ISO 50001

Energy Management

Motivation and benefits

The purpose of this international standard consists in en-

abling organizations to establish systems and processes

that are necessary to improve energy performance, including

energy efficiency, use of energy and energy consumption.

The systematic approach is provided by the organization’s

energy management system. Based on energy policy and

the definition of the objectives and targets, action plans will

be established, implemented and reviewed. According to the

Austrian Energy Agency the average energy saving potentials

are estimated to amount to 10 to 20 per cent.

The standard is based on the common elements of ISO man-

agement system standards in order to guarantee a high de-

gree of compatibility, particularly with the ISO 9001 and ISO

14001 standards. It is based upon the continual improve-

ment process, which is known as the PDCA Cycle (Plan-Do-

Check-Act), and integrates energy management in the orga-

nization’s daily business.

Objectives and targets

Using this international standard helps to reduce greenhouse

gas emissions as well as other environmental impacts and

decreases energy costs through systematic energy manage-

ment.

Target group

Energy management can be established by companies and

organizations irrespective of size or sector. In particular for

companies requiring a high amount of energy the standard

offers comprehensive systematic requirements and instruc-

tions for successful implementation. The standard enables

small and medium-sized enterprises to take the first steps

towards environmental management with a focus on the par-

tial field of energy. As for companies with an existing environ-

mental management, the standard can help to emphasize on

the environmental factor of energy even more.

Requirements

Among other things, the term energy includes electricity, fu-

els, steam and vapour, compressed air and renewable ener-

gies. The term of use of energy is seen very comprehensively,

and comprises e.g. lighting, ventilation, heating, cooling, pro-

cess heat, transport, processes or production lines.

ISO 50001 follows the principles of ISO 14001 very strongly.

Differences to ISO 14001 can be found in the following

elements:

 energy performance

 contents of energy policy

presentation of functions of top management and

operational energy managers

deployment of an energy planning process

 conducting an energy related assessment

designing new and changed facilities, equipment,

systems and processes

The requirements are basically broken down into:

 general requirements

 management responsibility

 energy policy

 energy planning

 introduction and implementation

 review

 management review

ISO 50001Energy Management

The organization will have to establish the scope and balance

boundaries of its energy management system. Top manage-

ment will have to nominate a management representative.

Energy related assessment serves to analyze the use of ener-

gy, identify the energy sources, review the prior and present

energy consumption and estimate the future needs. In this

process, the areas with the highest energy consumption will

be identified. Energy policy includes commitment to contin-

ual improvement of energy performance. For measuring and

monitoring energy performance, adequate energy perfor-

mance indicators will be defined.
