“this new KPI
also reminds us
all faculty
members to be on
our toes at all
times as the
nation will be
watching us!”
Prof. Dr. Rizalman MamatDean, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
It may not be a coincidence that as I sat penning down thismessage on the eve of 60th Anniversary of our NationalDay, my mind wondered around questioning what exactlyhad the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UMP (FKM)contributed, big or small, towards nation building. Specialthanks to faculty members for being good since 5 years ofme as a Dean of FKM.
I instantly recalled the launching event of the East CoastRail Link (ECRL) by the Prime Minister on 9 August 2017 inBandar Baru Kuantan, when Universiti Malaysia Pahang wasspecially announced to focus on railway engineering andtechnology, in addition to its existing niche in mechanicaland automotive engineering, in order that the universitywould provide support, from construction to maintenance,in the upcoming construction of the ECRL. This decisionwas made by the Prime Minister because of UMP’sstrategic location of Gambang being close to the ECRL andits position being more or less at the centre of the ECRLroute from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu. UMP, particularlythe Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, is active now on thedrawing board with the ECRL Industrial Skills TrainingProgramme which is expected to begin in September thisyear with a first intake of 300 students.
One reason why the Prime Minster indicated UMP toprovide technical support to the construction of ECRL isUMP's improved world ranking being currently among thebest 300 universities globally in Mechanical EngineeringProgramme. I am indeed thankful to the faculty membersfor their contribution towards this effort. The InternationalJournal of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering (IJAME)published by Automotive Engineering Centre (AEC), FKMhad achieved its ranking as the top journal in Asia and top10 percent at world level. Another journal published byFKM is Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Sciences(JMES), indexed in Scopus in 2015 and currently ranked top10 percent at world level in Energy Engineering and 12percent in Fuel Technology.
The faculty feels proud of our academic achievements thusfar and the new tasks entrusted by the nation upon us. Butthis new KPI also reminds us all faculty members to be onour toes at all times as the nation will be watching us!

The mission of SMD covers the needs to developand improve structural materials, including metalsand polymer/composite for sustainable and highperformance materials.
Led by the CEO, Dr. Juliawati Alias and Dr. AhmadSyahrizan Sulaiman as the mentor, the group with11 active members are engaged in several researchprojects and commited to fostering skills andexpertise in the undergraduate and postgraduatestudents research. The focus group is also involvedin industrial and consultation projects. As for now,SMD is dedicatedly engaged with 14 activepostgraduate supervision, with over 18 internaland external grants for the current year thatcontributes to over RM1 million since the past 5years.
As continuation of their expanding research andfuture collaboration with the industries, the groupis involved in several visits, activities and trainingsession. Sharing skills and knowledge in corrosion,a brief lecture and short demo on electrochemicalmeasurement and corrosion was conducted on 3May 2017, followed by another short lecture onceramic degradation by a visiting lecturer fromAKPrind Institute, Jogjakarta Indonesia on 16 May2017. A training on mechanical testing forpolymer/composite materials was also conductedto enhance the students’ knowledge and skills aswell as aimed for the benefit of future graduateemployability. A technical visit to Norimax Malaysiain Puchong for future collaboration in corrosionprotection was held on 9 May 2017.

Dr. Mohd Jamil Bin Mohamed Mokhtaruddin
It has been my dream todo a PhD since I was in mystudies of BiomedicalEngineering degree inUniversity of Malaya. Itwas the interest tocomprehend the humanbrain that made medecide to pursue my PhDat the University ofOxford, United Kingdom. My research focuses in theunderstanding of braintissue swelling followingan ischaemic-reperfusiontreatment usingmathematical modelling.
I did my research with thePhysiologicalUnderstanding throughModelling (PUMMA)research group headed byAssoc. Prof. StephenPayne. There are several
research areas in thisgroup, which include brainstroke, neurodegenerativedisease, cerebralautoregulation, cancer, and respiration. The groupconsists of about 10 to 15PhD students andPostdoctorates. Assoc.Prof. Stephen encouragedeveryone to use availableopen-source numericalsimulations software(except Matlab) as theyare free, are extensivelyused worldwide, and alsoto cultivate theirdevelopment for the useof other researchcommunity. In addition, the group works closelywith clinical collaboratorsto explore the potentialapplications of theresearch to improve thehealthcare.
The environment inOxford had allowed me toalso gain extracurricularexperience through myinvolvement with the localcommunity in the OxfordGamelan Society led byMr. Peter Smith. Weperformed in many gigsincluding for charity,wayang-kulit show, and forformal occasion. This hastaught me to develop awork-life balance which isimportant to improvework efficiency andpersonal health.

Research background -For my PhD, my study wasmainly focusing on theevaluation andcharacterization offabricating method fororthopedic polymerimplant using additivemanufacturing method. The Three-D printing waschosen as the mainfabrication method toproduce porous scaffoldand spinal cage implant.Characterization of porousscaffold was done tounderstand the effect ofporous packing method, porosity percentage andporous size of theunidirectional andcomplex porous scaffold.
Campus life - Life in Japanas a foreigner was noteasy at the beginning. The
Japanese preparatorycourses that I took 3 yearsin UNISEL had saved me alot of hassles. My PhDjourney in KyushuUniversity started in theChikushi Campus, acampus mainly forresearchers andpostgraduate students. There are also othercampuses wherepostgraduate courses areoffer such as Hakozaki, Itoand Ohashi campus. InChikushi Campus, theInterdisciplinary GraduateSchool of EngineeringSciences (IGSES) is the oneresponsible for managingpostgraduate students likeme. There are 5Department in IGSES, andone of it is theDepartment of Molecularand Material Sciences
(MMS) in which Ibelonged to.
Others experience - Thereare many things that wecould derive from theirtechnology and society. These knowledge and valuescould be adapted based onour local environment forthe benefit of Malaysia. Theopportunities to study inJapan, specifically KyushuUniversity are wide enoughfor foreigners. For example, there are the Green Asiaprogramme andMonbukagakushoScholarship that providefinancial aid for excellentforeign students who wantto advance their study inJapan. UMP itself isbecoming a distinguishedtechnology university and isoffering a wide range ofengineering courses suitablefor the latest industrydemand.

Thou art my family now and then,
Camaraderie flows in our vein,
Moments together of sound and bad,
O'er the times of jovial and sad
The acquaintance here shalt last long,
Thanks to thou we linger strong,
Hath vast impact unto our life,
Dwelling in Pekan - we shalt survive
For life is a journey - hast to make do,
Methinks we would make it through,
Never forsake, the perspire and pray,
FKM family is here to stay
