Capitol enjoys 16 percentAs the industry enters its most crucial buyingperiod of the year, there is a positive noteamong the doom and gloom reports of a sup-posedly deflated record retail market.Capitol -EMI, which worked its way up to a12 percent market share last year, now has amarket share of close to 16 percent.

"We've just had the most successfulfiscal month in the history of the company,"says Ron Michael -Scott, Director ofMarketing for Capitol -EMI Canada. He isreferring to September, which he reports is"up 30 percent" over the same period last

New Houston album getsboost with Toronto visitWhitney Houston came to Toronto Oct. 12 totalk to the press about her new album. I'mYour Baby Tonight, her first record in threeyears, is set for an Oct. 22 release. The firstsingle, the title track, was released Oct 8 anddebuts on RPM's Hit Tracks chart this weekat No. 85.

BMG, distributor of the Arista album, ispulling out all the stops on this release, hop-ing to match the phenomenal success ofHouston's first two albums. Her self -titled1985 debut sold 8.5 million copies in the U.S.and over a million in Canada. Whitney, thefollow-up, became only the fourth album bya solo artist, and the first by a woman, todebut at No. 1 on the American charts.Houston racked up seven consecutive No. 1hits in the U.S., the only performer ever toaccomplish this, and had three No.1 singles inRPM.

I'm Your Baby Tonight features thework of a handful of high -profile producers, including Narada Michael Walden, the teamof L.A. Reid and Babyface, Michael Masser,Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder, whoduets with Houston on We Didn't KnowHouston makes her production debut on thealbum, co -producing I'm Knockin' withRickey Minor.

"It was fun," Houston says of her pro-ducing experience. "It was challenging." Shesays it is inevitable that she will one dayreturn to her musical roots and record agospel album. At 27, Houston says she is notafraid that, after five years at the top, she will -fall from favour with a fickle public. "I thinksingers will be here to the day we die. Ella,Dionne, Gladys...all those ladies have beenhere a long time."

Leslie Spit Treeo's Laura Hubert, Pat Langnerand Jack Nicholslen, manager Joe Bamford (I),Capitol's Roger Bartel at RPM's offices withJill Lawless, Alison Mercer and Tim Evans.

of retail market shareyear, "and it's our goal to equal that percen-tage for the month of October." He con-tinues, "We staked our claim this summer...and we have to work very hard with radio andretail to maintain that share."

Touching on the doom and gloomreports, Scott stresses, "For us, we have tothink extremely positively, because if you letthe headlines rule your way of doing businessthen your business could very well take aback-seat in importance." He goes on to sug-gest that "peoples' fears turn to flights offancy . . . movies and records . . . when thedollars get tight. I think over the next sixtydays, we have to be very aggressive and weneed to assure that we have a very high pro-file with the consumer to attract them into therecord stores."

One of the high -profile attention -gettersfor Capitol -EMI will be a number of boxsets, some of which have already been releas-ed. These include a four CD -only Lennon setwhich carries a suggested list of $87.98, athree CD/cassette Frank Sinatra set at$49.98, and an eight CD/cassette, nine vinylalbum set from Kate Bush at $155.00. Therewill also be a double live Paul McCartney Bir-thday album.

Scott admits that the box sets are notcheap and that there has been some concernas to whether the expensive box sets willerode the dollars the consumers bring into thestores. It's Scott's contention that theavailability of the box sets will attract con-sumers to the stores and, hopefully, theymight even have some change left to buy newproduct.

August stats paintgloomy industry pictureCRIA stats for August show that net salesdeclined 10 percent from the same month in1989. The stats come as a disappointmentafter July's figures showed the industry in arosier light.

CD sales are still leading the way for in-creased sales value with a 28 percent increasefor the year-to-date, and a tepid 10 percentincrease from August 1989.

The boom in cassette singles seems tohave lost some of its momentum, but is stillsolid, with a combined increase in sales andshipments of 589 percent.

Most worrying is the August decrease innet sales value for cassettes of 15 percent, in-ching cassette sales up to a 2 percent increasefor the year-to-date. In Canada, healthycassette sales are crucial because they arecounted on to generate revenue once provid-ed by vinyl sales. CDs have not filled the gapleft by plummeting vinyl sales as expected.

Overall, net shipments are down 16 per-cent. Despite this, there is optimism amongrecord companies that Fall 1990 will be astrong period, with a lot of solid product dueto hit the market in the coming weeks.

Dog Days of Autumn ... ! Another coupleof those "hot items" I've been sitting on havecome true, but again, the news is just a littletoo crushing to make any comment on. Theindustry is a lot poorer in management talentwith some great people on the loose. However, there are a couple of them whosetrack records will stand up against anyone, and they know who they are. So it shouldn'tbe too long before they are back in.Sometimes very difficult and unpopular deci-sions have to be made, and what a terrible, gut -wrenching position to be in . . . to tell alongtime employee they are no longer needed. No amount of severance pay can make up forthe hurt these people must go through.

Don't miss the opportunity . . . ! Rightnow there are some very talented andknowledgeable people who have been trainedby your competitors and who are now "atliberty." This is a golden opportunity to hiresome very good . . . yes, excellent, people foryour operation. Many of them have years of

    experience in the industry!

They're at the Wall . . . ! Regarding mypiece a few weeks ago, taking the dailies totask about ignoring the fact that BryanAdams and Ronnie Hawkins were on the billfor the Roger Waters' Berlin Wall Memorialbenefit, Wayne James, Music Director atCFJR-AM Brockville, agrees. "I couldn'thelp but respond with total agreement," hewrites. "The major production of The Wallhad an impact on the whole world." SteveThomson, who manages Ronnie, was inBerlin and he took the photo of these twogreat acts which appears here. (EC: We don'tsee too many photos in this column!)He's got a good reputation . . . ! Justfigure, that if you were banned from 30 or 40radio stations out THERE . . . it will benothing to be banned from a further 60 or 70when you get HERE . . . making it an even100!!! It pays to be unpopular!! (EC: There'sBIG money in being unpopular!! And thishas been going on for years!!) NOW . . . therules will change! This is the REAL world!

Nice guy . . . ! That guy who spilled thebeans (EC: It was a salad . . . !) all over MZat that recent record company listeningsession doesn't realize how close he came togoing through the window. Apparently I gotthere just in time to calm MZ down, and helpbrush the vinegar and oil into that veryexpensive cloth. (EC: He should contact theWorkman's Compensation Board . . . !)

Downright Downsizing . . . They've got anew name for it! The minute there is a hint ofrecession, big business takes a look at all thefat they've acquired and uses the troubledtimes as an excuse to "downsize" theiroperation. Didn't we go through this in theearly '80s? (EC: RPM was glossy! Fourcolour!! Really great looking!!) Boy, did wedownsize after that "period of excess"!(EC: Have the limo wait outside while wehave a three-hour dinner!) It was nice . . forawhile!!

Red Tape! Red Tape! No wonder Canada'sprogrammers pull their hair out as the CRTCmakes stupid regulations that no one caneven make sense of. Small wonder we havetrouble getting hold of anyone at theCommission these days. I think they'reembarrassed at having to explain some oftheir regulations in regard to the hit ratioruling. I guess they are really badly informedabout how our business works . . . but it mustbe painful to try to enforce a regulation madein Canada based on retail charts that can't listhits that aren't available. Programmers mustbe confused . . . and amused, but there isn'tmuch they can do about it. RPM continues toNOT have a retail chart and we continue notto be part of this scam!!! (EC: Did you saySCAM . . . ?) Look it up! (EC: He's reallyangry . . . !!)

Say still climbing, it appears ready to surpass those numbers. Can you name the only Cana- dian act to have two top 10 hits this year?

14 and counting ... George Michael's Pray- ing For Time hits No. 1 this week. It marks his fifth No. 1 song and eighth straight to

reach the top 3! If you include his days with Wham!, he has amassed eight No. 1 hits and

    14 straight top 10 hits.

Gino is back! The Time Of Day, a new release from Gino Vannelli, was the most added song this week and debuts at No. 54. It

beat out some other big releases, including Jon Bon Jovi's Miracle (No. 69), Wilson

Phillips' Impulsive (No. 81), and Whitney Houston's I'm Your Baby Tonight (No. 85).

And then there were three The top three spots on the Album chart are very close, so it

will be interesting to see what happens next week. INXS moves up to the third spot and

will try to edge AC/DC and MC Hammer to become the band's second straight No. 1 album. Kick was the top album of 1988. Before that there was Listen Like Theives, which only peaked at No. 24 in 1986, but really broke the band to big international au-

    diences.

    A growing trend . . .

Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby becomes the latest song to cross over from the Dance chart. It debuts there at No.

8, while entering the Hit Tracks chart at No. 98. No less than six of the top ten dance

tracks have crossed over. The biggest is Maxi Priest's Close To You. It drops to No. 2 on

the Dance chart, while climbing to No. 6 on the Hit Tracks chart.

It was Fate! Taylor Dayne's Heart Of Stone becomes her third straight top 5 hit from the

Can't Fight Fate album, as it jumps to No. 4. Love Will Lead You Back peaked at No. 2

and I'll Be Your Shelter topped the chart. The only one. The only Canadian act to

have two top 10 this year is The Northern Pikes. She Ain't Pretty hit No. 6 and Girl With A Problem peaked at No. 8.

Barney Bentall is happy on Lonely Avenue Barney Bentall should win an award: Best

Adjusted Performer. Talking to the front - man for Vancouver's Legendary Hearts is like talking to a craftsman who is happy with his trade, who enjoys and takes pride in his

work. Discussing Lonely Avenue, the new

album from the Legendary Hearts, Bentall sounds measured but confident. "It was a

relatively enjoyable record to make," he says. "Our first record was made over a

period of about five months, and by the end of it you didn't know which way was up. For

this one, the recording period only took about five weeks, and the mixing two weeks

on top of that. So it always seemed to be spontaneous, and the performances never felt

laboured. You had your wits about you for the whole time."

Lonely Avenue was recorded largely live off the floor. Bentall doesn't think the band

discovered a recording secret solution on this album, but he does credit producer Danny

Kortchmar with finding an approach perfect- ly suited to the band and the material. "You

can go for that (approach) just for the sake of going for it, and then it can seem pretty

wrong. Recording and live performances are very different things...That's where Danny was really great. I don't think he would have

done it live off the floor if he didn't feel the band was capable of it. When we started

rehearsing, I don't think he knew how he would make the record until he played with

us. Our band has been together for a long time, and I think maybe he sensed that

chemistry and thought, 'well, let's do it this way.' He comes from a band background,

playing in the great bands he's been in. I think that's the thing we pride ourselves in, so

it was very complementary in that way." The Legendary Hearts' cohesiveness is

    -

hard-won. The band had been together for nearly a decade when they made their major -

    label debut album -

and had their first hit with Something To Live For

    - in 1988. Bentall

is philosophical about the years of bar dates, demos and independent EPs. "Sometimes

you can look back and say it was a grind," he admits. "But in a certain way, all the way

Warner Music releases 65 -hr Bach extravaganza

After nineteen years of recording, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt have

completed the first historically authentic compilation of all 199 of Bach's cantatas.

The project is a box set to end all box sets, consisting of 90 LPs or 83 CDs and

lasting a total of 65 hours. Harnoncourt and Leonhardt began

recording the cantatas in 1970, and have enlisted the talents of six choirs, 51 vocal soloists and two musical ensembles,

Leonhardt Consort and Concentus musicus Wien led by Baroque violinist and wife of

Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Alice Harnoncourt. The Harnoncourt and Leonhardt com- pilation was awarded a special prize on Oc-

tober 3 of this year, The Gramophone Award for Special Achievement.

along, there were frustrating times, but we were always having a good time. We were

never satisfied until we got a record deal, but we were playing gigs, we were writing songs, we were all doing something we really

loved...Now I look back and I kind of miss some of those times. But that's just life, isn't

it? You forget the bad times." The turning point for the band came, he

says, when they adopted a new attitude - or, rather, renewed their conviction. "The turn- ing point is based on deciding to take the

thing into your own hands until you can find people you really trust so you can turn some

of that control over," he explains. "That's when we came up with that first independent video. We were a little discouraged, so we

said, 'let's make a really good demo. Let's make a video.' Then we decided to send me to

Toronto to look at management and record companies. That's when we got hooked up

with (manager) Bernie Finkelstein, and through Bernie we got involved with CBS

    Records."

The band's increased profile and security have allowed Bentall to expand his musical

activities. He produced, with Legendary Hearts' guitarist Colin Nairne, Mae Morre's

debut album, Oceanview Motel. Apart from getting "a lot of grey hairs" in the process, he

enjoyed the experience. "What we tried to do with that record was retain the sort of

grassroots feel the demos had, with everybody pitching in to help it work," he

recalls. "Sometimes it's hard when there's the pressure of doing it for a record com-

pany, but I really enjoyed it. I feel very good about that record."

Bentall says he would like to do more producing, "if something comes up." At the

moment, he anticipates being on the road for a while, both in Canada, and, aftei the

American release of Lonely Avenue in early 1991, in the United States. As for future am-

bitions, he is modest. "1 want to keep making records. You can have all kinds of hopes and

expectations, but if you look at them realistically...I just wanted this record to be

better. I feel like that was accomplished, and I'm very happy about that."

Morning Music marks 20th year with CD release

Morning Music, a Canadian independent publisher, celebrates its 20th anniversary with

the release of a CD compilation titled Happy Around The Clock. This collection of in-

strumentals is described as being geared "to match the daily routine of many upper

middle-class women," with a selection for every hour of the day.

Adhering to an "easy/contemporary" format, the CD provides musical vignettes

for "lunch at the corner bistro," the "quick shower and change before a night on the town," and 22 others. The CD is being

distributed to broadcasters througout North America with hopes of increasing the ex-

    posure of the "easy/contemporary" format.

BMG and Wrensong signsub -publishing agreementNashville's Wrensong Publishing Corpora-tion has signed a sub -publishing agreementwith BMG Music Publishing Canada. Found-ed by the father -daughter team of Reyn andRee Guyer in Minnesota in 1983, they movedto Nashville's Music Row and a year laterscored their first No. 1 single, Little Thingsby the Oak Ridge Boys.

Wrensong's catalogue includes the CMAand ACM Song of the Year Where've YouBeen, which was recorded by Kathy Mattea,as well as hit singles from Heart (Stranded)and Lorrie Morgan (Trainwreck) along with anumber of album cuts by Anne Murray, RayCharles, The Temptations, Reba McEntire,Wild Rose and others.

Wrensong has now expanded into pro-duction and is currently working on thedevelopment of several new artists.

The above announcement was made byRee Guyer, President of Wrensong, andNorma Barnett of BMG Music PublishingCanada.

Tapping into video:an industry perceptionIn effect, music videos have replaced whatthe 45 used to do for the music industry:focus directly on individual songs and createthe ferociously hit -obsessed market that it is

today.Despite the obvious impact video has

had on potential successes, the very word`video' often causes substantial malaiseamong artists, their managers and respectiverecord companies. The expense of making avideo can be daunting, but Bill Bobek, Na-tional Publicity Director for MuchMusic, suggests that it is not just the high -budgetvideos that make it into rotation.

"Often the most simplistic creations arethe best," says Bobek. "Much looks for newapproaches to the medium. We like to`remove the screen' and let video be looseand fun."

Bobek believes that many people in theindustry view Much and MusiquePlus asanother radio station in terms of servicing itwith product. This should change. WithMuch receiving on average 60 videos a week,it's not hard to imagine looking past one ofthem if it isn't an immediate attention -grabber.

Despite the fact that video may not beexploited to its full potential at this point,John Martin, Much's Director of Music Pro-gramming, says that "attitudes have changeda lot," and that especially the new genera-tions see video as what it is, a more in-depthmeans of expression.

Martin notes that for such a youngmedium, video is not doing too badly, con-sidering it is planned for from day one withany given recording project. Like anythingelse, Martin says video has its cliches, but at the same time it can and has beenused to create some "strange and wonderfulthings."
