Capital Projects Update

The project has proceeded at an acceler-ated pace nearly meeting all September completion milestones:

• Onsite water main and sanitary sewer extension

• Storm sewer

• Retention ponds

• Installation of paving around the building and in the parking lot area

UIC (underground injection wells) are commencing this week. These wells will be connected next spring. The retaining walls are completed and backfilled. Building slabs will be complete this month and structural steel erection has begun in the north classroom wing. Hy-droseeding of the slopes around the site and in the ponds is scheduled for com-pletion by the end of September as well; additional asphalt paving will be in-stalled to protect the site from mud and keep the work on schedule.

There were no recent sightings of the Gin-gerbread Man at Elementary #15. Staff will continue to keep a watchful eye for his next appearance.

Moisture barrier being installed prior to Library concrete slab.

Site has been prepared for the rainy season with straw mats, rock check dams and temporary inlets into catch basins that lead to rain gardens and the detention pond.

Drilling contractor mobilized drill rig onto site to start drilling of 24” diameter UIC wells (underground infiltration wells).

Installation of rock in detention pond prior to rain. Soil and grass seed will be installed above rock level to top of berm.

In late August, the contractor “gave back” portions of the site they used during the summer. The sepa-ration wall and fencing between the active school campus and the construction zone remains in place. The configuration is essentially the same as last year and provides a distinct barrier between school and construction activities. The contractor and subcontractors have been focused on the schedule, advance planning, coordination and as a result work has been very productive. The photos

show how the building has taken shape over the short summer. The walk-path from the school campus to the fields is just north of the construction fencing, across the parking lot to 2nd Ave., south along the 2nd Ave. sidewalk to the fenced walk-path (just north of the baseball field) eastward to the football field. To avoid the safety concerns of large crowds access-ing the football field, home football games are scheduled for off-site locations.

Over the summer a significant amount of work took place within the existing building. Construction of seismic bracing walls required demolition and re-construction of classroom/corridor bracing walls. The work was completed “just in time” for the start of school. Subcontractor comments, shortly before the start of school alleged unsafe work or condi-tions. The subcontractor had brought on board additional crew to complete the work on these is-sues which were identified earlier in August. Sur-prisingly, the comments were from the crew who completed or were to have completed the work. A lot of work can be completed in a short time when the focus is to complete the work. Before school started both the fire marshal and the state L&I elec-

trical inspector were on site for final inspections. The building was noted as safe and ready for occu-pancy on the first day of school. Summer work included substantial completion of the student parking lots, framing the new gym, exercise room, training room and demolition re-quired to expand the locker rooms. Work is mov-ing forward to occupancy of the new admin, coun-seling areas and new classrooms over winter break. With the start of school, the contractor has moved their work back behind the separation walls except for after hours and weekend work within the occupied areas of the school

Design work has continued through the summer to develop site and building plans for design committee review following the start of school. Construction is planned to start at the end of school with preparation, contractor move-in, shop drawing and submittals getting started during the last 3-4 weeks of school. Construction of the sewer extension would begin at the same time under separate contract and would have a shorter construction schedule. Substantial completion is planned for September 2011.

Liberty High School Initial planning and design meetings will start this fall. This will be a multi-phased project similar to Skyline High School. Initial sitework and selective demolition is planned for the summer of 2010 with substantial building demolition and construction planned to start in the fall of 2010. Partial completion is planned for September 2011 with final completion in the spring of 2012.

Briarwood Elementary The reconstruction is planned to start in early spring 2011 with the opening planned for September 2012.
