Protective Edge - Ground Operation

Ground Operation Background

- During the operation Israel undertook substantial efforts to de-escalate the situation, still Hamas has refused to cease its

firing of rockets and continues to do so indiscriminately towards Israeli civilians.

- Hamas has on a number of occasions attempted to penetrate Israel through underground tunnels, by sea and by air in order

to conduct terrorist attacks.

- Offensive underground tunnels used for instigating terror attacks are a major factor threatening Israel’s security on the Gaza

border.

- The ground operation is intended inter alia to uncover and destroy tunnels coming into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Operational Objectives

1. Ensuring the security of the State of Israel.

2. Ensuring the security of the Gaza border and its surroundings.

3. Inflicting severe damage to Hamas and other terror organizations military infrastructure.

4. Damaging and neutralizing the offensive tunnel infrastructure.

5. Reducing the risk of attacks on the Israeli home-front.

Mission and Main Risks

- The IDF Ground Forces will enter into the Gaza Strip, damage the military capabilities of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other

terror organizations and neutralize offensive tunnels infrastructure.
