Island Spa CatalinaThe Grand Opening of the Island Spa Catalina was held on Wednesday, November 12th. Alison and Geoff Rusack performed the traditional ribbon cutting prior to the guests touring this incredible re-design of the former El Encanto and the new facilities of the island’s first-ever destination resort style spa.

Island Spa Catalina hosted an Open House on November 13th. All in the community were invited. The event was well attended.

The Santa Catalina Island Company, while doing the remodel of this iconic building, took the utmost care to preserve the historical aspects of the 81 year old structure, while creating an oasis of relaxation and pampering within its walls and out to its spectacular bay views. American Leisure, a nationally known company, will operate the facility.

The Island Spa treatment menu. Some of the specialty treatments include:

Sea Oxygen De-Age • Results-orientated anti-aging treatment uses OSEA Products. OSEA was chosen for Island Spa Catalina because it is marine based, vegan, uses several Certified Organic ingredients and the focus ingredient is Gigartina and Undaria Red Algae which is known for its anti-aging properties. Pure white algae, white wine, white tea, and copper peptides blend with marine-based anti-aging serums to visibly brighten skin and help reduce pigmentation. Marine-based ingredients are custom-blended to gently

remove impurities, hydrate and minimize the appearance of fine lines. This 80 minute treatment is a results oriented anti-aging facial. The treatment will minimize the appearance of fine lines, remove impurities, visibly brighten and reduce the appearance of pigmentation on the skin. During the Sea Oxygen De-Age Facial the products are applied with the esthetician’s hands. The facial cleanse is performed incorporating a Clarisonic Brush to deeply remove impurities. An exfoliation treatment is applied to further smooth and refine the skin and a White Algae mask rich in Gigartina Seaweed is applied with a soft, synthetic vegan brush, and finished with moisturizer and sun protection.

Grand Openings

Tone It Up • Body sculpting contouring treatment uses Mio “fit skin for life” products. The Mio philosophy is “Fit skin is strong, smooth, glowing and healthy.” This intense body tightening and toning treatment will focus on areas of concern from cellulite-prone hips to upper arms and chest, with special focus on areas of concern from cellulite-prone hips to upper arms, with special focus on problem areas. An energizing massage combined with a proactive exfoliation will give you a tighter, more toned, fitter feeling body ready for action. This is a very active treatment, which gives instant results and is a staff favorite.

Blend Bar Pedicure • Salt of the Earth products are used, featuring salt harvested from the Great Salt Lake and natural, vitamin-rich grape seed oil-based ingredients with high quality aroma oils for the ultimate handcrafted body product. This spa-inspired treatment begins with your choice of a signature aroma blend selection and booster enhanced serum. A cleansing aroma salt soak is followed by a smoothing exfoliation, deep cleansing kaolin clay mud wrap, whipped body crème massage, and a fire and ice menthol spot massage that ensures total relaxation. Take home a free gift of Whipped Body Crème, compliments of Island Spa Catalina. A choice of four aromas; Succulent Silk, Ocean Calm, Island Citrus and Catalina Breeze, all created for Island Spa Catalina, are offered in each Blend Bar Treatment.

Sage Stone Purification Ritual • Head to toe body treatment using Tara Spa Therapy products. Native American reverence for the Earth inspires this purification ritual which begins with a body mask of corn, clay and oats. A warm restful wrap, along with scallop and foot massage, is followed by a refreshing rain shower rinse. Finally, a full-body massage with warm stones and sage oil deeply penetrating muscles, releasing tension while detoxifying and renewing body and spirit.

In addition to all that the Spa offers, this unique building is also available as an additional venue that can be reserved through the Island Company. Enjoy the dramatic ocean views and relaxing atmosphere. A perfect setting for an intimate wedding ceremony and reception, the Vista Deck offers 1,000 square feet of sweeping views of the harbor and downtown, with room to accommodate up to 50 guests.

The Spa Courtyard is an ideal spot for a cocktail hour or reception. Nestled in the heart of the Spa, the courtyard presents 1,200 square feet of space set around fountains and pools, giving you a relaxing, charming atmosphere to entertain up to 100 guests.

The culinary team is working on a special menu similar to what will be offered at the Descanso Beach Club and will offer appetizers, buffet and full bar service. Depending on the type of event, the Spa can accommodate up to 100 guests.

Yes, We Want A New Vons For Avalon!Another Planning Committee Meeting regarding Von’s new location will be held at 6pm, Wednesday, November 19, at City Hall.

Make every effort to attend and let your voice be heard. Remember this may be the only opportunity for a long time, to have a large new store. It is Von’s decision to build the store on Beacon and should they not get the approval, they may take away the offer for a new store. So consider their proposal very carefully. In addition, Von’s is being purchased and may mean that the new buyer is not interested in building a new store for Avalon.

Yes, we want a new Vons in Avalon! How YOU can voice your support:

• Go to www.NewVonsForAvalon.com 1. View the plans Vons submitted to the Planning Commission and Read why the new Vons needs to be built on Beacon 2. Sign a petition in support of the new Vons 3. Send letters to the Planning Commission and City Council Send SIX letters: One to the Planning Commission and one to EACH member of the City Council. • Spread the word Encourage your employees family and friends to sign the petition and send letters, too!

• Attend the Planning Commission meeting on Wednesday, November 19 at 6pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Mainland OfficesYou may think that having offices on the mainland is something new and different for the Santa Catalina Island Company but it actually is a tradition dating back to 1894.

Wilmington Transportation Company (WTCo.) in San Pedro, belonged to the Banning Brothers before they purchased Santa Catalina Island. While building up the town of Avalon, much of their business was with mainland vendors and the brothers found themselves using WTCo. offices when they were off the island. When Mr. Wrigley purchased the island in 1919, WTCo. was a part of the transaction. Mr. Wrigley continued to use the mainland office whenever necessary. After the Island Company sold WTCo. in 1998, the company continued to have a need for offices “overtown” from personnel interviews to union meetings. Catalina Express, Catalina Conservancy and Island Express Helicopters graciously offered their space when available.

Because of the increase of the use of the overtown offices, it was decided that we needed to lease our own. We now have offices in the Park Plaza at Jamboree Center in Irvine. The following have already relocated or are in the process of relocating to the mainland: Dave Stevenson, Julie Sevilla, Katie Lawler, Carla Dispalatro, Eileen Tumbaga, Kris Wilhelm, Reya Dueñas, Jennifer Milburn, Sierra Caldwell, and Halina Balys. Others will be added as needed.

One of the “outside involvements” here at the company is a prison ministry that Gina Long, Tammie Katin, Jani Eisenhut and Gail Hodge have helped to develop through the Avalon Community Church.

This ministry started with outreach by Jon Burcome, the Worship Pastor at the Avalon Community Church, to a former Avalon resident, Jon Willis, a close friend of Jon Burcombe’s, who is now an inmate at a Colorado prison facility. The group became involved through Jon’s efforts to connect with others at the same facility, particularly those inmates who had little or no outside contact with family or friends. The group started with cards at Christmas, Easter and holidays and that outreach developed into exchanges of letters with several inmates. The group then felt led to sign up to visit inmates-the rules permit a visit with only one individual-and members of the group have now made up to five visiting trips to Colorado. If anyone would like more information about the ministry or would like to volunteer to send cards or letters to an inmate, just contact one of the group. It’s a blessing to be able to offer this contact to those in prison and to share the love of Jesus with them.

September’s cross selling winner was Denny Friedrich with our Zip Line. Denny was getting used to be second runner up but finally received the grand prize of $500.00. Congratulations Denny!

Lupe Sanchez and Todd Wade of Avalon and Jill Conner of Two Harbors all participated in the race on November 8th. Congratulations!

Cheers!

Water ConsumptionOfelia Gonzalez, Lazaro Silva Quezada with the assistance of our incredible Maintenance team have created a very effective and efficient way in monitoring the company’s water usage.

Meter reading began the first Friday in August and has continued every week since. Approximately 70 Commercial (Hotels & Landscaping) and Residential (both full time and seasonal Housing) properties all owned by the Santa Catalina Island Company are being read.

A special spread sheet was created that calculates our daily allotment to weekly and monthly reads. Weekly reports are sent to all supervisors/managers showing water usage and totals. This helps them to be aware of how much water is being used to continue conserving water where ever they can. If we are over one week we can catch up and make sure we are not over the next so that our monthly totals are under the allotted usage.

By reading the meters weekly it helps the company have better control and makes sure we do not exceed our allotment. It also lets us see where we might gain some further reductions.

Our team has been excellent at keeping us under the allotments and gets high praise for having done so.

In support of our non-profit organizations that contribute much to Avalon’s culture and activities, the company discounts venues for functions and always purchases ad space for any of their special events. Search & Rescue has recently received a donation from our company as well.

Money received from the Company and personal donation from Geoff and Alison will go towards a new Search and Rescue vehicle.

Catalina Casino

As we head into the holiday season, we continue to reflect on our year with increased visitation and growth for Catalina Island. we can’t help but ponder the reasons as to why this has been a strong year for all of us. According to the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, we have seen a 20% increase in visitation through september 2014. outside of warm weather, a cleaner bay, new restaurants, activities and facilities—what could have been a contributor to these results? looking at all of the efforts for the island as a whole, we cannot place the success onto one solo occurrence or factor. However when reviewing our contributions, we can consider our aggressive Pr and marketing plan that was put into place—not for just the Island Company and its properties, but for Catalina Island as a whole.

Upon entering 2014, the marketing department set goals with a new year, a clean slate, and a substantial marketing budget in mind. with 22 million people in southern California, we have the ability to penetrate a market that may or may not be aware of Catalina Island, but lacking a reason to visit.

The goals included targeting media audiences critical to increasing business during the shoulder season, pushing a longer length of stay and encouraging repeat visits while establishing other destinations within southern California as our true competitors. we built well-rounded campaigns that hit traditional and non-traditional marketing including digital advertising, print advertising, partnerships, sponsorships, outdoor billboards, radio campaigns & live remotes, a Tv campaign, prize giveaways and social media. we hosted weekly media visits and pitched multiple story angles of Catalina Island, its rich history, and future development.

Highlights included working on in-stadium promotions for Angels baseball, forming partnerships with rEI and Costco, promoting Catalina during lA Kings stanley cup playoffs, creating the love boat to Catalina promotion on JACK FM, hosting Gary bryan and lisa stanley for a live radio remote on K-Earth 101, and working with KFI radio host Tim Conway Jr. on full island coverage and promotions. we received front cover placement on sunset Magazine and have secured many other placements in the lA Times, United Airlines Hemispheres Magazine, American way, thrillist.com, nbClA, AbC news, examiner.com, UT san Diego, and san Diego Magazine, just to name a few.

with a combined $2,000,000 dollars in media spend and advertising value, the year to date Pr and marketing efforts have generated over 83,000,000 advertising impressions and over 160,000,000 in publicity circulation. These are tremendous results for the first year of a growing team, new partners, and a larger budget.

As we begin planning for 2015, we will continue to look for ways to encourage new visits by enhancing the perception of Catalina Island and pushing our message out to the 22,000,000 southern California residents. we still have many wonderful stories to tell and experiences to share as we battle for the attention of an over-stimulated population of so-Cal locals.

October Staff Meeting at Two HarborsOn Thursday, October 16, the monthly staff meeting had a new twist. At 8:00 AM everyone met on the Green Pier and boarded a boat. Destination: Two Harbors. The gracious Two Harbor staff greeted us on arrival, gave everyone a few minutes to get their “land legs” back and then proceeded to give us an excellent tour of Two Harbors and it’s many improvements. First we visited the beautifully re-modeled General Store. There is a great clothing and gift section leading up to the much expanded grocery and sundries section. We learned that the top selling product at the store was a cone of ice cream. We then moved over to the Harbor Reef restaurant where Buffalo Milks is their top seller.

We were able to view the boat yard and supply area and housing units to see how improved and organized it has become.

We then proceeded to walk across the isthmus to Cat Harbor, after first turning up the hill and getting a wonderful tour of the Banning House Lodge.

The group was then taken out towards Ballast Point and were served a wonderful lunch on the deck of a former yacht club. The weather was perfect and ocean conditions were calm. Following the Staff Meeting, we adjourned back to the boat to return to Avalon.

NewsworthyIt was announced this October that the University of Southern California has signed a long-term lease with the Santa Catalina Island Company to operate the Inn on Mt. Ada. The Island Company will assume management and operations of the historic Inn as of December 1, 2014. The Inn will close for the months of December and January for minor renovations and reopen in early 2015. Beginning Monday, November 17, 2014, please call the Santa Catalina Island Company at 877.778.9395 for information or reservation for the Inn.

This month Mr. John Gabriel Beckman is being honored by being inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame. A much deserved tribute to a very talented artist and a great friend to the Santa Catalina Island Company.

Although John Gabriel Beckman, designer of the Casino Murals, passed away in 1989, he continued to be an important part of Avalon’s history right until the end when in 1986, he helped oversee the design of his Casino mermaid into the tile mural she was always meant to be.
