I woke up recently and felt a chill in the crisp morn-ing air. As I lamented the fact that the end of mysummer bike rides was near, I realized that itmeans I will soon be spending more time onthe racquetball court…and that is a good thing!

Over the years I have accumulated some of theold ISRA records, and they are stored in mybasement. I recently found an article written in March 1978 by some ISRAmembers entitled “101 Excuses for Losing Your Match.” It is pretty humorous, and as I read the excuses, I realized I probably used a couple of them along theway. Here are a few:

1. I’m not used to playing on a glass court.2. I play better doubles than singles.3. The floor was slippery.4. I drank too much.5. I could’ve beat him but I wasn’t really trying.6. I was upset that I wasn’t seeded.7. I didn’t know I was playing a lefty.

I certainly admit that I have used one that is not on the list: “I was the tourna-ment director!”

On a more serious note, there may be a few modern-day excuses that couldbe used for “not participating in tournaments”:

1. The event was sanctioned (non-sanctioned).2. Nobody was signed up on R2, so I didn’t sign up.3. Keith Minor (e.g.) is signed up, so I might as well not play.4. I don’t like ____________. (enter club name or individual name here)5. The ISRA is elitist. (REALLY?????)

We are getting to a point where if the players don’t come together to supportracquetball, there soon may not be any courts/events/players at all. The sportis too small to support all of the current “factions”; everyone has to figure outhow to work together. People think that a $50 USAR membership is too high.If you break that membership cost down, the fee is 13¢ per day. For that youget secondary accident insurance coverage, rankings, eNewsletters and Rac-quetball magazine. You also get a National Rules Commissioner, a Referee Cer-tification program, US National and Junior National teams, and a website thattracks the History of Racquetball, the Hall of Fame and more. Most importantly, you invest in the future of racquetball.

From the Editor:When you get occupied and have to put something on the back burner, the job just gets bigger and bigger.Voila, a 40-page newsletter that covers January through August 2012! I hope you enjoy it, and please knowthat we’ll get back on schedule going forward. If you have any suggestions to improve this newsletter, Iwould appreciate hearing from you. Please email me at [email protected].

P.S. Please go to page 38 and print out, in color, the ISRA 2012-2013 Calendar for planning and quick refer-ence. We hope to see you competing in many events this next season!

From the PRESIDENTcontinued from previous page

Historically, sanctioned ISRA tournaments paid a fee of $1 per player to the state organization for sanctioning. We havedispensed with that fee. For only $35 for a one-day event, or $75 for a multiple-day event, a tournament can be sanc-tioned. Directors can get the benefit of R2 for setting up the tournament and provide the event and the players withsecondary insurance coverage. Players can enter via R2 and their match results will go into the national ranking sys-tem. If the $50 membership fee is too high, players can purchase a $10 Limited Event Membership for the weekendtournament.

I am a businessperson by occupation. If I were a manufacturer of racquetball equipment, I would be concerned aboutthe future of my business. Large membership-based organizations like USAR and the ISRA help the manufacturerskeep track of how many people are actively playing the sport, give them vehicles for advertising, and help draw morepeople into the sport. If I were a club owner, I would be worried about how much space is dedicated to racquetball.Clinics, tournaments and travel leagues would make me feel better about my investment in court space.

As for the ISRA being “elitist” or “exclusive,” I see nothing but a very small group of volunteers trying to make thingsbetter for the players. Board members put in a lot of time running events and travel league, creating newsletters, etc.We could achieve so much more if players with business, organizational, communication, fundraising and technicalskills stepped up to become involved. We are always looking for more volunteers to join the Auxiliary Board and pitchin at tournaments…for a webmaster who can lead the way to a fresh ISRA site…for someone to contribute in the roleof Rules and Referee Clinics coordination…for someone to manage social media…and for members who will encour-age others to spend 13¢ per day to join the ISRA. Please contact me at [email protected] or Cheryl Kirk [email protected] for more information.

See you on the courts,

Laurel

ISRA Board Elections were held, with the following results: Cheryl Kirk is Vice President, Michelle Halverson was re-elected Treasurer, Geoff Peters was named North Zone VP and John O’Donnell, Jr. is South Zone VP. The followingfour individuals were re-elected to the Governing Board: Patrice Calvi, Steve Goodman, Joe Silius and Lynne Weisbart.

Samuel Gomez...... lives in Peoria with his wife Leora. He is an actuary for a life insur-ance company.

How long have you been playing and what influenced you tostart?I have been playing racquetball for five years and my home club isLandmark Racquet & Health Club in Peoria. One of my best friendsand I were looking for a good cardio activity in college, so we de-cided to start playing racquetball. It didn’t take long to fall in lovewith the sport. I began playing tournaments in the latter part of2009. For the first year, I played only doubles. However, after playingin several competitive leagues at Landmark, I felt more confidentabout my game. My first singles tournament was last year at theLandmark March Invitational, and I won in my division. After thatwin, I ventured out of Peoria and starting playing in Chicago.

What are your goals in racquetball? My goal for this year is to continue to get better and play in asmany tournaments as possible. I also would like to devote moretime to the sport and perhaps start a travel league in Central Illinois.

What makes you love this sport? The greatest aspect about this sport is the proximity and openness that all players have. This is one of the few sportswhere someone like me, just beginning in this sport, can talk to higher-level players and share experiences. Open andseasoned players are always willing to help and provide tips to players who are just starting out.

Means to me

What was your most memorablemoment in racquetball?Winning in my division at the Land-mark Invitational last year.

What is one thing you would liketo do that you have not done yet?I would like to see Angel Falls (tallestwaterfall in the world, located inVenezuela).

Samuel Gomez cont. from previous page

What would you like your racquetballfriends to know about you?I am also an avid golfer, and my brotherand I created two yearly tournamentsfor friends and family. We play one inthe spring in Peoria and the other inChicago in the fall.

What is your philosophy on life?Always do your best, think of ways ofdoing things better, and remember thathard work and commitment always payoff.

Jordan Kahn while visiting cousins. I played for fun inhigh school and college but didn’t reallypick up the game or understand therules until I worked at the Sky HarborClubs in Highland Park and Northbrook.Watching other top players and practic-ing hours a day, I became a very goodplayer in just a few months. The clubowner asked if I could help teach newplayers, and my racquetball career be-gin.

What are your goals in racquetball? To play racquetball for fun and friendlycompetition, injury free, as long as Ican. To inspire new players into tryingracquetball and getting their friends andfamily to play.

What would you like to do thatyou have not done yet?Organize all my racquetball ideasinto a comprehensive website.

What would you like your racquet-ball friends to know about you?I have been lucky to meet somewonderful people while hosting sev-eral adult racquetball Challenge Mix-ers in the Northern suburbs. I wasgiven the opportunity to create ayouth racquetball program that hadover 130 weekly students, including60 pre-school students at the NorthSuburban YMCA in Northbrook, IL,between 1988 and 1995.

What is your philosophy on life?Treat others with dignity, under-standing and respect. Things aren’talways what they seem. Never As-sume. Someone always has itworse off than you. Don’t take any-thing too seriously. Racquetball. It’sjust a game.

Editor’s Note: Jordan Kahn, an Illi-nois player and instructor for over30 years, is currently fighting (andbeating) a rare illness. Send goodthoughts his way, and read on forJordan’s history and perspective onracquetball and on life!

Tell us about yourself…I was born in 1957 at Highland ParkHospital. My father, Gene, coachedlittle league sports and played soft-ball and tennis several times a week.Renee, my mom, played social ten-nis. My two-year-older brother Rickmarried his high school sweetheartNanci and lives in Scottsdale, AZ.My sister Beth, five years younger, has four children and could beat ev-eryone in basketball as a kid. I havetaught racquetball at most of theracquetball clubs in the NorthernSuburbs. For the past few years I’veenjoyed volunteering at the High-land Park Hospital, which inspiresme to become a better person.

How long have you been playingand what influenced you to start?I was hooked at the age of 12when I first played racquetball atthe St. Louis Park JCC in Minnesota

What makes you love this sport? It’s fun and great exercise. You caneven play and exercise alone. Simple tolearn and easy to adjust to lower leverparticipants.

What was your most memorable mo-ment in racquetball? The time one of my 3-year old pre-school group students finally hit a goodserve after practicing serves for twoweeks. He was so excited, he had an“accident” right there on the court!

We had a great 2011-2012 season with many skilled Juniors coming up through the ranks and a number of beginnerswho are quickly learning the game. This year we had a group of players in the 13-to-16 year age group and a numberof players in the 9-to-12 year age group. We expect next year to transition many of our advanced players into playingin the Adult divisions as well as continuing to play in the Junior age divisions.

Tournament Participation was extensive in 2012. We had a number of Juniors participate in the following tournamentsand clinics throughout the season in both Junior and Adult divisions: a lot of good racquetball, camaraderie andhappy faces. A special thanks to all our juniors for their participation as referees in tournaments. It’s great to see ourracquetball community welcome them into the sport.

This year the TJ Ferro Scholarship Award was earnedby Nate Goodwin from Wheaton, IL. He hasplayed with our Juniors the past two years and heis a fine young man. We had over 15 applicantsthis year and unfortunately could award only onewinner. Nate’s community service activities were akey in his earning the award.

Player ProfileBasilio Salazar IV has less than a year of racquetballplaying experience. Those closest to him know him as‘Chili’. Basilio joined the Junior Team Illinois (JTI) pro-gram where he learned the basic mechanics of thegame. Basilio, along with the other JTI players, re-ceives racquetball instruction for 45-60 minutes fromone of the trainer/coaches and then the junior playerscompete against each other for the last hour. Basiliohas competed locally in Illinois along with traveling toMissouri and twice to Wisconsin He has already wonseveral junior divisions. When Basilio is not playingracquetball, you will either find him avidly training with his travel soccer team, Heat United, or riding his snowmobile orATV in Wisconsin. Basilio is an Honor Roll Student and is truly a great junior participant in racquetball.

2012/2013 SeasonWe are already looking to the upcoming 2012/2013 sea-son with great anticipation. We practiced three days aweek this season and will continue to do so next sea-son. Landmark Racquet & Health Club, Peoria, ILJune 8-9, 2012Tournament Directors – Mike Vicary and JoAnn Wickwire

Once again, Landmark Racquet & Health Club was the site of the 8th Annual Peoria Racquet for the Cure event. Thisyear we drew 52 participants from all over the state of Illinois (and a few from outside as well) joining us for anotherfun-filled, competition-driven and high-spirited event that was all for a great cause: raising funds for Susan G. Komenfor the Cure. We offeredmultiple divisions of Men’s,Women’s, and MixedDoubles, that began Fridayevening and continued thenext day. Saturday con-cluded with a banquet, awards presentation, danc-ing the night away to a DJ,and bidding on various si-lent auction baskets rang-ing from chocolates to rac-quetball gear.

We’ll donate a total of$3,500 to Komen this year,bringing the eight-year to-tal raised to over $55,000.

Thank you to everyonewho participated in thisevent, and we hope to seeyou in Peoria again nextyear!

Winter arrived with a vengeance onJanuary 12th but did not hamper thestart of the 23rd Women’s Senior/Mas-ters Racquetball tournament inSarasota. While O’Hare InternationalAirport was canceling 500+ outboundflights on Thursday afternoon, all of thecompetitors from Illinois were alreadyin Florida getting ready for some toughcompetition.Ninety-one competitorsfrom 19 states participated, including17 from Team Illinois.

The ladies participated in the annualFun Doubles and raised $475 forRacquet for the Cure.Raffle prizes weredonated by Wilson and RacquetballGirl, and anyone donating to Racquetfor the Cure was entered in the raffle. The player’s meeting took place at theclub right after the fun doubles.Theplayers received their packets with theirtournament match schedule, goodies from local busi-nesses, water bottles, Wilson pink Hope racquetball balls, and best of all, beautiful purple polar fleece jackets em-

broidered with the WSMRA logo. After the meeting thewomen spent some time catching up with friends from allaround the country.

Play began the next morning with break-fast, lunch and evening hospitality providedby local restaurants. The matches weregrouped back to back so the participantscould enjoy the warm and sunny weatherduring their free time. For the first time inthe tournament’s 23 years, two clubs wereused for the event so a shuttle traveled be-tween The Bath & Racquet Club and theSarasota YMCA. Tournament DirectorsChad (aka Brad) Bailey, Kathy Trotter andJudy Arnold enjoyed the able assistance ofJean Trimble, Susan Pfahler, Renee Fishand Bob Kulscar both at the Bath & RacquetClub as well as at the YMCA, keeping thematches on time, managing the silent auc-tion and making sure there were plenty ofrefreshments. The courts at both clubs hadfull glass back walls so it was easy to cheerthe players on and witness some truly awe-some racquetball.

As usual, Saturday night was party time atthe banquet, held at the Bentley Resort Ho-

tel.It was a special banquet as the membersvoted on a new Board member for the firsttime in over ten years.Vickey Utter hadstepped down prior to the tournament.JeanHalahan and Beth Sacco were up for the “cov-eted” position.Jean won the election, becom-ing the youngest Board member. Those bid-ding on items at the silent auction found out ifthey “won” and picked up their valuables.Nearly $1,400 was raised and donated to theWSMRA operating account, USAR CollegiateScholarship Fund and the Rapha House, an or-ganization operating in Cambodia devoted toending human trafficking, bonded labor andthe sexual exploitation of children.

Competition was tough but eventually the fol-lowing winners, 1st, 2nd, 3rd or semi-finalists,in that order, were awarded a unique Florida-themed, local Sarasota artist-designed trophyfrom Cabbage Palm Glass.Illinois received kudos to Illinois for having thesecond highest number of competitors (17) inthe tourney (Florida was first).Four Illinois play-ers made it to the semifinals of the 60+ agegroup after six or seven pool play matches. So here is how the Illinois players fared:

45+ B/C Julianne Valentino (semifinalist)55+ B/C Cheryl Kirk (2nd place), Mary Crambes (semifinalist)60+ Nancy Kronenfeld (1st place), Kathy Ruzycki (2nd place), Donna Heinzl and Joan Vande Kieft (semifinalists)70+ Pauline Kelly (2nd place)80+ Lola Markus (1st place)

The WSMRA Board members and players express their thanks to the local organizing committee, to Wilson and ChrisEvon for their endless generosity, and to the tournament sponsors who continue to help make this event a success andthe best racquetball tournament for women! Whether or not you made it to Florida, book next January for the 24th An-nual WSMRA Nationals at The Maverick Club in Arlington, Texas, January 18-20, 2013.Details can be found atwww.wsmra.com.

Team Illinois players (13 men/5 women) traveled to theWest Coast in May to compete at Ektelon Nationals along-side 541 others. For the first time, doubles divisions (al-though not designated as national championship play)were incorporated into the event to provide extra courttime for both domestic and international players. Happily, the Meridian Club’s 22 courts provided more than enoughspace to accommo-date.

Below is a recap ofsome of the high pointsand, of course, Team Il-linois results...
