This week I read about a fascinating research study done by Vicki Medvec, a p r o f e s s o r a t N o r t h w e s t e r n

University. She studied Olympic medallists and she discovered that bronze medallists were happier than silver medallists. Here’s why. Medvec found that silver medallists tended to focus on how close they came to winning gold so they weren’t satisfied with silver. Bronze medallists tended to focus on how close they came to not winning a medal at all so they were just happy to be on the medal stand.

I think that study reveals a fascinating facet of human nature: your focus determines your reality. How we feel isn’t determined by objective circumstances. If that was the case, silver medallists would be happier than bronze medallists because they had an objectively better result. But how we feel isn’t determined by our objective circumstances. How we feel is determined by our subjective focus.

Here’s another way of saying it: your internal attitudes are more important than your external circumstances.

John Milton said it best: “The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a Heaven out of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.”

That’s so true isn’t it? All of us know people who can find something good to focus on even in the worst of circumstances. And all of us know someone who can find something bad to focus on even in the best of circumstances.

There is a universal principle I need to share with you right out of the gate: we tend to see what we’re looking for. I think there are two basic types of people in the world: complainers and worshippers. Complainers can always find something to complain about. Worshippers can always find something to praise God about.

- continued -

All of us develop hypotheses about everything all the time. Then we look for evidence to support our hypotheses and ignore evidence to the contrary.

For example, if you decide you don’t like someone you’ll notice everything that is wrong with that person. And you’ll probably ignore anything you could potentially like about them. The flipside is true as well. If you’re head-over-heels in love with someone you tend to only notice those things you love about them.

We see what we’re looking for.

What does that have to do with worship? A worshipper makes a pre-decision to look for something to praise God about even in the direst of circumstances. Where is your focus? Are you focusing on what you don’t have or what God has done in your life?

Keep the “Son” in your eyes,

July 4: Use extreme caution today as you celebrate the birthday of our wonderful nation. Aerial fireworks have been banned but a spark of fire from any fireworks could spell danger in our drought conditions. Enjoy this special day with your family and friends because you matter!.

July 11: Write a note of gratitude. When is the last time you sent a snail mail letter? E-mail is great, but because our friends and loved ones matter, send a handwritten note to someone you appreciate. Suggestions might be to the leaders and others you know about at our church who kept things going until Ken and Lynn arrived. We may be among the last generations to use cursive, so do something that still matters by writing that note this Monday.

July 18: Don’t drive over the speed limit! It’s one way to save money on gas on trips this summer. You can’t get a speeding ticket if you don’t speed and the life you save may be your own!

July 25: Find a shady spot outside or a comfy chair in air-conditioned comfort and read a book today. What better place to find one than at UMW’s Book Nook? The selection is outstanding, the price is right, and your purchase funds UMW mission projects!!

FROM YOUR FAITH DEVELOPMENT TEAM, based on Every Monday Matters (Emerzian/Bozza).

IITS Night at the Ballpark! Thursday, July 7th, 5:45 PM at Whataburger Field. Tickets are $8 for reserved seat only or $15 for

reserved seat, cheeseburger, fries and a soda; it is also $1 night for sodas and hotdogs. There will be a concert at 5:45 PM by "Come December" and a devotion given by a Hooks player prior to the game. Sign up at the opportunities table and write a check (payable to “CC Hooks Baseball”) or turn your money in to the church office for the tickets by Thursday June 30, as we will buy them on Friday, July 1st so that we'll all be sitting together. Let's make this a big event for the whole IITS family!!

Emmaus News Emmaus News

A new Coastal Bend Emmaus board of directors has been put in place. Due to some reorganization changes, the previously- scheduled Men’s and Women’s walks in August and September have been cancelled. However, the Women’s walk for October 6-9 is still on track. Applications for the walk can be found on the Opportunities table. Our thanks to Lowell and Betty Thomas who have been the Emmaus representatives for IITS for several years. They are stepping down from this responsibility, so we will be seeking someone to take their place in this capacity. Until then, if you have questions, you can contact Betty Workman, CBE Treasurer, at [email protected].
