I love skating. I have been skating forabout three and a half years now. Ilove to read your magazine. Rightnow I am in Freestyle 5, trying for 6.But I cannot land those Axels. Anytips? I am looking for a pen palaround 12 years old or older, andaround my level.Rebecca Lillis, 13, FS 5Inwood Ice ArenaDiamond, Ill.

Axels are tough, but, as they say, prac-tice makes perfect. Try a jump harnessor off-ice jump classes. You will havehappy landings in no time.

This is my first time writing to all youskaters out there reading this, and tothis magazine also. I’d like to ask fora pen pal, preferably a girl of thesame age and/or skating level as me.Dakota Lyons, 12, FS 6Roosevelt Park Ice ArenaRapid City, S.D.

I love to skate! I think it is the bestsport ever! I am in Freestyle 2/3/4. Ihave the best coach ever. Her nameis Valarie Hofmann. I am very goodfriends with her daughter, Abby, who also skates. Valarie has taken mevery far and I would like to thankher for that. I would also like tothank my grandmother, because itwas her idea to have me start skat-ing. I would also like to thank mygrandfather for paying for every-thing. And last but not least, mymom for taking me four days a weekand for supporting me. I am havinga lot of trouble landing my loopjump. Also I am having trouble onmy backward scratch spin. If anyonehas any tips on them, I would reallyappreciate it!CheyAnn M. Statton, 12, FS 2/3/4Mt. Wow! You are working on FS 2, 3 and 4— you’re a busy gal! Make sure you arenot biting off more than you can chew;take it a level at a time. The loop jumpis a timing jump, so make sure youwatch the take-off. The back scratchspin is a Freestyle 5 element, so masteryour FS 2, 3 and 4 elements, and thenmove on.

I love skating! I have been skatingseven years now. My teacher’s nameis Heather Piepenburg, or sometimesI have Joy Thomas or Claudia Brown.I am now working on my Axel. Iskate three or four times a week, andI am on a skating team called Skip-jacks. I would like to have KimberlyRolfs for a pen pal. If I can’t get Kim-berly, I would like to have someonewho is 9-11 years old in Level 2 orhigher.Rosie Sedney, 9Ice WorldForest Hill, Md.

This is my second time writing toyour magazine. I’d like to give you anupdate! Last time I wrote, I was inDelta, struggling with 3-turns. Now Iam in Freestyle 5, struggling with adouble toe! Any tips on landing it? Ihave a consistent Axel (my favoritejump!) and a sometimes consistentdouble Salchow. I landed it for thefirst time last week! I have one ques-tion. Can you request a pen pal ifthat person did not ask for one? I’dlike to have Allyson Hughes andSamantha Rekas as pen pals. But any-one else would be nice, too!Alyssa Chassman, 12, FS 5Northbrook Sports CenterNorthbrook, Ill.

Hats off to you — Delta to FS 5 is great! The double toe and the double Salchoware above FS 5, so take your time andtake it a level at a time. Keep up thegood work! Regarding the pen pal pro-gram, yes, you can request a pen palwho has not requested you. We will for-ward your letter to as many as threenames that you have requested, and itis up to them to reply if they wish to.Details of the pen pal program are onthe right side of this page.

I think your magazine is a great idea.I would love someone to talk skatingwith, since my family and friends aregetting a little tired of hearing aboutit all the time because they aren’tnearly as into it as I am. I was won-

dering if Eileen Huynh, Elena Kozber(I’m not quite sure what you mean by“punk like me” so I don’t know if I fitthat description), and or AmandaJames (I’m having the same problemwith my waltz jump so I can sympa-thize with you) would like to be mypen pals. I’m willing to be pen palswith anyone at any level or at anyage. I think it would be cool to have apen pal that lives kind of close so wemight be able to meet, and Elieen andElena do. I did my very first competi-tion April 1-3 at Sprinker Rec Center. Rachael Coffman, 15, FS 2Bremerton Ice Skating CenterBremerton, Wash.

I love to skate! I have been taking pri-vate lessons since I was 9. I skate attwo different rinks, three times aweek — twice for private lessons andonce for synchronized skating. Iwould like to request Adyam Mekon-nen and Megan Wellard for pen pals.If not them, then anyone around myage and level.Breanne Bellao, 13, FS 4/5Bridgewater Ice ArenaBrockton, Mass.

I’ve been skating since I was 4 yearsold. This is my second year compet-ing with a coach. I would like EmilyCarrello as a pen pal because she’s myage and level. If she can’t be my penpal, then I would like someone myage and level.Emily Mayer, 12, FS 4/5Mike Modano Ice ArenaLivonia, Mich.

I’ve been skating for about threeyears now. I like working on my spi-rals and my jumps, and my favoriteskater is Michelle Kwan. I would likeLiza Torsilieri as a pen pal, or anyoneclose to my age and level. I was alsowondering what kind of off-ice exer-cises you would recommend tostrengthen my left leg.Ashley Bohm, 11, FS 1IceoplexOceanside, Calif.

I am very impressed that you wantmore info on leg strengthening. Manyskating coaches teach off-ice jumpclasses that would definitely strengthenthose skating legs, so check with yourcoach on the possibilities. Running, power walking and biking are also ben-eficial to getting leg strength. The book-store or library are also good resources

RECREATIONAL ICE SKATING, SUMMER 2005 11

Multi-sport youth athletes arebecoming a rarity. Anincreasing number of chil-

dren are specializing in one sport atan early age, training year-round andcompeting on an “elite” level. Theever-present dream of sports successis creating constant pressure foryounger and younger athletes totrain longer, harder and more intelli-gently. Unfortunately, many parentsbelieve the growing misperceptionthat competitive sport requiresexclusivity and that athletes whoparticipate in one sport year-roundget an edge on those who split timebetween multiple sports. However, research indicates that this approachcould backfire.

In competitive figure skatingthere is a tremendous push to devel-op young skaters. In order to qualifyfor regional competition andbeyond, many coaches believe thatskaters need to be landing all of theirdouble jumps, including their dou-ble Axel, by the age of 12. Coachesand parents look at Tara Lipinski, who won gold at the Olympics at age15, and believe she must have beenlanding triples by the time she was 8years old! With this kind of thinkingand pressure, it’s not surprising thatcoaches encourage their skaters tospecialize very early.

While child developmentresearchers believe it is never tooearly for children to participate ina wide range of sport activities, they caution that participation inorganized athletic competitionshould generally not begin beforethe age of 8. Researchers believe

that, by age 8, children are psycho-logically mature enough to acceptcoaching and are physicallymature enough to participate insports with a minimal risk ofinjury. The emphasis for sportsparticipation at the youth levelshould be on skill developmentand fun, not on intense competi-tion. Researchers have suggested13 as the age at which most chil-dren can cope with, and benefitfrom, more intense competition.

Researchers caution parents andcoaches against pressuring childreninto specializing in one sport at anearly age. Anecdotal reports suggestrisks of “burnout” from physical andemotional stress, missed social andeducational opportunities, and dis-ruptions of family life. Unfortunate-ly, the lure of national and Olympicsuccess can motivate athletes andtheir parents to commit to special-ized training programs too early. Thelow probability of reaching this loftygoal does not appear to discouragemany aspirants.

Research by Tudor Bompa, aleading expert in the theory of train-ing and coaching, recommends thatathletes avoid early sports specializa-tion. He found that those who par-ticipate in a variety of sports and spe-cialize only after reaching the age ofpuberty tend to be more consistentperformers, have fewer injuries andadhere to sports longer than thosewho specialize early.

So what are parents to do? Talkwith your children. Find out if thedecision to specialize is theirs or thecoach’s. If your children are in mid-

dle school or older and want to focussolely on skating, then no problem. If they want to continue doing mul-tiple sports yet feel pressure from acoach to specialize, talk it through.Remind them that playing teamsports like basketball or soccer canbuild leg muscles as well as give thema break from the rink. Consider sug-gesting ballet, dance or other relatedclasses — these can be a great supple-ment to any skating program.

The Positive Coaching Allianceadvocates that the decision to spe-cialize be made by the athletes them-selves, free from parental or coach-ing pressure. At some point athletesmay consider specializing in onesport and curbing or dropping theirparticipation in others. This is not abad thing, and it can even be a goodthing. But the impetus should comefrom the player, not parental orcoaching pressure. Coaches and par-ents should provide valuable guid-ance and perspective, and ultimate-ly let the child decide.

Bottom line: Kids get a great dealout of playing more than one sportand participating in activities outsideof sports. It should be entirely up tothem as to whether or not they wishto specialize, and when.

Sport Specialization:A Disturbing Trend

by Kathy Toon

health & well-being

Page 12: ISI's Exciting New Event

With skating movementstoday becoming more cre-ative and complicated, it is

advisable to add off-ice resistancetraining to your skating program.Resistance training is done to

strengthen your muscles and ten-dons (tendons attach themuscle to a bone) by usingsomething that puts resis-tance against your muscles, such as a weight. Resistancetraining provides the foun-dation (strength) to yourbody that’s necessary foryour coaches to build upon.

Why is this necessary? To prevent injuries thatcould end your skatingcareer, as well as to makethose jumps and spinsmore achievable! The bestway to avoid injuries is tocondition the muscles thatare most likely to beinjured, using resistancetraining.

Skaters tend to use thesame muscles over andover again. This results insome muscles gettingstronger, while other less-used muscles take a backseat. Every muscle in thebody has an opposite mus-cle. For example, your

quadricep muscles (those on thefront of your thigh) are used con-tinuously when skating. The oppo-site muscles are the hamstrings(those on the back of the upperleg). When skating, your quadri-

ceps become verystrong, overpow-ering the ham-strings. You mustkeep a balance ofstrength betweenthese muscles, orinjury will result. The knee is usual-ly the area thatgets injured. Theonly way to pre-vent injury fromoccurring is to

strengthen the hamstrings, so that

they can withstand the power ofthe quadriceps.

So, how do you develop thisstrength so that you have a goodfoundation? What will it cost? Witha few simple instructions, you candevelop your own foundation withresistance training right at home.

Remember, anything can beused as resistance. You do not needexpensive equipment to get greatresults! A pound of sand weighs thesame as a pound of gold — yourmuscles will respond no matterwhich you use. Let’s look at whatyou can do with things you mayhave lying around the house.

The first exercise is for youradductors, or inner thigh muscles.

This is important becausethe opposite muscle of theinner thigh is the outerthigh, which happens to bevery strong. The adductorsare a group of muscles thatyou use to draw your legs inclose together on the ice. These muscles play a majorrole in preventing injury bystabilizing the knee whenyou jump and land.

All that is needed forthis exercise is a round ballabout the size of a soccerball. Sit down on a chairwith the ball between yourknees. Squeeze in gentlywith both legs until you feelthe muscles of the innerthigh tense. Hold for twoseconds, then release tostarting position. Do thateight times. As time goeson, you can push a littleharder. Be careful never tooverdo it, because if youstrain these muscles, youwon’t be skating for a while.

Try Off-Ice Resistance Trainingfor Stronger Skating

The best way to avoidinjuries is to condition

the muscles.

RECREATIONAL ICE SKATING, SUMMER 2005 13

The next exerciserequires a long sock or oneleg of a pair of pantyhose, with no holes. Put about 1pound of sand in and tie itshut. Tie it around oneankle. Stand straight up, 5to 8 inches from a wall, andplace your hands on thewall to keep your balance.Your feet should be aboutshoulder-width apart.

Now bend the knee ofthe leg with the weight onit, bringing the foot uptoward your buttocks.Keep your foot in a nor-mal, relaxed position.Bring your foot up so thatthe bottom of your leg isparallel to the floor — nohigher (in other words, make an “L” shape withthat leg). The front of theupper leg that you’re exer-cising should remain paral-lel to the wall. Hold theknee bent for two seconds, then return to the startingposition.

health & well-beingDo this eight times on one leg,

then move the weight to the otherleg and repeat the exercise on thatside. You should feel the tendonsbehind your knee tense, but youshould not feel pain. If you do feelpain, remove some of the sandfrom the sock and try again. If youcannot do eight repetitions, startwith a number you can do. Fromthere, work up to eight repetitions.

Both of these exercises createthe foundation of knee strengthand injury prevention. Theyshould be done two days per week, with three days between (for exam-ple, if you do them on Monday, wait until Thursday to do themagain.) If you are skating the daythat you are supposed to exercise, you should skate first, and then doyour exercises.

Sasha Cohen is taking timeout of her Olympic trainingschedule to star in the ISIAEducation Foundation Bene-fit on Ice show July 29 at Dis-

ney ICE, during the ISI 2005 WorldRecreational Team Championshipsin southern California.

Cohen, who started skating inthe ISI program at age 7, took silverat both the 2004 U.S. Champi-onships and the World Champi-onships in Dortmund, Germany. Shefinished last season with a win at theMarshalls World Skating Challenge, beating 2004 World champion Shizu-ka Arakawa of Japan. Cohen has beenselected the top 2004 female skater

by the United StatesOlympic Committee.

“ISI members and theirfamilies have a unique andexciting opportunity — pos-sibly a once-in-a-lifetimechance — to see a figureskater of this caliber in per-son,” says Donald Bartelson, president of the ISIA Educa-tion Foundation Board ofTrustees. “Those who actquickly and order their tick-ets before July 15 will be guar-anteed a seat for only $20.The price increases to $25 onsite — still an incredible bar-gain — but there’s a strongpossibility that the show willbe sold out in advance due tolimited seating at Disney ICE.

The show is the majorannual fundraiser benefit-ing the Foundation’s schol-arship program, which hasawarded more than$195,000 in college schol-arships to ISI members inthe last 15 years. The pro-

gram rewards skaters for participa-tion in skating, success in acade-mics and community service.

Cohen says she looks at her par-ticipation in the Benefit on Ice showas an inspirational role and a chanceto connect with young skaters. Heradvice? “Every moment counts towork really hard,” she says. “But atthe same time, keep your life in per-spective.” She finds balance by tak-ing vacations, spending time withfamily and making time for hobbiesand interests off the ice.

The past year has been evenmore eventful than usual for the 20-year-old world-class figure skater. InDecember she moved from Connecti-

cut, where she had spent two years, back to her hometown of LagunaNiguel, Calif. She has also returned toher former coach, John Nicks, withwhom she worked for the six yearsprior to her move east.

“It’s been really nice to be backat my home and with my coach. We’re very comfortable with eachother and it seems just like yesterdaythat we left off,” she says.

Nicks, a former Olympian andone of the world’s top figure skatingcoaches, didn’t hesitate to welcomeback one of his most famous stu-dents. “I’m in the business of teach-ing ice skating, and Sasha is a veryexciting person to work with. I thinkwe have a very productive partner-ship,” he says. “I’m very pleased tosee her back here again. I alwaysthought she was a California girl.”

Cohen and Nicks will be focusedin the upcoming months on interna-tional competitions in Korea, Cana-da, Russia and the Czech Republicbefore returning to the United Statesfor the U.S. Figure Skating Champi-onships in St. Louis in January. Thewinner in each discipline will earn anautomatic berth to the 2006 U.S.Olympic team. The remaining squadmembers will be selected by U.S. Fig-ure Skating’s international commit-tee, based on the results of otherrecent competitions. The 2006 Win-ter Olympics will be held in Februaryin Torino, Italy.

In the meantime, Cohen will bepromoting her new book Fire On Ice,an autobiography that hit bookshelvesin March. For more information, visitsashacohen.com.

BOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Each Saturday morn-ing after the Freestyle 1-4 classes, Nashoba Val-ley Olympia holds a couples class, open to anyof its Freestyle 1-4 skaters. Class coach BonnieWalker does a great job at finding each skatera partner, running them through their maneu-vers and putting together a program to preparethe couples for testing.

The class has inspired many of NashobaValley’s skaters to continue taking private cou-ples lessons, continue testing and competewith their siblings or friends.

Sisters Christina and Jessica Proulx, whorecently passed Couples 7, have enjoyedcompeting in couples spotlight as well asshowcasing their talents in Nashoba Valley’sannual ice show.

Lauren Kennedy, 13, and Paige Peterson,14, have been skating together for six yearsand recently passed their Couples 9 test.

“Skating couples is fun and it’s less stress-ful than skating by yourself,” says Lauren. Thefriends skated at the Couples 5 level in the ISIEducation Foundation’s Benefit on Ice show atthe 2002 World Championships in Marlboro,Mass. They plan to continue skating togetherand hope to pass Couples 10.

HOUSTON — Katy Taylor and the HoustonIce Theatre Skaters each performed exhibi-tions at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in Col-lege Station, Texas in April at the rink’sEvening of Appreciation during the week-long opening festivities.

Taylor is the 2004 Junior World bronzemedalist and 2004 National Junior silverladies medalist, and she placed 9th in the2005 U.S. Championships. HITS, 2004 Inter-national Theatre on Ice bronze medalists inthe novice division, recently competed at the2005 ITOI competition in Burlington, Vt.

Many of these skaters, including KatyTaylor, are current members of ISI and alllearned to skate through ISI classes. Thenew Arctic Wolf Ice Center is following theISI learn-to-skate class curriculum.

ARLINGTON, Texas — It’s 11a.m. on a Saturday and thelearn-to-skate students andinstructors at ICE at TheParks are waiting for the iceto be resurfaced. You mightimagine young skaters ask-ing parents for cookies orsodas, playing games orwatching the Zamboni workits magic. Any other day, that might be the case, butSaturday morning at thisarena is the time thatskaters, siblings, parents andinstructors can take a breakfor the Ice Skaters and Every-body Book Club.

The club, named by itsmembers, offers a time toshare book recommenda-tions and listen to a storyread aloud by one of the ICEat The Parks’ skating instruc-tors. On a large poster of an open book, crafted by instruc-tor and local art teacher Julie Hamer, members eagerly jotthe titles of books they have read during the week.

“It brings kids and parents together. It’s a time togather, visit and listen,” notes Caroline Baker, skatingschool director. She believes the book club encouragesyounger skaters’ future academic success and sees a linkbetween this and the academic encouragement provid-ed to high school and college-age skaters through theISIA Education Foundation.

Peggy Welch, mother of skater Alyssa, adds, “Itmakes Alyssa read more and reinforces school reading.”

Alyssa recommends Junie B. Jones books, and saysshe also enjoys the occasional puppet appearances andtalking about books with her friends.

“The book club is very cool and is good for yourbrain, and it helps you in school,” says Melissa Dillon. Her sister, Kelly, agrees: “Book club is fun, and I likereading. I think reading is important to people and ittakes you to a new world from your imagination.”

The learn-to-skate instructors at ICE at The Parksunderstand the importance of practice. Students whopractice become better skaters and are motivated topractice more. The same is true of reading. The more youread, the better reader you become and the more moti-vated you are to read. So how do parents, teachers andcoaches encourage children to practice? Make it fun!

I love figure skating, and have beenlooking for a pen pal. I would love tobe a pen pal to Ali Brown. We have alot in common. I am also 11 years oldand FS 4/5, and I am really close tolanding my Axel, too. I also have asister who skates. But maybe she willbe as surprised as I was when shereads my name — Allison Brown. From one Allie Brown to another AliBrown, please write me; I would loveto write you back!Allison Brown, 11, FS 4/5Mike Modano Ice ArenaWestland, Mich.

I love skating! I have been skating forabout seven years. I’m working onmy Axel and camel spin. I’m alsoworking on my Freestyle 5 test. Iskate three days a week. I would liketo request Ali Brown or Emily Carrel-lo for a pen pal, or anyone who isabout my same age and level.Erin Jansen, 12, FS 4/5Pepsi Ice MidwestBaldwin City, Kan.

I have been skating for 10 monthsnow. I am in Delta and will jump upto Freestyle 1 after my upcomingcompetition, which is April 17. Mycoach’s name is Holly Eisenhour. Myfavorite ice skating moves are the spi-ral, one-foot spin, two-foot spin, lunge and waltz jump. Do you haveany tips on waltz jumps and the one-foot spin? I keep spinning on my toepick and I can’t bring my legs across.I am looking for a pen pal — a girlwho is age 7-9 and FS 1-2.Alissa Wang, 7, FS 1 Ashburn Ice HouseAshburn, Va.

Sounds like you are moving up thetesting ladder. Good for you! On yourwaltz jump, make sure you are follow-ing through with the free leg to getenough height. As for your one-footspin, press down on your heel a bit tosee if you can get to that sweet spin-ning spot on your blade.

I have been skating for about fouryears now. I enjoy it a lot. I wouldlike to thank my coach, Audra, forhelping me since FS 2. She has beena sincere and honest coach. She isvery kind and always helps me. She

is not mean and is very understand-ing. She is also very encouraging. Iactually have never competed, but Iwould like to soon. I am working onmy Axel, but I can’t seem to get mylanding. Do you have any sugges-tions? I would like it if Emily Carrel-lo was my pen pal. We have a lot incommon. Michelle Kwan is my idol!Lily Ho, 12, FS 5McFetridge Sports CenterChicago, Ill.

Sounds like you have a great coach. Askher for some direction with your Axel. Ifyour facility has a jump harness, that’salways a good starting point. Then, I sug-gest an off-ice jump class. Think positiveand those Axel landings will happen!

I have been skating for almost threeyears now, and I absolutely love it!For a pen pal I would love to haveAshley McMahon or Liza Torsilieri. Also, I’m having some trouble withkeeping balance in my sit and backspins, and I’m having trouble land-ing my flips.Rebecca Farrell, 11, FS 2Dix Hill Ice RinkHuntington, N.Y.

If your dilemma is balance, I recom-mend taking some ballet classes to helpyour problem. It is very important foryou to understand where your center is;this will benefit you in all areas of yourskating. Besides, you might discoversome great new arm positions.

I have been skating for about fiveyears now, and I have just landed myAxel. I’m so HAPPY! My coach, GailThomas, and I have been working onmy doubles, but I seem to have a lotof trouble with my double Salchow.I’m not getting the full rotation on it.My coach says I have half of a revolu-tion to go. I was wondering if youhave any tips on landing it. I wouldalso like to have a pen pal like ArielEllison or Ashley Coyne, or someonearound my age and/or level or higher.Jessica Buza, 12, FS 5Chilled PondsChesapeake, Va.

Congrats on the Axel — that’s wonder-ful! Check your take-off for the doubleSalchow. Sometimes skaters rush thetake-off and jump too soon. On thelanding, make sure you don’t leave yourfree foot in front.

Your magazine really interests me.I’ve been skating for three and a halfyears, and have been to four compe-titions. I would really like to have apen pal around the age of 13 or 14,boy or girl, it doesn’t really matter.April Abrena, 13, FS 3/4Van Nuys Ice LandPanorama City, Calif.

I love skating! I have been skating fortwo years now, and I would like torequest Kimberly Rolfs as my pen pal.Benjie Havard, 10, FS 1/2Aerodrome WillowbrookTomball, Texas

I have been skating since I was 6years old. If you look in the synchro-nized skating magazine of Nationalsfrom 2004, you will see my picture. My team came in 16th place out of17 juvenile teams, I think. I took abreak from synchronized skating for2005 and did swimming. I am stilltaking lessons. I am working on myAxel with my coach, Sandra Duarte. She was my coach ever since I start-ed. I would like a pen pal. Ali Brownsounds nice. She has practically thesame likes as me. She and I seem tobe fast learners.Alexa Harris, 11, FS 4/5Sound Shore Ice HutchMount Vernon, N.Y.

I have been skating for almost eightyears now! Skating is fun and cool.My coach’s name is Mary. My formercoach, Toni, recently moved to Ohio.I have been competing for four years.I try to win first, but always come insecond place. I am trying to get my sitspin. Any advice? I like to do scratchspins, back spins and flips. I wouldlike someone my age and level for apen pal to talk to about ice skating.Marissa Ditkowsky, 10, FS 3The RinxCommack, N.Y.

Remember, winning isn’t everything aslong as you do your personal best. Youare in luck with your sit spin questionbecause sit spins are my all-timefavorite spins. I suggest working onshoot-the-ducks and coming up on onefoot to strengthen your leg. Trust me,this will help that sit spin. Good luck!

I am skating at the FS 6 level andworking on my double toe, Salchowand loop (REALLY HARD). I love to

compete and hope to go to Worldsin California this year. I am openfor anyone to be my pen pal, butwould also like Theresa De Luca orEmily Carrello.Jenna Gowell, 11, FS 6Nashoba Valley OlympiaAmherst, N.H.

I have been skating for five years! Ihave just landed my flip! I did itonce, but I can’t quite do it a lot oftimes. Do you have any tips on it?Also, do you have any tips on sit-spins? I want to get lower! I wantKaitlyn Pryde and Rebecca Hafelfin-ger for pen pals, please! If I pass myprogram I will be in Freestyle 4! I loveyour magazine!Tianna Federico, 9, FS 3/4Nashoba Valley OlympiaTyngsboro, Mass.

Mind over matter here — you did itonce and you can do it again! On yourflip, make sure that you have enoughspeed on entry to get full rotation andthen hit that landing on ONE FOOT.You can do it! Getting low on sit spinsis all in leg strength and flexibility.Take some off-ice strength classes tobuild up those legs.

I’d really like a pen pal the same ageand level as me. I’d like MeganWellard, Kaitlyn Pryde or Liza Tor-silieri. I also wondered about myswitch spin. I can do it as many timesaround as necessary for my FS 3 test, but it’s really hard for me to do. I’dreally like some tips to help meimprove.Molly Perry, 11, FS 3Ice BoxWaverly, Pa.

The change-foot is a challenge and myhelpful hint to you is to practice theback spin on two feet first until you getcomfortable, and then go to one foot. The forward position of the spin is notthe problem; it is spinning backward onone foot. Work hard and you’ll get it!

I have been skating for two years. Iam entering Freestyle 2 and I saw theletter from Adyam Mekonnen. I waswondering if I could be AdyamMekonnen’s pen pal.Sierra Romine, 11, FS 2Aerodrome WillowbrookCleveland, Texas

I am Meredith Bardsley from GrandOaks Figure Skating Club in Howell,

Mich. My coach is Christine Haan. Ihave been with her for a year and ahalf. She is a great coach (we startedat Delta) and a wonderful rolemodel. I would like to request a penpal. Hannah Nelson, Kara Burkhartand Emily Carrello all sound inter-esting.Meredith Bardsley, 13, FS 4Grand Oaks Figure

Skating ClubBrighton, Mich.

I have been skating for about a yearnow and I am currently working onmy loop jump and the back spin. Iwould like Ali Brown to be my penpal, and girls around my level. And Iwould like to thank my coach, KentJohnson, for getting me this far.Natalia Socarras, 10, FS 4Kendall Ice ArenaHomestead, Fla.

I love to ice skate. I started when Iwas 5. I am having trouble with myloop jump. I love to do sit spins. I cango very, very low. How can I cross mylegs in my loop jump?Jackie Povitsky, 9, FS 4Skatium Ice ArenaSkokie, Ill.

RECREATIONAL ICE SKATING, SUMMER 200530

Continued from page 29the write stuffOn your loop jump, you DON’T want to CROSS your legs —you need to keep them open, not crossed. The loop jump is atiming jump, so don’t take off too early.

I love skating! It’s hard for me to concentrate on skatingsometimes because I am so old compared to the otherkids in my levels. I know I should always try my best, but sometimes it’s hard. I really have a hard time withmy spins, specifically my scratch spin. Some days I cando my spins easily and other days I can barely get myone-foot spin. Do you have any advice on how to get myscratch spin all the time?Deziree Valadez, 15, FS 3Disney ICE Fullerton Calif.

OLD! YOU — OLD? I don’t think so, girlfriend. You need tokeep a positive attitude and believe in yourself. This will bethe solution to all your daily problems. Keep telling yourselfyou CAN, and you WILL!

I have been skating for about one and a half years. Iknew I’d like to skate when I saw Michelle Kwan skate inthe Olympics. She’s my favorite figure skater. I will begoing to Hershey Park in August for a competition. Iwould like a pen pal who loves to do spins, jumps andshoot-the-ducks. I would prefer Adyam Mekonnen. Idon’t care how old my pen pal is or what level he or sheis in. As long as they like science, it’s fine with me.Augestina Webster, 11, FS 1Vineland Ice ArenaCedarville, N.J.

I have fun skating! I have been doing it for at least fourand a half years, since I was 3. I have two coaches. SaraRobertson helps me with my spins. Rebecca Cockburnhelps me with everything else. I’m also on the Hunt-ington Heartbreakers synchro team and the ice theaterteam. I’ve done a lot of competitions! I won secondplace last month at the California State Games so I’llbe going to America’s Games. I especially like the oneswe get to travel to. I’d like some pen pals far away, likeCourtney K. Blakely, Nicole Meras, or Kimberly Rolfs,or anyone else who likes to write. Maybe we couldmeet at Worlds! Dayna Nicholas, 8, FS 3Skate ZoneHuntington Beach, Calif.

I love to skate. It gives me time to get away from all ofmy problems. I am in Freestyle 5 and have workedhard to get this far. I started when I was 6 and wentuntil I was 9. After my first competition, I stoppedskating for three years. So now that I have found thelove for skating again, I would love a few friends whoenjoy it as much as I do. So I am requesting KaraBurkhart, Ariel Ellison, Ashley Coyne and anyone elsewho loves to skate, to be my pen pal.Shraya Stragey, 15, FS 5SoBe Ice Arena at Fiesta RanchoLas Vegas, Nev.
