TECHNICAL NOTES

The Goat Situation Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age group; volume of production; supply and disposition; and monthly average prices at farmgate level.

This report is released every September covering first half of the year (January-June) as the reference period.

The data for this report were collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through two (2) major surveys, namely:

1. The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS). It consists of 15,069 sample households in 1,051 sample barangays nationwide; and

2. The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers 474 independent farms as of July 2017. A goat farm is considered commercial when it has a farm capacity of at least 21 head of adult goat.

Both surveys are conducted semi-annually every January and July in all provinces.

Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the livestock and poultry subsector in the Survey of Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (SSHPDP)1. This covers around 1,387 Accredited (AAA and AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

Concepts and Definitions

Backyard Farm – any farm or household whether farming or non-farming raisingat least one head of animal and does not qualify as a commercial farm.

Commercial Farm – any goat farm which satisfy the following conditions:• Tending at least 21 heads of adult and zero head of young• Tending at least 41 head of young animals• Tending at least 10 heads of adult and 22 heads of young

Death/Losses – the number of animals that died due to pests, diseases and calamities.

Farmgate Price – the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.

1 Formerly known as Survey of Abattoirs and Dressing Plants (SADP)

NOTES -- Concluded

Imports – the number of live animals originating from a foreign country i.e. live breeders and feeders recorded by the Bureau of Animal Industry - National Veterinary Quarantine Services (BAI-NVQS). Inventory – the actual number domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.

• EndingInventoryisthenumberofliveanimalsattheendofthereferenceperiodi.eforJanuarytoJuneisasofJuly1.

Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRME) – slaughterhouses, meat processing plants, meat cutting plants and cold storages that are allowed to operate by the city/municipal government but are not accredited by the NMIS.

Slaughterhouse (SH) – premises that are approved and registered by the NMIS and LGUs in which food animals are slaughtered for human consumption.

Slaughtered in Slaughterhouses – the number of animals slaughtered in accredited (AAA, AA) sluaghterhouses including number of animals slaughtered in LRMEs.

Supply and Disposition – a framework that explains the population dynamics of animals in the farm including born live, imports, deaths and losses, number of animals slaughtered in the farm/household and sold live for slaughter which serves as supporting information or indicators to the volume of production estimates.

Value at Constant Prices – valuation of transactions, wherein the influence of price changes from the base year to the current year has been removed.

Value at Current Prices – the value based on prices during the reference year; nominal year.

Value of Production refers to the value of the animal with reference to its farmgate price. It is derived by multiplying the volume of production by its farmgate price.

Volume of Production – the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which in-clude animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight.
