This year, thefocus of community service will be on local animal shelters. Amotivat ional videotaped message will be available on theISRC website for students to view in the morning. ~The Inst itute for Parents of Preschool Children Who areDeaf or Hard of Hearing is being held at the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville,Illinois, June 8-13, 2014 . The Inst itute brings togetherfamilies from all over the State with the purpose of teachingthem about hearing and deafness. Some of the topicsdiscussed by experts in the field of deafness include helpingchildren learn speech and language, cochlear implants andhearing aids and discipline of a young child who is deaf andmany other topics.

Children at tending the Inst itute are seen by a visionspecialist , speech-language pathologist , psychologist ,teacher of the deaf, audiologist and other specialists. One ofthe best outcomes of the Inst itute is that families meetother families of young children with hearing loss and findthey are not alone.

The part icipants are teamedby age groups and compete in team sports (such as soccer,basketball, volleyball) as well as individual sports (such astrack and field, swimming and bowling). Theyhave a great staff and volunteers who are eager to workwith the mission of the Deaf Youth Center. The program iscentered around American Sign Language yet they alsoprovide voice interpretat ion for both students and parentsinvolved. The Deaf Youth Center meets each month on thethird Thursday and the program is free. The program is opento youth, their siblings, parents, and friends (upon registeringfor DYC). Disability Justice Mentoring Collective is seeking new youth toparticipate

The Disability Just ice Mentoring Collect ive (DJMC) ofAccess Living is seeking new youth to part icipate in thisgreat program. DJMC provides a unique opportunity foryouth with disabilit ies, ages 13 to 18, to receive guidanceand support from a mentor who cares about disabilityjust ice. We current ly have an amazing mentor who is deafand would love to connect with a youth who is also deaf orhard of hearing.Access Living’s Youth and Educat ion programsempower youth with disabilit ies to take pride in themselvesand to find meaningful choices for living, learning, andworking in their communit ies. We encourage youth withdisabilit ies to be considered and consider themselves fulland equal members of society. We develop self-advocacyskills to fight discriminat ion. “Parent-Implemented Communication Strategies†(PiCS)research project

Families with young children (between the ages of 2 and 3years) who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and have 10 or fewerwords in their funct ional vocabulary are invited to part icipatein a research project , “Parent-ImplementedCommunicat ion Strategies†(PiCS).

This research project focuses on improving thecommunicat ion skills of young children who are deaf or hardof hearing. The project involves teaching and coachingparents in their homes to use strategies that may promoteand enhance the communicat ion skills of their youngchildren. We feel this project is important since it will lead tothe development of intervent ion strategies for your childand will provide informat ion that we will use to developcommunicat ion intervent ions that many parents can use intheir homes with their young children who are deaf or hardof hearing.

In Our Library: ASL Literacy Packets now on Vimeo

As many people are already aware, thanks to the phenomenal work of IllinoisState University graduate student Afton Gillis, ISRC has ASL Literacy Packetsbased on seven popular picture books. Each packet includes descript ions anddemonstrat ions of the signs in the story, and three literacy act ivit ies - including allneccessary handouts or manipulat ives. You can view each packet as an e-bookor download it as a PDF. To accompany these packets, we have a copy of each of the seven books as wellas a DVD of Ms. Gillis signing all of the stories. A video of each story can beviewed by clicking on the link next to that t it le below or you can access all sevenvideos at the ASL Literacy Packets Vimeo album.
