Here we are celebrating the 17th anniversary of the Isle of Wight

Walking Festival! We have a great programme packed with fantastic walks, some of the old favourites and some new and exciting ones to whet your appetite, with over 200 walks to choose from. Once again there is not excuse not to hit those footpaths and take in the stunning views of our beautiful Island.

The Isle of Wight always extends a very warm welcome to its visitors, and continues to be an extremely popular destination for walkers. Located just a few miles from the mainland and only two hours from the centre of London, it is the ultimate destination for a walking break. Over half of the Island is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its 60 miles of dramatic and breathtaking Heritage Coastline, unspoilt countryside and over 500 miles of well-maintained and signposted footpaths; the Island has long been a source of inspiration to visitors.

For a taste of this, step back in time and follow in the footsteps of the Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Hook, John Milne or Jimi Hendrix. Or stroll in the most enchanted and historic gardens of Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s much-loved residence at East Cowes. Or simply step out on our children’s walks, dinosaur walks, walks from rails, Ramblers walks, exploration walks, history walks, nature walks, speed dating, foodie walks, Nordic walking, adventures and dawn chorus walks.

Our walking festival boasts 16 days of unbeatable exciting, informative and healthy walks in May, and another four days in October. For 2015 organisers have once again compiled a full programme of walks for all abilities, from toddlers to the more mature, from ghost to coast, hikers to casual walkers. You need to join us on your mission to get t and healthy, and there couldn’t be a better place than on the stunning Isle of Wight. All walks are led by very knowledgeable and popular leaders who share their stories and history of the Island.

TAKE A WALK IN OUR GARDENWherever you wander

on the Island, you will nd hundreds of acres of beautiful scenery providing private getaways and scenic hikes.

A myriad of paths will guide you through beautiful woodland carpeted with bluebells in the spring. Or in autumn you can wrap up warm and see the leaves change colour. Wandering among ancient forests you might, if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of a red squirrel.

Garden lovers will not be disappointed as there are a wide range of lovely gardens and parks in fabulous positions with superb collections of tender and exotic plants. The Island’s gardens and parks come in all shapes and sizes, from formal Georgian landscapes to traditional Victorian parks with bandstands and tea gardens.

Ventnor Botanic Garden is a nineteenth century creation and its climate is more akin to the Mediterranean, it holds the warmth from its southerly aspect so well that, combined with the moderating inuence of the sea, frost is rarely known, making the garden unrivalled for its collection of subtropical plants grown unprotected out of doors.

Surrounding an attractive Elizabethan manor house, the enchanting National Trust garden at Mottistone is full of surprises, with shrub-lled banks, hidden pathways and colourful herbaceous borders. Other Island gems include

the Princess Beatrice Garden at Carisbrooke Castle, the miniature conifers and shrubs at Godshill Model Village and the peaceful gardens at Quarr Abbey.

Island landscapes have long been admired and captured by England’s greatest artists and an exhibition of works by Turner and other artists (including Thomas Rowlandson and Charles Tomkins) at Shanklin Chine depicts many pictures and historic Isle of Wight landscapes and coastal scenes; these are epitomised by Shanklin Chine, which has been visited and admired for its wild natural beauty for nearly 200 years.

“It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot” – such were the words of Queen Victoria after her rst visit to Osborne and few members of the royal family have been quite as enthusiastic about their garden as the Queen and her consort, Prince Albert. At Osborne they were able to indulge their desire for a fashionable garden, drawing inspiration from the gardens of Europe. It was also a place where they could experience life away from public scrutiny.

The Warrior Trail is a six-mile family-friendly walk taking you to the places where Warrior and General Jack Seely lived. See Brook Beach where Warrior trained, Brook House and Mottistone Manor where the Seelys lived, Mottistone Church where Jack Seely was buried and Brook Church with its lifeboat connections – Jack Seely was coxswain of Brook lifeboat.

Warrior, the war horse and Jack Seely spent three years together ghting in World War One. Incredibly both survived the numerous battles they fought. Warrior became known as the horse the Germans could not kill. He was a celebrity after the war with visits from Queen Mary and Winston Churchill.

Warrior died in 1941 at the exceptional age of 33 yrs. The Times had an obituary for “the horse the Germans could not kill.” Like Jack, he was fearless and gentle. WARRIOR: THE WAR HORSE

The Ramblers Donate-a-Gate scheme is still operating successfully and is extremely popular. Are you looking for a novel and inspiring way to:• mark the life and passing of a loved one;• remember a loyal family pet;• commemorate a special event;• promote your organisation.

For lovers of walking and the countryside a commemorative footpath gate is an opportunity to set up a

memorial that will provide practical ease of access to fellow walkers for years to come.

The Isle of Wight Ramblers and the Isle of Wight Council Rights of Way department, supported by our local National Trust have established the footpath ‘Donate a Gate’ Scheme. An individual donation of £460 will nance a new footpath gate incorporating a locally engraved commemorative oak plaque at a suitable location on the Island.

In particular by identifying suitable stretches of footpath to be wholly converted to gates, we are improving access to the countryside for those people who cannot easily negotiate stiles. You can contact the scheme organiser to nd out where current projects are underway.

To make an application to the scheme contact:Mr Mike Slater, Isle of Wight Ramblers ‘Donate a Gate’ Organiser, 10 The Sheilings, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, PO40 9LL Tel: (01983) 752997 Email: [email protected]

WALKING WORKSIf you nd it dicult to get active, why not start walking? It's really easy to get started, you don't need any special equipment – and best of all it counts towards your recommended amount of physical activity.

Walking can improve your health, your happiness and, if you join one of our groups, it will give you the chance to explore the outdoors, get to know your local area and meet new people.

Don’t save a good walk for clearing your head after a particularly bad day. Walk regularly. Invest in your long-term health now and you’ll see the dierence that walking can make to your mind, your body and your social life. Walking in a group is a great way to start and stay motivated, so nd your local Walking for Health scheme and get started now.

WALKING JUST ONE A MILE A DAY COULD SAVE LIVESThe latest statistics show that walking around one mile, or for just 20 minutes a day, at a moderate pace (approximately 3mph), is a simple and eective way to reduce prostate patients’ risk of dying by 30 per cent, whilst for those with breast cancer it can be as high as 40 per cent.

For many of our walkers we know that going on their local health walks, meeting new people and exploring their local area has helped them cope with some of the debilitating side eects of cancer such as depression, fatigue, anxiety and weight changes.

ISLE OF WIGHT HEALTH WALKSCome along to a regular health walk and ‘walk your way to health’ For a taster of the Isle of Wight’s health walks, check the Walking Festival programme and join in. The walks are organised at various Island locations throughout the year

and led every week by experienced walk leaders, all short walks are fairly level and you can walk at your own pace. For full details of Health Walks log onto www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walknder/south-east/isle-wight-health-walks

WALKING THE WAY TO HEALTH

Ever feel like it'd be nice to get out and

about more often? Get a little more fresh air in your lungs? Be a bit more active? Lots of us wish we did more exercise. We know it's good for us. And we know our health is important. But it can be easy to nd excuses for not actually getting out there and doing it.there and doing it.

“The gym is not for me.”

“There’s not enough time.”

“My back isn’t up to it these days.” “It’s no fun.”

Following a successful pilot project in 2013, the easy walking programme Acorn Steps, based on the Isle of Wight, is now available for those interested in doing more walking, but who lack the condence to get out by themselves. This free programme, for adults and accompanied children, oers six weeks of gentle walks at a pace and gradient to suit the individual. Small groups, usually between two and ten participants, are led by experienced walk leaders from The Footprint Trust. All sta are DBS-checked, rst aid trained and are experienced in working with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.Potential clients have an informal initial assessment, to nd out what their needs and requirements may be, then walks are designed which are suitable for them. They are matched with people with similar requirements, so need never feel they are having to 'run to catch up'.New for this year are very gentle walks for people with long-term conditions who may

wish to walk, but need to take it very easy. Please contact Acorn Steps for further details.Last year, most people who started the programme were doing almost no exercise at all. But by the end of the course, the group walked four miles. To join Acorn Steps, it is expected that:• people will be able to get themselves to the

starting point of the walk;• people will commit to the full six weeks of

the programme. People can be professionally referred, or join up themselves.

HOW MANY STEPS DO YOU TAKE IN A DAY?

Maybe you’ve heard about the recent guidelines to take 10,000 steps a day? How far is this anyway?

The average person’s stride length is approximately 2½ feet so it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk a mile. If you take 10,000 steps, you’ve walked nearly ve miles!

A sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. For these people, increasing their daily steps by 500 a day will gradually move them towards a less sedentary, healthier lifestyle. Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to keep track of your steps each day.1,000 to 2,000 = Could do better2,000 to 3,000 = Average3,000 to 4,000 = Not bad5,000 to 8,000 = Getting warmer10,000+ = Excellent!

AUTUMN WALKING WEEKEND23 TO 26 OCTOBER 2015

Page 78: Isle of Wight Walking Festival 2015

78

Health benetsGiven the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fullling life into old age.

It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:• up to a 35 per cent lower risk of coronary

heart disease and stroke; • up to a 50 per cent lower risk of type

2 diabetes; • up to a 50 per cent lower risk of colon cancer; • up to a 20 per cent lower risk of breast cancer; • a 30 per cent lower risk of early death; • up to an 83 per cent lower risk of

osteoarthritis; • up to a 68 per cent lower risk of hip fracture; • a 30 per cent lower risk of falls (among older

adults);• up to a 30 per cent lower risk of depression;• up to a 30 per cent lower risk of dementia.

What counts?Moderate-intensity activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate, you breathe a little heavier and feel warmer but are still able to talk. One way to tell if you’re working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but you can’t sing the words to a song.

Examples of moderate-intensity activities are:• walking fast; • water aerobics;• riding a bike on level ground or with few hills;• playing doubles tennis;• pushing a lawn mower;

Daily chores such as shopping, cooking or housework don’t count towards moderate-intensity activity. This is because the eort needed to do them isn’t hard enough to get your heart rate up.

Top health benets of walkingCan walking really be the way to weight loss? Can walking be a route to improved tness? All the evidence says yes – becoming a regular walker can help you lose excess body fat and keep it o, reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke, keep your joints and muscles mobile and supple and give you a more positive outlook.

If you get involved in a regular walking routine, you can expect the following positive changes to your body:• It can have a positive eect on your mental

wellbeing.• Less body fat.• Greater muscle tone in the hips, thighs,

calves and buttocks.• Less risk of back pain.• Greater eciency to burn fat.• Fewer aches and pains due to increased

mobility.• Better digestion.• Improved circulation.• Greater resilience to stress.• Less anxiety and depression.• Improved cholesterol prole.• Better control of insulin.• Stronger bones and more mobile joints.• A heart that can pump out more blood with

every beat.• Walking gives you space to think.• You can walk just about anywhere.• Walking can be done at any time.• Can lower blood pressure.• Improved sleep.• Fewer colds and other infections.• Stronger respiratory system, so you can take

in or expel more air with fewer breaths.• Enhanced posture.• Walking is cost-eective –you’ll shed pounds

while saving cash.
