This commitment to quality has led to recognition of institute’s reports by government agencies as for example in the court and Common Entrance tests etc. Institute always tries to be the bench mark for others in terms of quality.

In our forward march, there were several individuals who whole heartedly came forward to accompany us and give shoulder to support us in our thick and thin. I am grateful to all of them for their support.

funded by Government of India, with 100 children recruited for home based therapy as a course, of them 5 received complete follow up and stayed in touch with institute even beyond project period and 2 of them obtained graduation and were employed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. This was followed up by starting a preschool for children with hearing impairment in 1987 and school for the hearing impaired in 1988. Encouraged by our earlier experience institute started a unique program to train the Mothers of hearing impaired children as intermediaries for therapy and intervention through our Mothers Training Centre started in 2008. The institute was the earliest center for starting Auditory Verbal Therapy program for cochlear implantees, the first in Bangalore and the 2nd in the state. Further our institute is the only center in the state to offer a Sign language course by starting a separate cell for sign language. With this we are able to provide training on sign language to parents, siblings, peers and significant others of persons with deafness. Judiciary and police frequently use the sign language interpreter services from the institute.

Although the early focus was on hearing loss, the institute has expanded its expertise to offer specialized services to children with specific language impairment, autism spectrum disorders, cleft Lip and palate and for persons with neurogenic Speech and Language disorders, voice disorders and laryngectomy. Institute has experts working on swallowing problems (Dysphagia) and has entered in to agreement to provide collaborative service with as many as 24 institutions in & around Bangalore, that are hospitals, voluntary organizations, Schools, Clinics etc. The institute has also actively participated in National projects like NPPCD (National Program on Prevention and control of Deafness) a GOI initiative and, Smile train project for individuals

The Institute building 1977


It was in the seventies that I first met Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar. We were at the All India Institute Speech and Hearing of Mysore. We had been conducting many Speech

and Hearing Camps all over South India with the sponsorship of service organisations such as the Lions, the Rotary and others.

The clubs would announce our dates and many people with speech and hearing problems would come early and wait to be examined and to receive advice regarding the possibility or feasibility of medical intervention or the alternative rehabilitative steps to be followed. Some needy people were given free hearing aids and appropriate counseling. The clients would have a variety of speech and hearing problems and they would belong to a variety of social backgrounds.

The Bangalore East Lions Club sponsored one such camp in the seventies. Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar , the then well known ENT specialist had orgasnised the Camp and he looked after our welfare. He was courtesy and efficiency personified! We were very gratified with the success of the camp as it was attended by a horde of clients with a wide variety of disorders.

Dr. SRC was astounded to see that so many people needed and sought services beyond what he could deliver in his hospital and clinic! He was moved at the plight of so many poor people and he was touched by the possibilities of help that were available.

He decided then and there that he should move beyond the hospital and clinic and do something to provide the much needed speech and hearing rehabilitative services. Thus was born the Bangalore East Lions Institution of Speech and Hearing!

DR. SRC had a very soft heart which would go out and respond to the needs of the poor and needy. SRC started planning in right earnest to pursue his idea. He convinced his Club to sponsor and establish a service centre for speech and hearing services. He took the help of an architect to draw up plans.

He assembled a few of us to plan the centre. He suggested that the name should be Bangalore East Lion’s Institute of Speech and Hearing. I indicated that he was only starting a Clinic and the word Institute seemed inappropriate and perhaps a Speech and Hearing Centre would be more suitable. He thought for a while and then insisted on the Institute! Well,

S.r.C. - a Few Vignettesover time he had proved me wrong; he built up a great Institute which is today offering a variety of training programmes, perhaps more than any other Institute.

Dr. SRC had a vision and the guts and drive to pursue his grand vision !

Four of our very good alumni from the Mysore Institute joined the Bangalore Institute as Therapists. They felt disturbed because they felt they were being treated as Technicians and mentioned it to me. I spoke to Dr. SRC about this. He changed and went overboard and started treating them as senior professionals and with undue respect. Dr. SRC was childlike in his responses and in his willingness to change!

Once when I visited the Institute, he offered to drive me back home to my daughter’s residence. On the way he said he had to make a stop and we landed in a government office. There, with me in tow, he shuttled from table to table of petty clerks cajoling them and persuading them to release the funds for the Institute. I remembered that I had accompanied him to meet the Chief Minister on a similar errand. Dr. SRC spared no effort to raise funds for the Institute and he was willing to meet the high and mighty or the petty officers and individuals without any hesitation. He approached all and sundry begging and raising funds for his baby, the Institute.

On another occasion, I attended another programme as a guest. Dr. SRC was there and I was quite moved to see that his health was failing him and he had contacted Parkinsonism. I had so often seen him hale and hearty and full of life and verve that seeing him so frail disturbed me. However, a pleasant surprise awaited me! Dr. SRC stood up with support and read out falteringly a message for the occasion! Dr. SRC so loved his Institution that he braved all odds to express his dedication to the task at hand.

I am amazed at how well the Institute has grown. I do not know how many Institutions receive grants from a variety of service organisations, the government and individuals of all kinds. Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar was a visionary who perused his heart’s desire with fervor and has bequeathed to posterity a great Institution.

It is very distressing and painful to realize that Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar, our founder president and patron in chief is no longer with us now. Though he was not able to actively

participate in day to day affairs of the institute for quite some time due to his ill health, his mere physical presence through his weekly visits for therapy could make us the feel that he is with us in all our activities & in minds of all employees. A few of us had many opportunities to interact closely with him & to see an enormous force in him to change/ mould our thinking for bring a positive change to shape us suit the institute functions. He was a great visionary and hard task master. He developed the institute single mindedly from a level of service provider to a leading academic institute.

I came in contact with him, when I was posted by Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for Hearing Handicapped, Mumbai (AYJNIHH) during 1987 as Deputy Director (Technical) & chief controller of examination, to inspect the then Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore, for recognizing it as one of the centre to conduct D.Ed. (HI) programme under Central Examination Scheme. Thereafter, I had to visit the Institute for different purposes on several occasions as inspector of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) as external examiner and also to conduct workshop on Sign Language etc. After many such visits and when our contact was well established, Dr. Chandrasekhar told me that he would prefer me to come as a friend of the Institute and help in professional building rather than as an Inspector. He was quick to remind me also that he was then one of the members on Executive Council of AYJNIHH, Mumbai. From late 80s he was observing me as a professional visiting institute to conduct examinations, inspection and as resource persons etc. In one such time when institute felt short of well qualified and experienced professional due to resignations of several staff at a time, he approached me to join the Institute. Since at that time, still I had hopes & chances of heading the AYJNIHH as Director, I expressed my inability to honour his request. However, very soon I was entangled with many problems with the outgoing authority of AYJNIHH Institute because of which I had to miss the bus to become the Director. When he learnt, that I was planning to take voluntary

Chandrasekhar retirement and returning to Bangalore, he telephoned me & offered the post of professor in Audiology and asked me to join the institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore with in January, 2003 so as to complete the academic portions of the courses at the institute well with in university deadline dates as per academic calendar. His calling me and offering the post of Honorary Professor at the institute amply exemplified his magnanimity & ability to recognize academic worth of an individual as professional and attracting him to join the institute to meet its immediate and long term requirements. The offer though was monetarily not any attractive, I accepted it because of the reputation of the institute and for the opportunity that I got to return to my home state & to serve our people in Karnataka. Dr SRC, when convinced that institute will get strengthened by the abilities and professionalism of any individual will go all way to woo him/her to join the institute to strengthen the institute activities. Thus, we had on many occasions when staff having more than required Skill to perform duties have been recruited but with no proper educational qualifications to meet University/ board norms for the posts. Later Dr SRC will encourage them to complete minimum required qualifications while in service through distance mode courses. He was very clear of the Institute objective and goals. He had very large and kind Heart. His broad insight & vision of the Institute made several staff to stay on their posts year after year. He was a benevolent person and was keen to help to extant possible the employees. When he found that group D employees of the institute suffer a great ordeal to get resources to put their children in schools during June/ July when they have to pay substantial amount as lump sum fees, He made provision to offer 2 months salary in advance as interest free loan that become recoverable in ten monthly installments from their future payments of salary. Such facility to employees is not available in government sector itself, where as an NGO he could make provisions for it.

When I joined in 2003 as Professor, I had to interact with him day in day out on several professional matters. Due to our varied professional background, we had lots of professional and academic differences. Thus many a times the situation will turn as blow hot & blow cold. Further, because of my prior working back ground with many government institutes, Dr. SRC would suspect that I am making wild professional demands and suggestions with out financial concerns

which were not really true. In spite of many differences and arguments on many issues, he will never allow any issue to reach personal levels. Therefore, not only I could fight for changes to be made in course curriculum, infrastructure, raise in pay of staff, teaching methods, monitoring of training courses but also could personally raise from the level of professor to Principal, then to Joint Director and finally as Director of the Institute all within a short span of 13 months. This amply proved that my fights with him to find resources to make needed development changes did not affect his mind to come in the way to promote me to responsible positions.

Initially for first two years 2004-05 & 06 as Director of the institute, I had many tiffs with him at every stage of bringing changes that were badly needed as modifications to existing building to create additional academic & clinical space and facilities - in terms of infrastructure that are required as per University and RCI guidelines for the academic courses. Institute has very restricted space which was also not used judiciously as many functions as possible within available building. It was hard to sell the concept that rooms and separate enclosures are to be provided to activities and not the staff per say etc, thus large rooms occupied till then by individual staff had to be withdrawn and modified as smaller cubicles and enclosures as required by activities and functions. This had to be modified by calling several persons heart burns. Therefore, using available space and financial resources as judiciously as possible became the true concern. While working on requirements of clinics, Laboratory Hostel etc many a times the existing walls had to be broken dismantled etc, open covered sheds had to be converted into sound proof rooms. He was very much concerned on cost involved for the same & will strive very hard to know and in finding out by verifying with others whether what has been proposed by me was truly required or not. Therefore, he will call for and get advice on my proposals from many experts who were my seniors, contemporaries or at times could even be professional rivals. He always demanded to know the cost of work involved, sources of income, stability of building after changes etc. before approving a proposal. Even in spite of his initial reservations and doubts he ultimately allowed and found resources to bring in improvement in building when convinced. He allowed building afresh after complete demolition of existed structure and to build afresh an Auditory Verbal Therapy lab with 4 sound proof enclosures, 2 sound proof hearing and speech science labs with three inner sound proof lab enclosures in each, 20 therapy cubicles and remodeling of then existed 4 double room audiometric set ups with 3 more newly

built. All these were to be created by demolishing and remodeling existing walls & space etc. Every time a wall was demolished / broken he would say that I am beating on his heart & getting it broken and finally would agree & allow making the required changes. He was very much flexible and open to positive changes because of which institute continually improved.

This was more true even while making changes in scale of pay, rules pertaining to leave, professional matters etc issues. He used to be skeptical at the beginning to go with the proposal and once he sees the academic/clinical importance and benefits of proposed changes, he would encourage and also come forward to find finance & support it. When the proposal for construction of hostel was put up, I had move earth and heaven to convince him that unless own hostel facility is provided at the institute premises itself the existed courses may get closed for want of candidates to join them. He saw with me the importance of filling up of all seats becoming crucial in terms revenue generation as well as manpower generation. Most students to our courses even today are non local residents and girls. Thus with out our own hostels it was impossible to convince parents to make their daughters join the course. After he got convinced of the same, he not only agreed but found sponsors to take care of construction cost. Thus in over three years two hostel buildings were built.

Similarly, convincing on need to conduct programmes like seminars, conferences, workshops with professional drawn from other Institutes as a part of academic pursuits resulting in projecting institute image and help in marketing services and courses at the institute was also a struggle won with lot of efforts. With his blessings now, the image of the Institute and academic standards rose with these changes for which his support was immense. He always appreciated employees when ever any successful event was carried out and made it a point to call for a post event meeting to thank all staff who worked hard to make the event successful. He was keen on image building of the Institute. He helped us bring fund through advertisement, through sponsorship & funding agencies by using his personal contacts.

With his demise, we feel the orphaned and the absence of his professional and academic support and encouragements to which we were so much used to and had taken it for granted. I on behalf of all staff and students pray in god for his soul to rest in peace.

My nostalgia with Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar goes back to more than 3 decades when I had met him with my uncle Lion. Late N.K. Vishwanth who is also a founder Trustee of our Institute.

In late eighties when I was inducted into Lionism, I started interacting with many senior lions and I used to admire Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar’s command over English and his sense of dressing.

I would like to mention one incident which encouraged me a lot in LIFE. In one of our Lions Club meeting, I was asked to give a speech on stage. Soon after the programme was over, Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar came and chided me with a strong voice ‘shanth you could have performed much better if you would have practiced well” - Even today this rings in my mind and shows how doctor was a hard task master and a strict disciplinarian.

I was the conduit between the Lions Club of Bangalore East and the Institute, whenever there was a difference of opinion, that is when I became very close to Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar and the Institute. Even though the Lions Club of Bangalore East was instrumental in starting this Institute, it was only Dr.

Nostalgia with Dr. S.r. ChandrasekharS. R. Chandrasekhar who had devoted his entire life and built this institute brick by brick. But for him the Institute would not have existed.

I thank Lions Club of Bangalore East/lion movements for creating such gem of leaders. Only those who were closely associated with him know the trials and tribulations he experienced. But whatever difficult days he underwent, it has resulted in a monumental edifice and the Institute stands testimony for his perseverance, dedication, determination and above all his vision.

As Albert pike said “What we do for ourselves dies with us, What we do for others remains and is immortal” & this is what I call it as a Temple of Service which has received accolades as an institution in National and International levels.

When I agreed to be the Treasurer and Chairman of Finance Committee of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust, Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar took a promise from me that I will look after the Institute finance diligently and also said that he has got immense confidence in me. This incident is still etched in my memory.

He was always telling us that the public are giving their hard earned money, trusting that we will utilize it very judiciously. True to this the Lions International Foundation (LCIF) has given 5 grants till date and

Dr. S.r.C. - “The Great achiever”My memorable association with Dr. S.R.C. started in the year 1974 when I joined ENT Dept. of ST.Martha’s Hospital. I am one among those few to have associated with him for nearly 40yrs. He

was a disciplined professional man and as an ENT Specialist he was known for his brilliant diagnosis and excellent surgical skill. He believed in ethical practice throughout his carrier. I used to accompany him to all the speech and hearing camps. He used to like me very much.

Dr. S.R.C. and myself attended few speech and hearing camps organized by various organizations during 1975-1976. Then he realized that speech and hearing problem is alarming in our state and he thought about starting a rehabilitation center at Bangalore - Is it not

a great vision! Inspite of many hurdles, he achieved his dream of establishing this institute in the year 1977. His vision and goal to start a speech and hearing rehabilitation center at Bangalore in 1977 is one of the biggest achievements of his life and his contribution to society. I am glad to say that I am associated with this Institute from the very inception. Over the years this Institute has earned a National and International reputation.

He has gifted this great Institute of speech and hearing for rehabilitation of handicapped children of Karnataka. I am sure speech and hearing handicapped children and their parents will be praying for the departed soul to rest in peace.

Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar was an eminent doctor, dedicated to his profession, he was also a visionary, a philanthropist and a humanitarian.

My first opportunity to meet Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar was

when I was inducted into Lionism in 1993. Over the years, my association with the good doctor culminated into a friendship, I will cherish forever. During my initial years as a member of Lions Club of Bangalore East, I was closely associated with the working of the Institute and I learned how the Institute was conceptualized, founded and nurtured by Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar. At one Lions meet, when I casually asked the doctor about the inception of the institute, he explained to me the urgent need for a facility in India to attend to the needs of the speech and hearing impaired. While Institutions for the blind and physically handicapped got Government patronage and support, the needs of speech and hearing impaired, were by and far neglected. He also explained to me how the cerebral development of a child attains the maximum progress, during the initial years, and how early diagnosis and treatment of hearing impaired children, can help them lead a normal life. As members of LCB East , we had the opportunity to visit the Institute and Sunaad school, with faculty members guiding us through all the activities of the Institute and school. Our visits were very insightful and as Lions, it made us very proud to be associated with the Institute, which is undoubtedly, one of a kind in the country. The total dedication and sincerity with which he devoted himself to the Institute, left a lasting impression on my mind and inspired me greatly. His boundless energy, active involvement, and his determination to procure the best for the Institute, whether it was funds, equipment or faculty, never ceased to amaze me.

It was during the Presidentship of LCB East that I became more closely associated with Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar, with his persistant follow up for the funds raised by our

club for the institute and it gave me the opportunity to understand the great work put in by him for the welfare of the institute and a deeper insight into the working of the institute and Sunaad school. Working in close association with him, helped in establishing a bond between LCB East and the Institute, the outcome of which resulted in reaching an understanding, during the following year, to contribute 60% of funds raised by LCB East to the Institute, which is being implemented till date.

To me, he epitomizes Swami Vivekananda’s words. “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

He will always be remembered for his invaluable contribution in making Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing” one of the premier institutes in the country, with state of the art technology. He will be remembered for his gentle demeanour and for the passion, commitment and indomitable spirit, with which he served the Institute. Age was not a deterrent to the progressive realization of a worthy goal envisioned by him.

Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar’s demise is a huge loss, to all of us.

Though our hearts are filled with profound grief and sorrow, let us take solace in the fact that, even in his death, he has left behind a legacy, the value of which is immeasurable. As a tribute to Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar, let us vow to carry on the legacy of the Institute founded by him, with the same ideals, principles, morals and ethics, the good doctor held so close to his heart.

The Institute stands testimony to all that he stood for, so let us strive to take the Institute to greater heights.

Have had the privilege of being associated with Dr S.R. Chandrasekhar for 30 years. Dr. S R. Chandrasekhar received many laurels but these sat lightly on his head. His

bio-data was a one and half page affair which baldly stated the positions he held, one award from the State government and the position he held in the institute. Dr SRC was the first FRCS in Karnataka and worked in Bangalore Medical College, Karnataka Medical College and St. Johns Medical College as HOD and professor. He was one of the 6 founder members to open Republic Nursing Home which was the first in the city to offer hotel like facilities. He was also the first to start an Institute of Speech and Hearing, a deaf school in Kannada medium, begin an integrated school, college of speech and Hearing and promote sign language. He inspired us to initiate mother’s training centre. Dr. Chandrasekhar was extremely determined person. An early evidence of this is the first laryngectomy he carried out. He carried out a number of laryngectomies between 1961-65 was known as “Laryngectomy Chandrasekhar”.

In the seventies and early eighties, relations between ENT doctors and Speech Pathologists/Audiologists were at their lowest. At that time Dr. Chandrasekhar had the reputation of being short tempered and a difficult employer. After I joined I realized that he was not the ogre he was made out to be. First of all I never heard him raise his voice or shout at anybody in all the 30 years. He was nevertheless a hard task master and it was difficult to get praise unless he felt that it was deserved. He was extremely organized and planned all activities to the last detail, involving every body in the process. At the time the Institute was started he was working in St. Johns Medical College Hospital. So running an institute was a difficult task to say the least. But he managed it in different ways. At 10 am. He would call the institute to find who had come/not come. At 5.00 p.m. he would call to see if everyone was still there. He visited the institute on two afternoons a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays. At that time he went around to assure himself that all was in order, and would even put his finger on window sills to check for dust. He was conscious of the appearance we put up.

He promoted interdisciplinary interaction much before its time. I know of places where Audiologists were called BOY or treated as peons. But we in the

institute enjoyed a free atmosphere. He ensured a high ethical standard (never made us give false certificates, stood by staff if they followed rules) and encouraged diagnostic opinions giving us feedback after surgery. In those days the report protocol followed after immittance test was a statement “suggestive of ME pathology”. He called me and said “I know there is middle ear pathology, I need more Information”. After which we learned to write our impression such as ? Ossicular fixation -. AND learned to do otoscopy. We learned to audit our own services every week through a clinical discussion which helped us reduce mistakes. He audited our services periodically through our weekly worksheets asking us to account for poorer case loads and ways to improve services. These he took to heart and supported all our efforts. When funds were low he “touched” everyone for money including his family members. A case in point was the time his brother came to the institute and he insisted that he be charged. Nor were Lions exempted. All who could afford had to pay. In this he did not exempt himself. When he could not drive and used institute transport he paid for it. His integrity was beyond question.

His ability to follow up a good idea was stupendous. Once he was convinced about the idea, he went all out to make sure it was followed through. While many of the ideas were of the staff without his efforts they would not have seen the light of the day. He did not wait- what could be done tomorrow had to be done today. And what could be done today, had to be done now. We have had donations from various people whom he could convince to contribute to a valuable service. He asked us “Do you want this?” and then ensured that we got it. He tapped all sources of financial help government, Clubs like Lions, Freemasons, Trusts – Dorabjee Tata Trust, and other donors through his personal contacts. We realized to what lengths he went to when one of the staff accompanied him to a government office and saw what he had to put up with from some of the clerks to get the promised cheque.

Dr SRC was very concerned about research. Since the initiation of the institute we have had journals and he made it a point to encourage research-by either giving time or more recently even funding some of it. He initiated interaction between ENTs and Speech language pathologists and Audiologists by having AOI meetings in the institute which were fruitful. In this he was far ahead of his time and greatly helped to bring about better cooperation

between professionals. He has a list of many firsts- a cochlear implant clinic for which the Institute took a loan of Rs.4 lakhs in 1997, A Kannada School for the Hearing Impaired, a teachers training program and training of speech and hearing professionals, but he never forgot why he was inspired to start the institute in the first place and used many techniques to get us to start a program where children with hearing loss spoke well. This led to the Mothers Training Centre where he took pleasure in spending time to interact with the children.

It is difficult to realize at what time we all realized his worth. He changed from an employer into a father figure and his honesty was appreciated. He encouraged us to make do with less but provide quality services through example. He was indefatigable and attended along with us every single camp (which were held on Sundays) in addition to his other work.

He was absent from work only when he had a broken foot and a by pass surgery. When I asked him which was the last holiday he took, he couldn’t remember. He had not even visited Goa or any of the resorts.

There were many facets to his character. He was fun loving and cracked good jokes (camps) and he was patriotic, and tried to encourage people to stay back. “We should do something for the country ma”. or “We can celebrate Ayudha Pooja one day before but not Independence Day ma”). He once told me “you don’t know a lot about me. “Did you know I was the president of the Lions Club, Century Club?” I had never thought about him having a life out side of the institute.

My association with Dr SR Chandrasekhar began in 1993 when I moved with my family to Bangalore. My kids were small and I was looking for a part time job .My friends in

the institute were sure that no part time jobs were given at the institute. I met Dr and I told him that I wanted to work with the children in Sunaad on a part time basis. I was so surprised and thrilled that he agreed. That was the beginning of a very good working relationship , we worked very well together

I thank him for giving me the public relations responsibility which I thought that I couldn’t do. With his support as I completed the projects that he assigned me, I gained confidence. I treasure the days that I worked at the institute. He was one of the important people in my life and I will always hold him in high regard. May his soul rest in peace.

I had met him several years ago when SRCISH had organised a workshop on Swallowing Disorders and I still remember Dr. Chandrasekhar’s zeal and motivation.

Like a parent who has a biological offspring and an adopted one and who dotes on both, Sir too was committed to his own profession of Otorhinolaryngology and the profession of Speech and Hearing from what I saw at SRCISH!

May his soul rest in peace. May all of you at SRCISH continue to carry the baton and work with the fervour taking the work far ahead.
