ISO 15118AN ANALYSIS ON THE OVERLAP WITH AND INFLUENCE ON OCPI
ISO 15118 in a nutshellUse cases
• Smart charging
• Plug & Charge functionality
• Improved security
• Automated billing
• V2G charging
•Wireless charging
• Automated connection devices
Available in 15118-20 release, expected end of 2020
ISO 15118 in a nutshellUse cases
• EVTargetEnergyRequest• EVMaxEnergyRequest• EVMinEnergyRequest
• EVMaxChargePower• EVMaxChargeCurrent• EVMinChargeCurrent
• EVPresentActivePower• EVPresentReactivePower
• EVSETargetFrequency• EVSETargetActivePower• EVSETargetReactivePower
Some of these values would be very valuable additions to the existing state of the art of smart charging
ISO 15118 in a nutshellPlug and charge
With ISO 15118, an electric vehicle will be able to identify itself at a charging station, using a unique identifier and certificate.Much like a mobile phone identifies itself at a cell tower, using a unique identifier and certificate, contained on a SIM-card.
Billing is handled in the background via a Mobility Operator1, similar to what telecom operators like Vodafone or T-Mobile do.

1A synonym to Mobility Operator (MO) is E-Mobility Service Provider (EMSP)

In order to ensure Confidentiality, Integrity and Authenticity, ISO 15118 relies on symmetric encryption (via ECDH) and asymmetric encryption via Public Key Infrastructure Certificates
* For demonstration purposes, this
infrastructure representation has been simplified

More OEMs are (allegedly) working on support of 15118, but currently these four models are the only ones that support 15118*
State of the marketEuropean charge stations that support ISO 15118
• Ebee (Germany) (uses Bender controller)• Ensto (Finland) (uses Bender controller)• Webasto (Germany) (uses Bender controller)• Wenar (Poland) (uses Bender controller)• Wirelane GmbH (Germany) (uses Bender controller)• PION Technology AG (Germany) (unknown)• Stöhr GmbH (Germany) (unknown)
There are to date no major charging station manufacturers in Europe that support ISO 15118. Our market analysis shows the priority for this at charging station manufactures is low, due to the lack of vehicles that support ISO 15118.
Conclusions• Supported by virtually no EV yet
• Supported by virtually no operator yet
• Technology at a too early stage to say anything about it
• The overlap with OCPI is limited
We have taken it into consideration as part of this project but given the many uncertainties, it is currently not clear to include it in OCPI. Our advice is to keep an eye on the development of ISO 15118.
