From Gold to Art

The Wells-Barkerville-Bowron Lakes area has a long history of cultural excellence. During the first Gold Rush in Canada in the 1860s, Barkerville was the largest settlement west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. Men and women came from all over the world hoping to build a better life in British Columbia’s Cariboo. They brought their music, art and culture: Barkerville’s public library was established as soon as a building was provided to house it; the Cariboo Literary Society met regularly; the Cariboo Amateur Dramatic Society presented their first productions in a saloon until they had raised enough money to build the Theatre Royal.

The town of Wells was born in the 1930s during the second Gold Rush in the area. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mine in Wells endeavoured to hire miners who were also musicians to help build community spirit with the company’s dance band and orchestra. Continuing in the artistic vein, a community of artists’ studios and galleries has been established over the past thirty-five years.

Professional quality instruction is the hallmark of Island Mountain Arts. For almost forty years, instructors from around the globe have gathered in this tiny mountain village to mentor students in an intense yet informal setting. Beginning with a one week class in 1977, IMA now boasts a roster of classes which draws 175 students annually. Classes of the Annual School of the

Arts are held in the large, airy classrooms of the Wells-Barkerville School.

IMA restored the old Hill Meat Market building on historic Pooley Street in 1987. The building now houses the Island Mountain Arts Public Gallery, which features monthly exhibitions, as well as a gift shop and IMA offices. The IMA Gallery is well known for the professional quality of its exhibitions, concerts, artist talks, literary readings and coffeehouses.

In 2004 IMA started the ArtsWells Festival of All Things Art, which has become a great signature event for the town of Wells, as well as the Cariboo region. The festival is proud to present a diverse array of performers, musicians and visual artists from across Canada. The International One Minute Play Festival is also part of this exciting event on the August long weekend.

In 2014 IMA launched the successful CAWS for the Nest Campaign, which resulted in the purchase of a large property and building, across from the Community Hall in the heart of historic Wells. With this property IMA has started a new Artist-In-Residence program and has plans for future development of more studio spaces and more opportunities for artists.

We are proud to serve students and the public from throughout BC and beyond by employing professional artists as instructors, exhibitors and performers.

NEW! Artist-In-Residence Program

In the summer of 2014, Island Mountain Arts launched the CAWS For the Nest Campaign to raise funds to purchase a property in the historic commercial district of Wells in order to run this Artist-In-Residence

program and expand its capacity for arts programming in the Cariboo. The campaign was a success thanks to over 200 individuals donors who donated almost $40,000 and Integris Credit Union that came

on board as a partner in the project to provide the financing. Island Mountain Arts is extremely grateful for the amazing support and is excited to maximize the potential of this new 4000 square foot building and

adjoining property. Securing the property is really just the beginning of this new endeavour, as we begin to raise funds for renovations and property improvements.

Consider a monthly donation to the ongoing CAWS For the Nest Campaign by visiting www.imarts.com. See page 19 for more information on giving a charitable donation to IMA.

However, there are fundamental ingredients, vital to creating a great song and ways of approaching songwriting, which have stood the test of time in all genres of western music.” In this workshop, which is co-led by veteran songwriter and past member of Spirit of the West, Linda McRae, participants will spend time defining and examining those ‘fundamental ingredients’ of a song through performance, discussion and hands-on writing. Students will also learn basic stagecraft and how to operate and troubleshoot a simple PA system, guitar and stage equipment. Participants will have the opportunity to perform their newly created songs as part of the kick off to the ArtsWells Festival, which begins on the final day of the workshop.

LINDA MCRAE has performed in venues as diverse as Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre with the Vancouver Symphony to New Folsom Prison’s Library with the inmate’s blues band. Playing guitar, banjo and accordion and with a voice equally warm and world-weary, McRae’s stories are stand-alone gems sketching out solitary men as convincingly as forthright female romantics. One song breaks your heart, the next one puts it back together. Her latest album, “Fifty Shades of Red” has garnered much critical acclaim.

29th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL HARP SCHOOLMonday, August 17 - Friday, August 21 Early Bird Fee: $499 Regular Fee: $555 Harp Rental: $50 for novice harps, $100 for Int/Adv Harps

MORNING SESSIONS

NOVICE WITH KIM ROBERTSON In this gently paced course, learn the essential ingredients of how to play expressively and comfortably even as a beginner. Covering the basics of tone, technique and phrasing, exercises will include warm-ups to improve dexterity, shortcuts for coordinating the two hands, and building blocks for creating simple but effective arrangements. Suitable for the experienced beginner or for the early intermediate player who would like a review of the basics of technique. Ability to read music helpful but not necessary. For complete beginners (those with no prior musical training or harp instruction) or those that need a refresher, consider taking an online program to study at home with teacher and founder of the Harp School, Marilyn Rummel, to prepare you for the Novice Workshop with Kim Robertson. This program will start in July and include six sessions over three weeks for $260. If you are interested in this program please contact IMA at [email protected] or at 1-800-442-2787.

INTERMEDIATE WITH SHARLENE WALLACE The Intermediate level harp class will encompass how to play and what to play at the I-Can-Play-With-Both-Hands-But-Would-Love-To-Play-With-More-Ease level! The class will learn new tunes, left hand accompaniments, exercises and arranging ideas while incorporating technical ease, pattern recognition, beauty tone, expressive playing, improvisation and... other mountainous inspirations.

ADVANCED WITH BRENDA DOR-GROOTReal Blues Harp… and other ways to base great and creative playing on fairly simple structures. While the Blues is mostly based on a very simple chord structure, jazz is often more sophisticated. Understanding, practising, and getting creative with these styles is fun, and will at the same time help you find structure in many other genres and most pieces you’re already playing. This will give you more confidence, and more freedom to perform, phrase and improvise.

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

CELTIC SONGS & HARP WITH KIM ROBERTSONFrom the monks and minstrels to modern-day musicians, there is a long tradition of accompanying the voice with harp. This class will cover a sampling of love songs, lullabies and laments from Scotland, Ireland & Cape Breton, as well as ideas for simple accompaniment patterns on the harp. Besides singing, we will also do some spoken word with harp accompaniment, to explore the tradition of the Bards. For all levels of harp and singing ability.

JOURNEY THROUGH THE GENRES, WITH CHORDS I, IV AND VWith Brenda and Sharlene as your tour guides, this class will explore musical genres such as Blues, folk and popular music while experiencing the force and omnipresence of the chords I, IV and V, and the freedom created by understanding and using them. Good chance you know C, F and G. Now, let’s turn them inside out and get a little more adventurous! Tunes will be learned, chords will be improvised upon, and FUN will be had in this harp class for all levels.

MUSICINSTRUCTORS

KIM ROBERTSON is a prominent performer, arranger, recording artist and pioneer of the Celtic harp in North America. Her playing combines inventiveness & virtuosity with a keen sense of melody & respect for tradition. Classically trained on piano and pedal harp, her discovery of the Celtic harp in the mid-70’s grew into a profound love for the instrument, setting her upon the path of exploration for which she is now widely known.

SHARLENE WALLACE is one of Canada’s most prolific and influential lever harp players. Harpist, recording artist, composer, Sharlene has created six independent CDs featuring many of her compositions which have been influenced by her explorations in Latin, Celtic, Classical and contemporary music. Sharlene tours internationally giving concerts, workshops, masterclasses and adjudications. Sharlene is also on the faculties of York and Wilfred Laurier Universities teaching lever and pedal harps.

BRENDA DOR-GROOT started playing harp at the age of 7 and started studying At the Rotterdam Conservatory when she was only 13, developing a very solid base both technically and musically. A very multifaceted musician, these days one might find her performing jazz in a classy combo, presenting the French impressionists in a church recital, playing the blues at the corner jam, improvising with a bassoonist and a painter or a story teller, grooving with a DJ at a club or corporate event, or teasing tradition as a folk harper with a twist.

CAWS FOR THE NEST CAMPAIGNIn the summer of 2014, Island Mountain Arts launched the CAWS For the Nest Campaign to raise funds to purchase a property in the historic commercial district of Wells in order to run the new Artist-In-Residence program and expand its capacity for arts programming in the Cariboo. The campaign was a success thanks to over 200 individuals donors who donated almost $40,000 and Integris Credit Union that came on board as a partner in the project to provide the financing. Island Mountain Arts is extremely grateful for the amazing support and is excited to maximize the potential of this new 4000

square foot building and adjoining property. Securing the property is really just the beginning of this new endeavour, as we begin to raise funds for renovations and property improvements. Consider a monthly donation to the ongoing CAWS For the Nest Campaign by visiting www.imarts.com.

Your membership or donation helps to support all of the important work that Island Mountain Arts does, increasing our capacity as an organization and our ability to offer quality programming in the arts.
