Call 922 240 346. Ara Malikian, one of the most brilliant violinists of his gen- eration, will play the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on Septem- ber 11. Widely acclaimed and the win- ner of a long list of awards, he has given concerts in more than 40 different countries and accompanied many of the world’s greatest orchestras. He began studying violin with his father and gave his first con- cert at the age of 12. At the tender age of 14 years old he was invited to study at Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Median in Hannover, their youngest ever student, before continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He plays an energetic and intriguing mix of classical music fused with Middle East- ern, Central European, Argen- tinean and Flamenco music, as well as the works of many of the very best modern com- posers. Daughter of legendary fla- menco artist Farruco, the dancer became a name in her own right during her long career, sharing the stage with many other famous art- ists including El Güito, Man- uela Carrasco and Antonio Canales. As star of many fla- menco shows she has toured the world including a stint in London with The Raíces Fla- mencas show. This last leg of her career is entitled Tribute to the Greats in which she honours flamenco favourites such as Lola Flores, La Perla and Carmen Amaya and her own father. With her in the show will be many of the current big names in the flamenco world, including her son Manuel Fernández. The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost €25 to €35. Wakeman first became well known as a member of pro- gressive rock band Yes back in the early 1970s and has also had a long and success- ful career as a session musi- cian, working with stars such as Marc Bolan, Black Sab- bath, Lou Reed, Elton John and David Bowie. Born in England in 1949, he started playing piano at the age of five and purchased his first electronic keyboard at 12 years old. He later studied clarinet, piano, modern music and orchestration at the Royal College of Music for a year. During 1970 and 1971, Wake- man was in Folk Rock group the Strawbs, with whom he recorded three albums, before joining Yes. Though initially only with Yes for around four years, he has often rejoined them in sister projects and reunion tours. He has also had a long and productive solo career and in total has sold more than 50 million copies of his diverse works. He has appeared on several British TV shows, including Countdown, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You and Top Gear, as well as being the host of Gastank, a Channel 4 show featuring interviews and performances with 1970s musicians, as well as the ITV comedy show Live at Jongleurs.
