What is an Energy management system?
An Energy Management System (EnMS) is by definition a management system that provides a framework for managing and continually improving your organisations policies, processes and procedures.
Energy, in the context of organisational use, can be defined as the direct consumption of fuel (Gas, Oil, etc) and indirect consumption of fuel (Electricity) required to operate.
So bring the definitions together and an Energy Management System is a series of policies, processes and procedures to manage operational energy use.

• ISO 50001 is a systematic target-driven approach. Don’t wait for new legislation: strengthen your approach and organisation now – be ready for any future.
• Focus on embedding an ‘integrity’ mindset rather than a ‘compliance’ one: look beyond the narrow legal parameters to provide greater asset value to your organisation. Early 50001 case studies identify £ savings are real.
• Focus on the long term with strategy, but also on the means to demonstrate results in the short term. ISO 50001 fits in with current initiatives, HEFCE & P&P Green League
