Well I think it’s fair to say the 2016—2017 Island Newcomer season start-ed off with a bang!
It seems that each year the club membership grows larger and larger but this year membership in Septem-ber surpassed enrollment at the end of last season. You know what that means don’t you? More friends to make and more fun to be had.
The tricky part falls to Lila who as VP is responsible for organizing the monthly gatherings. Having been in her shoes last year I know how chal-lenging it can be to find locations large enough for our group. Lila is being very creative with locations and entertainment but we do face the possibility that one or some of the venues may dictate limiting the number of people attending so I would suggest you sign up as soon as the monthly gathering notices are posted so you don’t lose out.
Another challenge this year has been Stripe, our payment system. Our webmaster, treasurer, membership
and adventures directors have been keeping a close eye on sign ups and payment errors to ensure members are notified of, and receive refunds on, any overpayments. We continue to evaluate the situation and hope to solve the dilemma very soon. In the meantime, rest assured that your club officers and directors are keep-ing a close eye on all transactions and will process refunds quickly should duplicate payments occur.

Vice President’s Message
WELCOME NEWWWWWWCOMERS!
We kicked off our season at Bennies Red Barn
and it was wonderful! We had a total of 235 at-
tendees and Bennies did not even flinch. The
Food and Service was absolutely AMAZING!
The first event I did cut about 26 Newcomers
some slack by allowing them to show up without
registration but this will not be allowed for future
events. The monthly events must be preregis-
tered and completed with payment to be admitted
to the event. If you miss the deadline for registra-
tion we POSSIBLY can get you in with an email
but I recommend signing up ASAP. Since our
group is getting so large, we need to insist on pre-
registration so you can be included in the fun!
Newcomers Hoedown will be October
11th 6-9pm at the Taylor House Pa-
vilion with Southern Soul BBQ and
Line dancing along with a short
presentation for the local Humane Society.
We look forward to seeing you in your Denim, Dia-
monds and Cowboy Boots!
Giddy Up!

Island Adventures
Welcome Fellow Adventurers,
Judee and I wanted to bring new members up to date on the reservation process for Island Adventurers.
In case you have not looked yet, you will find the current years plans under the Upcoming Events on the
front page of our Island Newcomers website. www.islandnewcomers.org. This is not a static link. We
continue to add content from time to time. Our web master has also placed a note on the calendar for
each of these events. We generally post the event and open it for sale about 60 days prior to the event.
In order to book on an adventure once it is open for sale, we heartily recommend that you book right
away as events tend to sell out quickly. When reserving you should get a message during the process
that the event is confirmed and immediately thereafter you should also get a confirmation email. If you
do not, generally the payment did not go thru. You can contact [email protected]
to ask about your status. The space of each adventure is unique to the event, the venue, the transport
and a number of other factors, such as availability. Tours have taken as long as a few weeks to fill or as
quickly as a few hours. If you wish to place yourself on a waitlist please send a note to islandadven-
[email protected] and be sure to indicate the name of the event, the date and your full contact
information. All Adventures are nonrefundable but we do allow replacements via a waitlist if any or you
can check around with other members to fill your spot. You would then settle directly with your replace-
ment and notify us of the name change. We welcome hearing from you as to things you would like to
do. Keep checking in on the upcoming event link as we will add more tours in a few weeks. If you are
interested in helping with particular tours we would love to hear from you. We are not able to accommo-
date walk ups or “go shows” to events. We look forward to loads of fun this year and hope to see you on
an adventure soon.
Best regards,
Susan and Judee, Island Adventures Co-chairs

The word is definitely out that Island Newcomers is the club to join on SSI. We have reached a membership of 320! At the same time last year our numbers totaled 228. Our club is growing rapidly and that is good. It means there are even more opportuni-ties to make new friends – fabulous!
October will be the month to update the directory and send it to the printer. DIRECTORY PHOTOS were taken at the September gathering, but if you were not there, you can submit your own photo by email to the following address: [email protected]. We will also try to get “nonprofessional” photos taken at upcoming events happening before our printers deadline for submissions. All photos need to be submitted by October 15th .
We are excited about the growth in membership and keep in mind, there is always room for “one more”. If you know of anyone residing on SSI or Sea Island for two years or less, please encourage them to visit our website and join our wonderful group. If we can be of assistance in any way, do not hesitate to give us a call at 912-434-9982.

So far 32 people have expressed interest in learning Mah Jongg. Classes start Monday, October 10th,
9:30—11:30 AM at Lord of Life Lutheran Church. A contribution of $1 per person per week is requested to
cover expenses.
As we proceed, I plan to organize evening games for those unavailable during the day, perhaps meeting in
homes.

Bowling 9-Hole & 18-Hole Golf
Nine-Hole Golf—BONNY McDONALD
18-Hole Golf—MIKE McDONALD & PETER McCALL
Mike McDonald and Peter McCall are coordinating 18-hole outings and Bonny McDonald is setting up the 9-hole outings. Normally we play once or twice monthly. The nine hole outings will be on Tuesday afternoons at Sea Palms. The 18 hole outings will be at Sea Palms on Thurs-days with tee times either at 9 or 10 a.m. We also have the opportunity to play 18 hole outings on Jekyll Island.
First Jekyll 18-hole outing—Oct 20 at 9:36 (Pine Lakes course) We welcome all levels of ability. Outings are very relaxed and intended to be fun, meet others, and pro-mote social activity. For 18 hole outings we normally play "best ball/captain's choice" format so that everyone can participate. 9 hole outings are individual stroke. Both golf courses have offered us very reasonable greens fees ($35 incl cart). You'll seldom find better "deals" than these.
Depending on how many of you want to play will determine how frequently we schedule outings. After the 18 hole outings many of us eat lunch at the course. After the 9 hole outings many of us head to the lounge for bev-erages and conversation/fellowship.
Interested in joining? Contact any of us for more information. We’d love to have you play with us.

Bridge will be the third Thursday of the month beginning in October. We will again try to do lunch at
12:30 pm at a restaurant and then play bridge until 3 pm.
Please send me your name, phone number, and e-mail address to [email protected], phone num-
ber is 814-937-0449. Also please choose a month to host. Bridge will run from October to April. I would
love to have a volunteer for each month. I will do kick-off in October.
Being hostess involves finding a restaurant and asking players to choose their lunch preference from the
menu. Hostess will let restaurant know of preferences.
Thanks!

Are you ready for some delicious food at our local restaurants? You will soon be hearing from your host for the month of October. Please respond to your host as to your availability as soon as possi-ble so that they may move forward with confirming the date/time/place for your meal. Though you may have received conflicting information, we will NOT be doing any before dinner socializing/cocktail par-ties for Dining Out this year. We want to make these dining out events as easy as possible for all involved. Many people had requested that this year we have groups of 6 instead of 8; however, we have 134 people signed up for this activity, so re-ducing the group size will not be possible.
In the future, you will be asked to host a Dining Out event. As a host, your responsibilities are to choose a date/time/restaurant and email those details to your group of 6-7 fellow diners (which I will supply to you). Once you know how many people will be joining you, please make reservations in your name. A few days prior to the meal, email those attending to remind them of the details and confirm the name the reservation will be under. And re-member, that your Dining Out event does not have to be in the evening. The choice is yours.
Happy Dining!
Dining Out
Dining In 2016 is off to a good start with 105 members signed up. If you like to cook and to share meals in new friends' homes, join Dining In. You will host guests in your home twice during the year, and other times, be the guest else-where. Cheers to another year of great meals and new friendships.
