    THE IONOSPHERE

    The Earth's ionized atmosphere extends upwards fromapproximately 35 miles above t he Earth, and is created largelyby s o l a r ultraviolet radiation which strikes the neutral airmolecules, causing them to split into electrically charged ionsand electrons. These charged particles form an electricalconductor capable of reflecting radio wave s, making possibleradio transmissio n over long dis tance s on the Earth's surface.Canada, in particular, depends o n ionospheric reflection forcommunication in its northern regions.

    Since charged particles interact with magnetic field s,the Earth's magnetic field plays a strong role in the behaviorof the ionosphere. Activity on the Sun creates a moving plasmaof charged particles which extends beyond the Earth, carryingwith it an associated magnetic field. Enhancements of the solarplasma and its associated field interact with the Earth's mag-netic fi eld, causing ionospheric disturbances, thereby linkingionospheric behavior with solar activity. The Earth's polarand near-polar regions are most affected since the magnetic fieldlines that originate near the poles and extend a very gr eatdistance from Earth are accessible to solar and particle fields .

    When the ionosphere becomes disturbed following solarstorms or other phenomena associated with the Sun, its reflec-ting properties are.Laffected. Consequently, radio communicationsare disrupted, sometimes for lengthy periods. A variety ofdisturbed conditions may occur at high latitudes.

    Pgrhap s the worst ionospheric condition, from the stand-point o f high la titude communications, is the polar blackout.Dur ing such occurr ences, rad io refle ctions fr%% the ionospheredo not occur at norma l freque ncies . Rocket flights and otherexperiments have shown that these polar blackouts stem from anabnormal ionization increase in the lower ionosphere (D-region)which is caused by precipitating solar particles. The resul-tant greater number of collisions between ionized and neutralparticles in this regio n causes radio waves to be absorbedbefore they can be reflected. Durin g such conditions radiocommunications at high frequencies may oease for periods ofsevera l days.

    The ionospheric storm is another type of disturbancewhich is most prevalent at highe r latitudes. It is character-ized by a general instability of i onospheric conditions, a de-crease in the maximum density of ionization and an increase inradio wave absorption.much lower than normal during these periods and within therestricted communication spectrum the radio signals are subjectto rapid fluctuations in signal intensity. An ionosphericstorm is usuelly accompanied by a period of unusual fluctua-tion i n terrestrial magnetic activity and is rela ted to solaractivity through the passage of solar plasma past t he Earth.Such conditions may persist f or.da ys.

    Sudde n ionospheric disturbances also cause l o s s ofcommunications, producing an abrupt and simultaneous radi ofadeout throughout the sunlit hemisphere of the Earth, whichmay last from 10 minutes to an hour. This phenomenon is causedby solar X-ray bursts which cause enhanced ionization in theD-region of the ionosphere.

    It is clear that, in addition to its scientific value,increased knowledge about the ionosphere can be app lied directlyto communications and track ing operations. Predictions ofionospheric storms and disturbances are often unsatisfactorybecause t h e y ar e based on inadequate information. By gainingan improved knowledge of the ionosphere and the mechanismsaffecting it, more precise predictions can be made, and bettermethods developed t o deal with communicating via the ionosphere.Canada, with its northern communications problem, has a specialinterest in such knowledge.

    The ionosphe re is studied from the ground by transmittingstrong radio signals and listening for the reflected echoes.The resultant time delays and received signal strengths are usedto obtain information on the ionization at various heights inthe ionosphere, up to the la yer of maximum electron density.

    Above this la yer, the ionos phere must be sounded fromabove to provide such information. A satellite sounder isideal for this as it also provides information on the topsideionosphere over the entire globe. By means of the topside sound-ing technique developed i n Canada, world-wide electron-densityprof'iies can be obtained above the height of maximum electrondensity of the ionosphere., To interpret these in terms of thephysical processes which take place , addition al information isneeded. Some of this is supplied by the direct measurementinstrumentation carried in addition to the topside soun der.

    ISIS-B SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS

    The following experiments carried by I S I S - B were chosenby a joint committe e of Canadian and US scientists:

    Swept and Fixed Frequency Ionospheric Sounder ( G . K . Lockwoodand L.E. Petrie, Communications- esearch Centre of Ottawa.)

    To map the electron density profile of the ionospherebelow the spacecraft using both swept and fixed frequencytransmission over the range 100 khz to 20 mhz. Sweptfrequency profiles will be availab le every 144 km alongthe satel lite,p ath, and fixed frequency profiles every0.27 km.

    Very Low Frequency Receiver and Stimulator (R.E. Barri ngton,

    To observe VLF radio signals of natural origin within theionosphere from 50 hz to 3 0 khz; to observe VLF signalspropagated from ground transmitters; to stimulate andobserve VLF resonances produced by a swept frequencyoscillator within the spacec raft; to observe the effectsof the surroundfng ionosphere plasma o n the sh ort sounderantenna
